ok thanks guys for the info
We're not done here. at least 3 more people need to reply with 80 plus information. This is gonna be an 80 plus bukakke.
We need at least 80 or more responses
Okay, so this might be a stupid question but I'm considering getting a M.2 drive as a birthday present to myself but I'm currently using the MSI Z87-G55 motherboard which says it supports M.2. I've been trying to google around to find if my motherboard would actually support the Samsung 970 EVO (or similar) but no go. My intention is not to use it as a boot drive but rather for video editing. Any help here would be appreciated.
That board has an MSATA slot, not M.2 unfortunately.
So I'm looking to put this together. This case is perfect for the meager space I have on a shelf next to my desk so can't go any bigger. This is already at the upper bound for my budget, Im a structural engineer/architect so do a lot of work in CAD, rendering and simulations. Advise warnly apreciated or suggestions to modifying. Case is a Kolinko Rocket. Https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/list/Vs3L4q https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/203662/535e1351-d54e-4c48-9e82-1c36826540de/42c80aa3-21b2-45f3-8538-c8413b6e4f30.jpg
I'm gonna say you're gonna have a hard time finding an 80 plus gold PSU that outputs actually out-of-spec voltages. While there are of course exceptions, generally speaking, an 80 plus platinum PSU will be of better quality than an 80 plus bronze. Honestly I find the discussion sort of pointless - either you're the kind of person that researches PSUs and buys the best product at your price point, or you don't research your stuff, in which case aiming for a better qualification is a good idea (assuming you don't know the brands). The fact that good quality PSUs don't necessarily have the best ratings is really only useful knowledge to someone who already knows what to look for.
I'm looking to upgrade my current setup with the following parts and wanted to get your opinion. This is mostly for ArmA 3 and VR.
They both seem to be the same price for me.
Ok, there seems to be 2 pages for the same CPU, I had this one https://fr.pcpartpicker.com/product/cjPzK8/intel-core-i7-8700k-37ghz-6-core-processor-cm8068403358220
You could go with a cheaper corsair SFX PSU, and upgrade to 2 sticks of Team Dark Rock Pro 3200 ram.
I don't know about all the UEFI mumbo jumbo with newer boards but they make pci-e 4x cards that you can just slot a m.2 into. UEFI will probably keep you from booting from it or something silly but it should still work as a storage drive. I'm positive someone somewhere has put like a 960 Pro into something that doesn't support it out of the box. If I remember right, most of the Samsung nvme's even support booting from a legacy bios so it's likely it could even work out of the box with just a $10-15 card. Then down the road if you get a newer motherboard/setup you can use it as a boot drive or extra storage without having to overpay for slower sata drives that probably won't be as useful in the long term.
While having some catastrophic computer issues (now resolved) I noticed I have a 450w power supply, not 500w like I previously though. I have a GTX 980 Ti, Xeon E3-1230v3, 16GB of RAM, 2x 1tb WD 7200rpm HDD, and 2x SSD, as well as every single USB port in use (though nothing should be using undue amounts of power, as the only hungry devices have external power supplies), should I be worried? I've had it in this configuration for about 6 months now and not noticed and inexplicable shutdowns.
450 watts is way too low to be running a 980ti with anything else meaningful. You're definitely right at the spot where it's super sketchy and I'm not sure I'd trust that Rosewill to put out every possible watt it can. https://seasonic.com/wattage-calculator You really want to be in the efficiency curve rather than above or below it. I'm really happy with my Seasonic Focus+, when they go on sale you really can't beat them.
Hmm, according to the calculator I'm at 550w draw (I went heavy on the USB 3 devices just to be safe, even though really my only USB 3 device is my monitor's USB 3 hub). Perhaps I should upgrade my PSU then... My boyfriend's PC is the same but with a GTX 770 and only 1 HDD, and only a handful of USB 2 devices. Should I upgrade his too?
the GTX 770 is pretty power hungry iirc
So right now I have a pretty basic HDMI-in "capture card" that doesn't even support audio and doesn't work outright with some devices, but I will probably want to record and/or stream Switch stuff later in the year. Does anyone have any recommendations for an improved solution? It doesn't have to capture in 4k or even have the highest bitrate, I just want something that'll capture both audio and video at decent 1080p quality, and preferably 60fps. PCIe card would be preferable to an external box, since I'm midway through another system upgrade anyway.
@Crest is the person you want to talk to for streaming stuff. He can hook you up with some good info.
HD60 Pro or 4K60 Pro I work for Elgato Gaming/Corsair, so you know.
I'm currently just using it to picture-in-picture my laptop onto my desktop's monitors, so I can effectively use monitor #2 with either one without needing an HDMI switch. That's all well and good, but at 30fps with no audio, and being incompatible with a lot of other stuff I've tried (presumably due to HDCP), it is absolutely unfit for console streaming.
Built my first PC yesterday. Nothing too special, not a huge gamer. Was honestly a lot easier than I anticipated. https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/553/3ddd3db9-a7d5-487f-abbb-7530498880a9/image.png Corsair Carbide 200R fits perfectly between my desk and wall-attached shelf. https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/553/6b4ed1fa-78ce-4255-a66b-0a91581522e2/image.png
Whats the specs on that my dude
https://pcpartpicker.com/list/sNfdxG I bought all the parts about two weeks ago for ~850. Only got around to building it now as I realized I needed to buy a 50 ft ethernet cable due to no wifi card (I've only owned laptops up until now). I mostly play last gen games like Warframe, BF3, probably the most demanding is ARMA 3 and the 1050 Ti does a decent job at everything so far. I also do some video editing/production as a hobby so running Premiere and encoding was also a focus.
a 1600 feels kinda overkill for a 1050 Ti I feel also that 1050 Ti will play modern games no problems my dude wont be afraid to give em a try
I have to drop some games to low for them to run at playable framerates on a 1060 at 1440p, it's not going to be great on a 1050 ti unless you're used to consoles.
A 1050Ti is gonna run modern games on medium to high at 60FPS. It's a good card for the money as long as you're okay with optimizing your graphical settings.
I'm used to running ALL of my games on low since I've only ever had school/work laptops. I'm enjoying having a dedicated graphics card at all right now.
Looks really nice. Is it silent? Can I see the specs
Not sure how it's gonna do that when a 1060 can't and it's the faster card but ok.
Thanks! Chose the AB350M (actually Micro ATX) simply because it was the cheapest highly-rated AM4 board on PCPartPicker lol. Probably limits the expandability of my build a bit but I'm not too worried; I've got everything I need so far. 1060 would probably be fine. I didn't have to run any power cables to the 1050 Ti so I guess that helped free up a little room in the case.
