I've had one out of, 7 fans on my graphics cards over the years die, so that's a pretty good record. Though, none of those GPUs have died either. The fan was from an Asus R9 290 DirectCU II - which has two fans, I could've probably fixed the fan by popping it out and oiling it though, since it wasn't' a total seizure.
What's some reliable external storage in the 150-200gb range I could use for backups?
Personally I think a completely 0 fan speed isn't ideal. What I do is run the fans at barely spinning speeds as if they were zero. So like I'll run my ICX fans at 10-15% speed and then begin the curve from there. This way the fans don't switch on and off constantly if sitting at the border. But it also helps delay the need to ever spin up. Makes for a smoother operation, IMO. But this also requires that your fans/controller can go that low.
Eh, with resistors any fan can go that low!
Wear on your fan is almost definitely gonna make your card useless before heat kills it. 60 degrees really isn't too hot for a GPU.
I mean technically, both AMD and Nvidia quote 90c as a "safe operating temperature as specced" IE, as long as you're not fiddling with clocks or voltage, it SHOULD be okay running warm for a while if it has no choice
Anyone know of any prebuilts that don't look fucking stupid, it just have to have Nvidia graphics GTX 1050 or higher to generate some graphics for professional use
Honestly the Inspiron 5680 series isn't that bad as far as prebuilts go. Entry model is an i3 8100 and GTX 1050 for 600-ish on sale, and the chassis they're using is surprisingly upgrade-friendly in my experience. Inspiron 5680 VR Ready Gaming Desktop | Dell United States
NZXT BLD Everything you put in is basically MSRP plus a $99 service and warranty cost. Plus they don't look like shit
Yeah I think I'm going to go with the DELL XPS lineup I usually just build them out by hand but the client jumped in at the last second and I don't have weeks to wait for parts
I've recently had a GPU die, it was never hotter than 80,. Non-overclocked
Pascal throttles around 80C.
It was a 980 ti
That just means the GPU itself won't get damaged by the temperatures, the thermal expansion can still cause cracks in the solder joints. There's a reason why one of the most common DIY graphics card repair methods is "bake it in an oven".
Throttles closer to 90 then but you still want to avoid temperatures that high.
Nobody should be surprised. 7nm will bring the true performance improvement, Nvidia is just milking the cashcow right now. Early adopter tax and all.

I goofed, I thought I would have enough room for this new 240mm cooler but I was very wrong. Had to buy a new case and so my build has been delayed to monday.
I'm like, the only one among my coworkers to not be shocked by this A lot of them actually fell for the "several times faster*" marketing trick
does everything look in order here? i'm thinking about replacing my current 960 2GB with a 1070 8GB i found earlier i'm just worried if i'd be getting enough cooling (my current case only has one fan running, i'd have to get some kind of splitter for the front fan since the mobo only supports 1 non-cpu fan, though i've heard they can damage your motherboard? if anyone has suggestions for one that, well, won't do that, i'd appreciate it) my build: https://pcpartpicker.com/user/cleansuit/saved/K3Wr6h my current 960: EVGA GeForce GTX 960 02G-P4-2966-KR 2GB SSC GAMING w/ACX 2.0+ what i'm planning on buying: NVIDIA - GeForce GTX 1070 Founders Edition 8GB fan splitter 1: SATA Power Distribution PCB 6 fan splitter 2: SilverStone PWM Fan Hub System Cables, Black (CPF04) if anyone has any suggestions for other/cheaper 1070 8GB options, feel free to tell. if i'm being honest, i'm not too well-versed in the world of PC building, so bear with me
Founder's Edition 1070 provides adequate cooling but it's loud as all fuck. Keep that in mind.
How's this looking? I think my current PC is finally about to die. Komplett Gamer Premium You can scroll down to specifications to check the parts. They also allow you to switch parts out Komplett Gamer Premium i150

how about this model, instead? it's a bit more expensive but it seems to have higher clock speeds, and i'm seeing reviews that claim it's quiet: EVGA GeForce GTX 1070 SC GAMING ACX 3.0, 08G
I've got a 1080 with an iCX cooler which is nearly identical. It's very quiet. I'd recommend it.
If you can count it, the scores I'm seeing with a standard clocked EVGA GTX 1080 Gaming SC with the same memory clocks as the "optional bios update" would make the overclocked/decently binned RTX 2080 about 13-14% faster than a decently binned GTX 1080. So that means a highly binned, overclocked 1080Ti will likely match or outperform a lower end RTX 2080 with another 3gb of vram for $150-200 less. That also means that paying more than twice the price of a 1080 will get you only like 10-15% more performance in current games? Oh man. Yep, I'm pretty sure I straight fucking scored on the $299.99 EVGA crackhead deal. Hold on, actually. Wait. No, numbers are wrong here. Hold the fuck on. 27,085 in Fire Strike???? https://benchmarks.ul.com/hardware/gpu/NVIDIA+GeForce+GTX+1080+Ti/review 1080 Ti's average 28124, my GTX 1080 can get like 23,700. This better either be a 2070, fake, broken non-cert drivers or Nvidia is absolutely screwed when the real benchmarks for current gen games drop.
All this speculation and conflicting info is why I’m kinda holding off forming any opinion of the RTX line until they have official benchmarks.
My only real commendation is switching that DDR4 2400mhz for some 2933 or at least 2666. going from 2400 to 2933 is a non-trivial performance boost.
Since I'm about to upgrade, I want to do a before and after benchmark. What software do you recommend?
