Techmoan's pretty cool as well as RetroManCave, VWestlife, Phils Computer Lab, Modern Vintage Gamer, Nostalgia Nerd and Druaga1. Just depends on your taste really and what you like and don't like. Almost forgot, don't forget danooct1 for those ancient viruses that don't do anything nowadays
Well, that was a good run. I finally ran out of all the printer ink for my $50 brother printer. That I bought in 2014 for $10. Thank goodness for refillable cartridges.
moved recently and had to buy a new desk and chair and shit https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/58207/37324ab5-b64a-493f-b694-f824ff16a81b/desk.jpg like a fucking glove
tomorrow i'll finish cleaning up my room after moving in my house and post battlestation pix i had to measure this room down to the sub-inch before i told my landlord "hey can i take the room opening up when the roommate moves out", because my desk is about as fits like a glove as that is @hak
I know that I asked how dangerous it is to run EoL hypervisor so I got the person that actually pays for it to agree for fully shutting down the server due of EoL shit Now here comes a more crazy idea. How bad it would be to run release candidate software on production? OVH patched the Xen 6.5 image to get software raid working, but they did not do it with Xen 7.4, so I was given a plan today to move the VMs away, nuke the server and reinstall it with XCP-ng 7.5.0 Release candidate due of 7.4.1 xcp-ng not having software raid and 7.5.0 having software raid support. I was also given the reason why we going to use XCP-ng instead of proper XenServer due of the 7.4 Xen release being too shit and having too much stuff removed from the free version. So, install RC software on production or nah? Also we're getting rid of Zentyal. Turns out it's only maintained by a single guy now and the forums are no longer maintained, so we going full WinServer for master domain controller and using pfSense for networking because it looks like Zentyal is on the chopping block now. I'm feeling really stupid maintaining this thing.
Had a go with StoreMI earlier today, split up my 850 EVO to use as the fast tier and put my new 4TB drive as the slow tier. Just did a reboot because I was troubleshooting a weird Shadowplay + Vegas thing (ended up being Vegas' fault), but I needed to run my file through Handbrake, so I figured I'd store the file on my new juicy 4TB HDD. where's my drives amd Configuration tool just says StoreMI failed next to the tier. Gave up, deleted tier, recreated regular filesystems, uninstalling StoreMI. It didn't last a single day.
I got a "Closest I'm probably gonna get to IT" stock call today at work. She calls in asking for 16GB of flash storage for her camera. I check to see what we have and ask "What format"? She says: "Disk" So she wants 16GB of flash based memory in a disk format for her camera. My brain turns off. It wasn't until after the phone call ended that it occurred to me that she might have been reading the DISK part of sandisk off to me. Why do customers have to be so fucking tricky?
So lately I booted up my ol gaming desktop to play with, and it feels really sluggish for a (relatively) clean install of Windows 10. Simple actions like clicking on the Windows icon or searching for things are annoyingly delayed or slow. I remember at some point it used to be snappy and nice. Did some malware scans too, no sign of trouble. Could it possibly be my Hard Drive slowing down over the course of ~6-7 years? Is HDD degradation a thing? Or are my specs really just out of date in this day and age? (i.e. would upgrading to an SSD help?) specs: (gpus are 7950s) https://i.imgur.com/szQE1DD.png
There's a decent chance the drive's dying when it's that old.
There's a new Gmail, can anyone check if it uses the same Chrome only API as Youtube so it runs slower on Firefox and IE?
I see, i guess it will be a worthy investment then. Thanks
Slightly off-topic butpeaking as someone who uses Outlook all day everyday and sends about 150+ emails on a light work day, I'd just like to say that the carry over of being able to use CTRL+Enter on FP to post is definitely the best feature about NewPunch. As far as SSD's go, I am thuroughly impressed with my ADATA SU800. I picked it up for $149 on a deal from some Chinese amazon rip-off. It's back up to $190 but they regularly do flash sales on them. https://www.rakuten.com/shop/adata/product/ASU800SS-1TT-C/?scid=af_linkshare&PublisherName=Slickdeals+LLC&ranMID=36342&ranEAID=lw9MynSeamY&ranSiteID=lw9MynSeamY-ICnoyz1MJR4LkzSCGiQnwQ&siteID=lw9MynSeamY-ICnoyz1MJR4LkzSCGiQnwQ
Wait what, I've always been using Ctrl+Alt+S to send, then found out that worked in Jira too one day.
As with most things, it's either dead or dying.
I come to you with actual, bonafide, honest-to-god content. I work stockroom for a web shop that sells refurbished smartphones. In addition to that, I also handle returns. Got one in on Friday for an iPhone. Check the order and yeah, it's still in the return period. Check the form for return reason and it says 'missing battery'. Okay, probably the customer doesn't know how to phrase it properly, let's see what our records say. 'Customer called, phone won't turn on, thinks it might be missing the battery'. Plugged it into the charger and...well, 5 minutes later, my colleague and I were wondering how someone could legitimately be this stupid.
Thanks to this stupid heatwave in Europe, today I have experienced a system crash due of a hard drive overheating (hotswap wasn't enabled). 60+ degrees celsius on a drive jesus christ. I left my computer to render something in 3ds max and came back to a dead system. I had to crack open my computer case and point a large room fan onto the insides to keep that shit moderately cool, because apparently drilling several holes into your case and strapping on 5 additional fans for maximum airflow doesn't work.
Speaking of the heatwave, at least it's not raining 119F (48.3C) water on you.
This seriously confused me for way too long.
I don't think much of anything can happen when it's 119c outside, really.
oh god please help, I can’t decide between a surface book 2 or an XPS 15 one’s a 6-core 1050ti 4K ducking BEAST but the others a neat gimmicky designer™️ device with a 1060 please persuade me on one or the other seripusly though i have coupons for both at micro center please help
The SB2 is a lovely piece of hardware, had a friend who wanted recommendations, and I ended up with the same options for him - money was no object, though. But yeah, it’s lovely.
Sorry, I'd pulled an all nighter and was tired af. 8p-6a shifts are brutal.
The water pump in my car is seized up. Not happy about that since I'm stranded about 200 miles from home right now.
i've never heard of this happening so i'm handing down my old desktop to my girlfriend, and i needed to reinstall windows before handing it off (just not enough room) i made zero hardware changes to it, pulled an image of the SSD and went to reinstall. a few minutes into the first boot, it would lock up and then rebooting would fail. so i get a new SSD thinking i killed the 830 SSD (which came out in 2011 so a reasonable assumption). new ssd, same deal. try different RAM, fails to post, put the old ram back in, "overclocking failed". "oh" i turn off all the OC settings and get it back to stock, and it works. i'm just confused because i made no hardware changes after imaging the first time, yet somehow it was no longer a stable OC oh well
If you're anywhere near Arkansas, let me know. I've got two days off and some tools.
Thanks, but I'm in Burbank California visiting my parents. thankfully my dad will pay to fix it. it's just too hot out to do it myself.
I had a laptop today that was stuck at it's min cpu frequency. Windows power settings were good, and a reboot didn't fix it, but after I pulled the battery it started working again. Anyone seen something like this before?
Was possibly a setting in BIOS and you pulling the battery might have cleared the CMOS? That would be mostly possible only if the laptop was old and stuck somewhere in some kind of storage not being on the charger for a while.
I checked the bios, but the only options were boot order. The laptop was used daily, but then suddenly just "got slow."
