PC Building V4 - "ok SSDs got cheap, now do RAM next"

Looking at the raw specs of the Nvidia RTX lineup, I think it's safe to say we won't be seeing them - even Max-Q versions - in laptops anytime soon, for one very big reason...

That... That is a lot of power draw. Like, A LOT of power draw, even for desktop cards. Looking at prior trends, a Max-Q 2080 might still draw as much as a desktop 1070. Yikes.
Combine that with the current legal flight limit for laptop batteries (<100wh) and you're basically left with a luggable desktop with an emergency backup battery, instead of a fully portable device.
to be fair, not many people game using the dGPU while on battery power, so for a lot of use cases that wouldn't really matter.
Even when you're not gaming, if the laptop has a G-Sync panel (which Nvidia is pushing HARD in laptops right now, financial incentives and everything), Optimus will not activate, leading to that thirsty GPU running on idle all the time and sucking down battery like crazy.
Sure some of those laptops let you turn G-Sync off to let Optimus kick in, but that requires a full system reboot, and sometimes it doesn't actually correctly apply if you have anything like new hardware detection or Windows updates pending after reboot.
Laughs in Vega.
I never thought I'd have a triple slot cooler again but here my Vega 64 is
Laughs in CLC.
Vega gives precisely zero fucks
Hm...
https://www.emmi.rs/napajanja-i-dodatni-ventilatori.10.html?categoryId=219 if you can make it past the language barrier, it might work
It's actually an improvement. I'm coming from a heavily overclocked, custom bios, wc'd R9 290x Lightning that was a review sample. That thing has been known to take over 500w on LN2, has 2x8 + 1x6 pin for power.
TIL I actually need to set the XMP profile for my RAM to actually run at 3000mhz
why I do the computer and it not do the thingy???
I swear it wasn't this complicated last time
I thoroughly enjoy finding that pretty much three quarters of the list of quality PSUs aren't even available in this country.
At least a lot of euro countries get straight superflower units, that's kinda neat.
Shame Australia isn't a part of Europe.
Buying a 1080 instead of a 2070 is looking more attractive to me by the minute.
Ah yeah, forgot. Yeah you don't get shit over there, not even full lines of basic stuff like APUs.
Hell I'd even settle for a 1070 - which I reckon should do 1080p144 just fine? I can barely get there with a 1060 if I drop detail
I'm a 1080p144 type of gal as well, I'm considering the 1080 for a bit of extra headroom. And the bottom is falling out of the prices.

Hell, I wish
damn europoors
Seems good, but I'll seek a slightly stronger one. Seasonic it is then
Update on the 3570k, managed to squeeze stable 4.4ghz out of it on this Z68AP-D3
Just waiting on a load of things to sell on ebay so I can get a much better mobo + dual 120mm rad
What disappointed me the most about the whole RTX demo Nvidia was showing off, was that as cool as it looked, it was still very clearly unpolished, and it apparently runs like shit even on the 2080TI.
From what I heard, on the single-GPU demo systems that weren't just running prerecorded video, the RTX-enhanced games with raytracing on couldn't break 60FPS at 1080p. Shadow of the Tomb Raider had an average of 50. On a 2080TI. At 1080p. Talk about not ready for prime time.
I don't know where else to put this question, seeing as "quick questions" doesn't return a search result on Facepunch anymore.
The fan in my PSU is making a horrific noise now. I'm worried that the damn thing is just gonna up and fail on me and there's no way I'm opening that thing up. It's out of warranty, should I just replace the sucker?

This is the model.
If it's that old and you're tight on money, just pop the fan out and put a new one in, or put a drop or two of oil in it. (you usually have to peel a sticker off at least part-way to do that)
Otherwise, yeah, replace the PSU.
Not too tight on money that I can't afford a new PSU.

Looking at this, doesn't seem too unreasonable.
I got my Seasonic Focus+ 850W for $80 last year. While EVGA PSU's are also really good, the Seasonic's tend to be just a hair better. Some people really despise the caps which are in the cables, they don't bother me though.
Check JonnyGuru's review of the power supplies you're looking at and make a decision based off of that, which you want most for atheistic or features and whatever is on the best sale.
I've been posting this gradually in CIPWTTKT, but I think it has a better home here as a completed project.
I recently built a computer with a glass case and shortly after gained a small obsession with Nixie tubes. You know where this is going.
First I 3D printed a little adapter plate to go from the watercooler reservoir tray my case came with that I wasn't using to a Nixie thermometer board.

Then I custom soldered a SATA -> 5.5 12V DC plug to power the Nixie thermometer, and here's the finished result:

Worked out great. It even turns off when the PC is in sleep mode.
I love amber lighting so much, I wish it would take off more with computers. I pretty much only want RGB so I can have an amber color. Car manufacturers used amber or a dark red/orange for years since it is softer on your eyes and less distracting for night driving or in the case of aircraft, flying.
Gamers are notorious for being in dark lit rooms, I don't know why I need uncontrollable blue LED's on my motherboard that are capable of shining on a wall 15ft away if I overclock my CPU while any other LED is less than a quarter as bright.
I use blue as the HOT color on my CPU cooler for that reason. Now I only get eye cancer when my computer needs attention.
