It still sucks sometimes, but man video decoding like 10 years ago was a fucking joke. The hours spent just to get a video to playback. Now except for VP9, it's effortless to play anything. DRM excluded of course
Decoding? MAN Let's talk about ENCODING. 10 years ago Fraps and Bandicam was just a nightmare to use efficiently. Now we have NVENC and x264.
"unregistered hypercam 2"
Yes... Decoding. Like the topic. Decoding, something everyone did was still a inconsistent joke in 2008. Also Fraps and Bandicam are misleading since while we do have higher performing options, we have much faster hardware. Fraps did lossless recording, which is just as relevant today. Problem is people began jumping into dual cores and new quad cores, and storage was incredibly slow. Besides having limited functions, Fraps performs great.
True, but not everyone had umpteen gazillion gigabytes for a 30 second clip. That was my main problem with fraps, besides maxing out your slow as fuck hdd.
tfw it's faster just to edit data using phpMyAdmin than it is a normal GUI interface. Just a long list of records that take a double click to edit, rather than jumping from page to page Doesn't make data entry any more fun though
Friend from sweden ended up with a broken graphics card and was asking me if it's possible to just replace the graphic card to make it work again. He didn't know what stuff he had in computer so I told him to show me the pics of it. Turns out this swedish mad man was playing modern games on an Acer low profile computer with GT630 and second gen i7. He gave me a budget of 5-6k SEK to build him something that is capable of playing modern games, wasn't AMD and was upgradable in the future. Also to build it in 15 minutes as I've got home from work. https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/209432/bfed7a67-be0a-4a97-95d9-9d78ebb87f8b/image.png Nailed it.

on a pi? yeah no shit
As far as I can tell, that case doesn't come with fans.
on a pi v1 b+
You’ll get way better valu out of a Ryzen CPU.
yeah I have that one too
I don't get why he's against AMD here, he'd probably be able to save some cash for possibly better performance than that i3 It'll also probably last longer in terms of upgradeability, given AMD's supporting the AM4 socket for a another few years.
For sure need to talk him into going with Ryzen. IDK how it works in SEK, but in the US a R5 2600 is only $30 more than the i3 you chose and it would be much better.
I think they said they'd support it until 2020 than we'd see an AM4+ with backwards compatibility.
Being able to switch the mobo and keep the old CPU for new builds in the future is such a god sent mannnn
My CPU is already too old either way, but I probably would have upgraded from Sandy Bridge if Intel didn't just depreciate LGA 1155 after two generations.
Even if you're switching and getting a new CPU, you can still have your old one for testing or BIOS updates.
Just being able to buy a shiny new mobo rather than buying older or used tech is just great. Sometimes these old motherboards are either the same price or more expensive than buying a lower-end updated one, and gives you less value. It's just an all around great deal.
Merry Christmas
Hey look, Level 3 peering is finally back! https://s.gvid.me/s/2018/10/30/Hrg849.png Now everything is right in the wo.. https://s.gvid.me/s/2018/10/30/TXl998.png https://s.gvid.me/s/2018/10/30/blobfrowningbig.png
I'll take "I have no fucking idea about manufacturing, but I'm still going to talk about it" for $1000, Alex. It's the daily double.
I got put on service queue today. I thought the people that call in are dumb. The people that email are even worse.
Well I bit the bullet and asked the question about why not AMD https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/209432/71b4af05-e77c-4947-b6e8-b1c3c5b0918a/Screenshot_20181101-051059_Discord.jpg He thinks that I'm trying to get him to go full AMD because I hate Intel and Nvidia (I mean he's not wrong) Also I finally went from unstable 3rd world adsl to fiber which required switching ISPs. Yay but also fuck because now I don't have a public ipv4 address, the isp router is ipv6 only, I can't set the router into a bridge only mode (requires hardware swap), to have a public static IP they have to swap out the router for bridge only and the router keeps forcing Ipv6 Dhcp server that the cheap HP printer can't get IP from for whatever reason. Like fuck yeah went from 5mbps to 500mbps but fuck because my DDNS can't sync and everything I monitor with zabbix is throwing up Auth errors due of unknown Domain ip and my home server can't talk outside of my network.
Tell him to look up some Ryzen reviews. I've gotten some people who do that to me too though... It's kinda frustrating. Their money, I guess, but bleh.
Just let 'em go with an Intel build, for the price range it's not going to be bad or anything, but they are missing out on potential performance. Maybe they'll learn and regret it in the future, who knows. But best you can do is inform, it's 90% of the time not worth trying to change someone's mind on such things.
Intel is only going to be better if you want to spend twice that on a PC
Okay what. This guy emails us saying he can't access his account, he forgot his password, the password reset is sending to an email that doesn't work... But he sent it from the email he says doesn't work?
Maybe he already has it logged in on, for example, his phone, but can't get in on his PC?
