Android Thread - Give It Up, Headphones Jacks are Dead.

oh since its 7 you have the samsung experience skin
still check the audio settings and see if you find anything
otherwise there isn't much that you can do
I tried using the Hearing Aid function, but all it did was boost the volume more. Oh well .
So my OnePlus 7 Pro arrived and so far I love it. It is very big but it's not unwieldy, and it's hard to mind when the display is this good. When put on the right setting (i have it on wide gamut and warm) it's fucking gorgeous. The 90Hz refresh really does make a world of difference to making the whole experience feel snappier and making scrolling through apps like twitter more enjoyable. I can 100% see this becoming standard on flagships in the next year.
I've only had a day with it so I haven't managed to venture out to take any photos, but from just messing around the main sensor seems very capable. The telephoto and wide sensors are definitely softer, with the wide being the worst one by far, but used in good light they do the job fine. At some point I'll take my old Xiaomi Mi 5 with the google camera mod out with me and take some comparison shots, because that thing actually punches way above its weight.
Definitely not. You have 144hz monitors that were available for a while in the PC market and companies still manufacture 60Hz screens. A higher refresh rate means higher cost, and most people are happy with their 60Hz screens.
To be honest, unless you're gaming, having a 60+Hz refresh rate screen is just an aesthetic feature. There's little benefit from using them, at the moment.
Higher refresh rates drain battery, I think variable refresh rate has to become a thing on phones first.
Isn't it already a thing? I know the Razer Phone 1/2 support VRR.
It is variable. While scrolling through apps like twitter or through the UI, it's 90Hz. While using an app that runs at 30 or 60fps, like games, or while watching a video the display automatically switches to 60Hz.
It will use a little more juice than if it were 60Hz all the time but I'll gladly give it up for how nice it feels.
Variable refresh rate needs to become a part of AOSP, which likely won't happen until R at the earliest since we haven't heard anything about its inclusion in Q.
I know I complained about it before, but can someone please explain me this
https://www.androidpolice.com/2019/05/29/oneplus-7-review/
why and how the fuck a $700 smartphone is "best value"? It's a fucking flagship with little to no difference from top/premium brands. Redmi just announces the K20 Pro with great specs for half that price, how is that not considered "best value"?
China only for now, will be unlikely to see a US release, and even if it does, carrier support will be limited. I know you think a 90hz display doesn't matter but it really does (plus higher resolution). We have also yet to see the camera performance.
Just quickly looking it up, the bands on the only version of that phone right now don't support most of the bands you would need in the west at all. Kinda hard to argue that is 'best value'.
That's not true because Xiaomi global phones work everywhere other than the US.
And yeah I used it as a comparison, even the Nokia has a better value than 1+
There isn't a global version of the phone even announced, or even priced. I have a Mi Mix 3 and I do understand how their product lineup of global vs china versions work. So no, this phone is not 'Best Value' to anyone in the west as the majority of the bands here are not picked up by the phone. You can try to argue that when something global exists but right now you are comparing a phone that works here vs a phone that doesn't.
Recently I'm getting some bizarre notifications occasionally from Facebook.
"X commented on your post", X always being some name in unfamiliar with.
I click the notification, and Facebook opens up to what's essentially a 404.
I go and check my notifications on the actual Facebook, and I can't find any trace of anyone commenting on any of my posts (I post extremely rarely. My last post is over a year old)
I was thinking this might be some malicious app giving false notifications, but I've checked with a notification list application, and it appears to really come from Facebook.
Here's the log for one of the notifications:

I don't use Facebook but maybe you could try the Lite app to check if this issue happens there as well.
to me, it looks like FB is experimenting something and just sending you random notifications to see if you interact with them
I'd hazard a guess a spambot posting lots of comments on people, then being detected and wiped before you noticed.
In literally a few seconds?
Because i immediately tap the notification
Hey guys, I'm looking to upgrade from my LG V20, and I'm looking to not spend more than $600 USD.
I've been looking at the OnePlus 6t or the Razer Phone 2, but I'm open to any other suggestions
I'm not really super picky in terms of features, I mainly just listen to music through Poweramp and watch the occasional video, but the phone DOES need to support Verizon.
Neither of those phones have headphone jacks FYI, they both need dongles if you don't use bluetooth audio.
Ideally, yeah I'd like a headphone jack, but using a dongle doesn't seem like too much of a hassle to me
USB-C headphones exist too, and they aren't bad.

These things come with the Pixel 3s and they are pretty cool.
Yep, I use these every day. Their design is excellent, the cable doubling as an ear wing works super well. Their sound is actually pretty good. Mids and highs are strong and clear without being tinny or piercing. Lows and bass is interesting, it's surprisingly clear but somewhat quiet.
If you're a basshead you won't like them because lows are a little soft, but for $30 and the convenience factor of USB-C, I'm absolutely going to buy another pair of these if/when the ones that came in the box break. Which is actually pretty remarkable. I've never found a pair of included-in-the-box earbuds that I'd actually rebuy.
Just got my pixel 3a. I'm shit at photos, but I can tell it's an improvement over my old OPO phone. Pretty happy so far with my purchase.
If anyone else is thinking about getting a 3a and wants $50 in the google store, you can use this link or code
https://store.google.com/product/pixel_3a?promoCode=B-HX1GWE7J06W1WXASNAART4C
Use it to get a case or a screen protector with your new phone. Let us know if you use the code so I can edit the post saying its been redeemed. Full disclosure, if you use that link I also get a crisp $50.
Here's the fine print, codes good until end of august, the balance will disappear by october if you don't use it.

Turns out this was correct. Thanks.
It isn't. If you use headphones just keep the dongle in the case. If you use earphones buy one of those little square zip up carrying cases for like $5 and keep your earphones and the dongle in there.
-can't remove on mobile-
Ye, I just keep my dongle connected to my $10 headphones, it is like it isn't even there.
That's the thing I never understood about people complaining about headphone dongles. If you only use one pair of head/earphones, just keep it connected all the time. No big deal.
I understand the reasoning, and it does suck for people who use more than one pair on a regular basis, but for the vast majority of people it's barely a concern. I'm willing to sacrifice a tiny convenience for one less hole for water to get through.
I think the bigger problem for a lot of people is situations where you need to charge the phone but you wanna listen to music at the same time (navigation on a car trip for ex, if you don't have bluetooth audio, long bus rides, etc)
There are usb-c splitters but they're very YMMV from what I've seen
Personally I just use bluetooth audio always so it's not a huge issue for me but I can definitely see why people have issues with it.
Right that's true. That's something I don't do often so I didn't consider it.
I'm pretty much exclusive to Bluetooth audio now (even before the rip headphone jack meme) so it didn't hurt me. If anything, and I'm assuming this was Apple's reasoning, but just never mentioned it, is that it totally pushed Bluetooth tech research into full gear. People were ok with having cords on their headphones until the most popular brand in the world suddenly dropped the port and then everybody joined in. It was either the dongle life or make Bluetooth audio less shit
This same thing goes for Apple dropping all the ports on their laptops. It's to make people rush to make more type C devices, which I'm all for.
