I wouldn't say there is a worry, it's just TB3 cables vary so much. Expect to put a price minimum on your searches on amazon.
My current ports only operate at the old 20G speed (MBP2017 no touch bar), but I'd still prefer to get a 40G capable cable so I can bring it forward if I trade up later. I plan to use it with an eGPU specifically (Core X), but the cable that comes with it is only like a foot long. I need three feet at least, four or six would be ideal, since I don't want another box cluttering my desk.
Yea pretty sure TB3 cables don't go that long unless you go optical from like Corning or something. I think they made long TB2 cables. Most full 40G cab les are only like 18inches.
Would I actually need the full 40 if I'm just running an eGPU off the port? I'm not daisy chaining or anything, it just needs to be fast enough for that by itself.
I think 40Gbps is the max based off of PCIe 3.0 4x + USB I think. So 40Gbps would be 4 lanes, 20 would be 2, afaik.
Alright, this is my final list. I'm not buying a GPU just yet, I'll be using my current R9 380 in the meantime. I'm pretty confident but let me know what you think.
I'm reusing an existing 500GB HDD for mass storage so I don't feel like I need additional storage space. And NVMe might make core apps a little snappier.
I'm planning to upgrade from a 3570k to a i7-8700K. This means I need to also replace my motherboard and ram. Have any of you had any experience with how well windows 10 handles upgrades like these? I really don't wan't to have to do a fresh install and have to reinstall everything.
First boot will take an extra minute. That's about it.
The really nice thing about Windows 10 is that you can install it onto a drive and then move that drive between different systems seamlessly. It's pretty impressive.
if its just for windows and other apps id look at a corsair force MP500 120GB they are fast and have good TBW
Though I think if you change too much at once (like, say, cloning your entire drive to a completely new system) it pesters you to re-authenticate Windows once you reach the desktop IIRC it checks to make sure your HDD/SSD config, Mobo and CPU are the same ones from last boot, and as long as one of the three is found, it trusts you
I already bought it :c But I feel fairly confident about my purchase, with a capacity that low I think it makes sense to go overkill a little for my actual use case. After all, the gap between "sensible 250GB drive" and "970 Evo" is only like $30.
Pretty sure they only care about motherboard. Maybe CPU.
Yeah I'm aware, actually. I bought Trident Z RGB on the pretenses that I like RGB and I'm okay with attempting a manual overclock. If I can't achieve 3200 by any means I plan on returning it.
Memory manufacturers generally have this stuff on lockdown, but good luck. You can always try their much more expensive 3200 RGB DIMMs: https://pcpartpicker.com/product/gT38TW/gskill-tridentz-rgb-16gb-2-x-8gb-ddr4-3200-memory-f4-3200c14d-16gtzr
Just gone a little crazy on Corsair stuff. Original plan was to transfer my current build into a Corsair SPEC-OMEGA case (in black) and use the fans that came with it to make it look cool. I don't really like my current case, I bought it a fair few years ago and the other available items were a bit boring (I used Scan.co.uk's 3XS service). It's fucking massive, has shit airflow and is really awkward to move around. Ideally I'd like to put it on my desk. https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/99/77fe3cb3-a451-4abc-b43f-3a901132b698/20180804_162039.jpg I've thought about it and bought an additional 3 LL120 fans to RGB it the fuck up. Whilst I was researching how to wire all the fans together, I found out that you can't mix HD and LL fans which is something that Corsair don't really advertise. So I ordered another 3 LL120 fans. I also stumbled upon a video that was talking about radiators and cooling. My CPU runs okay but I could probably squeeze a bit more out of my overclock. So I've bought a 360mm radiator (which has the RGB thing) for the front intake stack. And of course because I'm running so many fans and the radiator, I've had to dish out for the Corsair Commander thing to power and control it all. It was an absolutely a fucking pain to figure out how all the circuits fit together but I've got a working theory. I thought while I'm at it, why not get some LED strips to finish it off. Hopefully everything will arrive tomorrow and I can start putting it together. Already got three of my fans and the LED strips, making a start; https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/99/20dd27f4-af7d-4d6e-a6ac-a76b8f952613/20180805_150153.jpg
Those fans look like they can't draw any air in. Should have gone for the 570X tbh.
I think the 570X looks a bit too vanilla! I really like the front LED stripe on this one, fell in love with it as soon as I saw it. I'm not sure what cooling is going to be like, but there's a fair amount of clearance at the bottom and air can come in from the sides of the front panel too.
I want Corsair to make a 570x with a top 5.25" bay. I know it's like sacrilege. But I got this eight SSD hotswap bay I want to keep using, but I want to get a Corsair case.
I just realized that those 3200 DIMMs are actually the ones I purchased. So I should be fine.
Probably, sometimes the RGB causes signal problems though. I don't think the DOCP profile will set SoC voltage, so that usually needs to be 1.1V for stable Ryzen. Also, I just missed a sale where the Crosshair VI Hero was $170 - I feel like a sucker for not taking that deal.
Quick question What GPU should be a safe bet for a good 1440p 144hz gameplay with a  i5 6600K oc'd to 4.0 ghz. I've been looking at saving for a 1080ti but any tips?
You should be aiming for a 1080Ti as long as you're not interested in waiting for Turing.
I'd wait for the new line of Nvidia releases at this point. We're closing in on those. Some titles also will struggle with 144fps stable even with a 1080ti.
So, I just got out of a two-year relationship and have money for the first time in a while. I'm planning on drowning my sorrows in upgrading my PC for the first time in like, five-six years. Right now, these are my parts: CPU: i5 3570k Mobo: MSI Z77A-GD55 RAM: 2x4GB Corsair Vengeance Case: Corsair Carbide 300C (it's a bit cramped as things stand) PSU: Corsair TX650 I bought and build it all around 2012. I'm planning on spending *around* 200 a month, but for the next month or two I'm on less pay - which part would I benefit most from swapping out first? For the meantime I just want to be able to play Fallout 4 at 1080p on decent settings at 60FPS. Thank you for any advice provided.
so at some point newegg opened a warehouse in mississippi so now they gotta collect sales tax and it's probably not worth it for me to buy there anymore. what's the next best thing?
Get used to it, within 5 years online purchases of goods are going to all be taxed via federal law anyway.
Still just Amazon unless they've opened shit too, I can't remember for sure but I feel like I didn't pay tax to them when I lived there.
yeah amazon has sales tax in mississippi too even though there's no law requiring it. the one bill that was gonna require sales tax from interstate commerce in mississippi was struck down for being unconstitutional. presumably since amazon doesn't have to pay taxes in mississippi they're just pocketing that 7%
