Having seen this unfold time and time again, please don't burn yourself out if he doesn't cooperate. I feel like a dick saying this, but dealing with depression/depression by proxy can really take a toll on your mental health if you let him drag you with him, and if he does, chances are he won't even notice it. I'm only warning you because you already seem invested in it, and you seem like a good caring friend.
It feels bad, but people have to want to help themselves before anything else constructive can happen
Today I repaired an USB WiFi dongle whose connector had been torn off in an unfortunate event involving the failure of a shitty desk a year ago (IIRC) I used some old printer cable that I had cut in half; tested continuity with my half-working speakers to figure out where each wire ends up in the connector, then soldered it with a really terrible soldering iron that has an almost useless tip, messed up a few times but I ended up succeeding somehow, worked first try... I put some hot glue on the thing because that took some effort to get "right". (ugly tho) The things I got to do to keep tech working when I've got no way of replacing broken things. Also wtf I love USB now, I didn't have almost any hope of it actually working.

Where's the tech gore pics tho
Some things... aren't meant to be seen, only told. (My only camera besides this laptop's is a 3DS and it's 2 A.M.) Accurate calling it gore though, my only tools were: Chinese no-brand soldering iron with oxidized tip Solder Cuticle nippers (to remove insulation, and removing balls of solder from solder wire after failed tinnings of tip) One of the wires had to be soldered the other way around so it didn't move to allow it to be soldered at all and to avoid it from touching the other wires; the cable's insulation is wrapped around this hole in the cover half that it's still there so that pulling from the cable pulls the whole thing instead of the wires. https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/140792/c2377820-efef-4e07-b1a9-3b624c484508/gore.jpg Here's a pic stolen from google, cropped and resized showing a non-severed connector, the part of the plastic still attached, and the hole where I wrapped the insulation around. most wires are soldered so that they go towards the hole part but the second from the bottom is the other way around. It's the exact model in the pic by the way.
welp, Windows is officially bipolar. I had spent tons of hours trying to make network transfer work again few months ago, and now when i booted up my laptop and try to access my pc files over the network it suddenly allows me to. What in the fuck is wrong with you, why do you have to be useless when i'm not busy
Windows seems to just hate networking. It randomly kills my internet adapters, no matter if it's a wireless USB adapter or my motherboard's Ethernet ports.
my wlan device dies clicking the icon in the tray brings it back
Sounds like a power-saving bug. Or maybe the thing crashes for some reason (overheating?) and gets rebooted when you do that.
Yeah, it's really weird. Eth doesn't have the problem. I did try disabling power saving on the device but nothing. It is an adapter built into the motherboard too, so it's not using a standard connection I can just look up (might use like a torn to shit PCIe connection for all I care). A new installation of windows mitigates pretty much every issue I've had with wireless. I believe I've had the problem maybe once though, over like three weeks, instead of twice-thrice a night.
This sugar brand's logo kinda looks like SGI's https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/140792/5bfaea73-4fce-4a41-8e6e-c734caacaa1b/sgi.jpg
hi he's unemployable. it's unfortunate but if you won't even get a GED, why should i bother hiring you even if i can look the other way on you not having a HS diploma/GED?
Baring them being some savant-level code genius with work under the belt to prove it (aforementioned GitHub repo or public projects), this is pretty much spot on. You all know the saying, you can lead a horse to water... I wouldn't burn burn myself out trying to fix their problems, especially if they're unwilling (or unable) to even try.
There are plenty of "adult high schools" over here, where you can get a highschool diploma with ease (a few F-graded lessons that need to be done) in a year with minimal effort. Aren't there any in the US? I have a friend that couldn't finish our high school due to math, physics, chemistry and russian and did all of those in the adult high school within a year with only having to attend 3 days a week at first and only online classes after that. Now he has his high-school papers and can do whatever he wants, if he can pass the schools requirements. This is in Estonia ofc, I don't know how education works in other countries, but I guess there should be something in place for people like him. Being really good at something doesn't mean much when you can't do anything else, that's just how our education systems are. If somebody isn't able to do even that, they have deeper problems that you can't probably fix over the Internet.
that's what the GED is for
I probably have a troubled person in my class in my uni. He doesn't do anything in class, he barely does the required things (if that) and I believe he has been paying for his course credits, because he doesn't seem to have passed them. I have no idea how to even approach him, the teachers can't do it even though they want to (they are really friendly and want to help everyone out), but he probably gets some money into the school, so they haven't kicked him out yet. That's just how our education works. I don't believe that he will finish with us, but as long as there is some flow of money, he will be kept here.

Linus Media Group slowly turning into a nerd's MTV Cribs episode
They're better at that type of content then actual tech journalism, IMO.
which is great because it allows them to stand out in the crowd of tech journalism channels. Offering more diverse content is great
My Netflix account got stolen and Netflixs recovery links all ask you to log in....with the account that was stolen. Genius.
"But that's my dragon your brand is on!" Jesus christ there's simply no boring days in Linus Media Group is there? This guys is outright crazy
Amazon all over again. "Want to contact support about your locked account? Please log in first."
I had to log in to my account in order to contact Amazon about my mom's stolen account where the email was changed. It was an experience that's for sure.
It's gonna be hilarious if AMD drops a 10-core 4GHz 2800X in at £350-£400, would love to see Intel's reaction.
Don't see how they can do 10 cores with their arch without adding more dies.
In case you don't follow Troy's blog: Troy Hunt https://www.scmagazine.com/home/security-news/facepunch-2016-breach-exposed-343000-users/
Yeah it's definitely not happening this generation, unless it's a 10 core Threadripper Otherwise they'd have to come up with a completely new die design just for one niche product. Zen 2 might go up to 12 or even 16 core dies, but somehow I feel that those high core count ones are gonna be reserved for Epyc and Threadripper only. There's not much reason for >8 core dies on a mainstream platform, and if they can make 8 core ones at a significantly lower cost, they probably will.
