that has to be a bug it has to be
Like they probably run, but the configuration it has means it runs before it should
https://www.sqlite.org/codeofconduct.html I am confused, is this meme shitposting or is this a serious affair?
Somewhere in between. They don't expect anyone to follow it word-to-word: 1.2. Participation in the SQLite Mailing Lists Participates in the SQLite Mailing Lists or other public forums are not required to follow this rule. However, comments posted on mailing lists or forums are expected to be courteous and professional, and should be worded as if they were written by someone who is a follower of this rule. Speak only the truth in love, honor all, do not be angry or nurse a grudge, do not return evil for evil, be not proud or a grumbler or a detractor, avoid depraved speech, hate no one, do not love quarreling, and so forth. Violator brought to the attention of the project leader will be reproved, gently at first but with increasing urgency, and may ultimately be banned if the behavior is not amended. And they're also willing to adjust the rules in case they want to hire someone that doesn't like some part of the rules (an atheist would be a good guess): In the future, should someone wish to become a core developer of SQLite and is in every way qualified except that he or she does not feel comfortable with some details of this rule, then appropriate adjustments will be made at that point.
i kinda figured it wasn't going to be that strictly enforced because they directly copied all the "Love thy lord Jesus Christ in all actions" text, which is kind of a difficult thing to enforce in an industry that's majority atheist
It's a decent idea to spend at least a few seconds looking at what the source of the list is. It's technically the OG CoC, if such a thing were to exist. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rule_of_Saint_Benedict
It's a shitpost. The very idea of a code of conduct is complete anathema to some people. Seriously, read the Slashdot comments on anything even touching on it - they're declaring Linux dead for adopting a CoC (and Linus a coward and traitor for doing so), attribute the very idea of "having rules and protocols for human interaction" as some sort of sinister SJW plot, and spout all kinds of conspiracy nonsense about people who've been targeted for removal by the evil SJW cabals. Oh, and it's even used to slander the products - Rust is clearly a giant pile of shit language that no real programmer would use, because they adopted one of those evil Code of Conduct things, by their logic. (I'm actually looking into Rust pretty hard right now, it looks pretty neat.) I don't know if the SQLite guys are doing this as a lighthearted "don't take it so seriously, my dudes" jab, or a serious "SJWism is literally a religion and codes of conduct are literally religious documents" fuck-you. Bit of a Poe's Law thing going on.
I read that SQLite did it because some people were down their throats about not having a CoC, so they put this up to hopefully appease everyone. Because everyone knows that to have a good and altruistic company, you need a good code of conduct.
I didn't even remember the thing still exists. It's probably been 7 or 8 years since I last seriously visited the damn place. Not surprised the comments are cancer when only the loonies are left.
They're normally much better than this. Anything political or touching on the culture war turns into a shitfest (not that that's peculiar to /.), but actual technical stuff usually leads to decent comments, or at least "the headline and summary are bullshit, here's what's actually going on". But yeah, there's a reason I mostly just hit Ars Technica and AnandTech directly these days.
i dabbled in rust for a minute it has good ideas (like traits, holy shit traits are great), but some of the syntax bugs me for reasons i can't really articulate well and i have a harder time agreeing with the borrow checker than i really ought to
That's just semantics. Phrase it as a positive "do this and you can stay" or a negative "do this and you have to leave", the effect and the goal is still to filter out the toxic assholes. (Which is, in fact, a good goal.) Any project involving more than one person is going to have some sort of expectations for how to conduct business, with consequences for failing to meet those expectations, usually being "you're off the team, either fork it or fuck off". When the project is small enough, the code of conduct is unwritten - if you piss the main guy off, you get the boot. Once the project grows past the point where the main guy can know everyone who's working on it, you generally benefit from writing a code of conduct (or an equivalent but differently-named document), to cut down on bullshit drama - "if it's above this threshold, bring it up with me, otherwise stfu and stop whining". And once it's big enough that the main project lead isn't even able to really know all the people leading subprojects, that's when you want a more formal CoC to keep the moderators on the same page. A lot of projects do seem to be adopting a formal CoC earlier than they really need to. That doesn't really hurt, other than making it seem a bit stuffy and formal than it needs to be. I don't see a need for SQLite to have anything more formal than "don't be a dick". But projects as big as Linux? Yeah, they need some level of professionalism in their communications.
Whatever Microsoft's having, I really want a puff of because that shit's INTENSE.
They have one thing going for them, remote desktop is pretty good on Android.
Yup, was just using it like twenty minutes ago. Routing through Japan; Noticable visual delay, but actual inputs are fluid as fuck
The maintainer of one of the optional filters in uBlock Origin went ahead and used their filter as a political weapon, so it got removed from uBlock. https://github.com/uBlockOrigin/uBlock-issues/issues/285 Thank fuck gorhill is a good person and removed the filter from uBO.
His response is so well worded: A filter list is not to be used to express a political stance, unless it is made explicit and obvious in the list's primary purpose. Otherwise I consider this a breach of trust. We need more people like that in tech.
Another adblocker picked up on the change, so they also nuked it. https://github.com/NanoAdblocker/NanoCore/pull/223 I love it when the system works.
I am a a dangerous user sometimes. Enabled Bitlocker on my server and forgot I had to actually be at the server to enter the key. Whoops
Do you know how annoying it is to have to set all your notifications back up?
Suddenly diamonds in the first posts of the thread.
oh explains that then. thanks levelog
Now I feel guilty for having so many coins I could get a huge avatar, but I don't even have a 64x64 one because I can't think of anything good to do.
Bigger tux
How does Win10 react if you take the OS disk from one computer and shove it in another? I'm moving from an X220 to an X220T and I would much prefer just to take the SSD and HDD from the old laptop and put them straight in the new one. I have a feeling something will get upset if I do that though.
If the drivers are similar enough it’ll just keep chooching, but generally you have to renters your Windows key. It’s only really a huge issue if the systems are extremely differently from each other.
Epic: "You should probably turn on 2FA" "Ok i wi-" https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/1755/bd362248-0f38-4a71-a194-2d25d41f7818/image.png ...thanks
My old avatar was 80x93, I have 80x88 available right now. Trying to see if I can get my old avatar up before Garry nukes the forums for good.
Dude, I don't even have a Linux box anymore. Haven't for years. I admin some Linux servers for work, but all the computers I actually sit down and use daily are Windows. Is it actually confirmed Garry's shutting it down? Or is it just another rumor? Because I remember going through this same "teh forums are going away rip" panic after the last big forum overhaul and subsequent bitchfest.
Garry is going to give it until the end of the year to decide if the forums are going to stay up or not
