The best thing you probably learnt from the courses is that you learn quick. Most (tech) companies dont give a fuck unless its one of the higher tier cisco ones or RHEL certification and they're explicitly looking for those people. Thats my (limited) experience in Europe though so might be different for you.
Ugh, figured as much. Still forever stuck at the bottom of the totem pole after all. Fortunately I didn't actually have to pay for anything.
To be fair, the certs are excellent checkbox tickers at some places, where they just throw the certs into job requirements even though they're completely useless.
A+ and the other babby CompTIA certs are really just to help you and an entry-level help desk job If you already work tier 1, they're a waste of time and money. Except for Sec+ if you want to work for the gubbamint
They're like the highschool diploma of IT jobs
Just bought my first brand new keyboard in probably half a decade and celebrated by snapping that piece of shit SteelSeries Apex in half over my knee out on my porch. Fuck SteelSeries and fuck their keyboards. Thank God I finally have the finances to get rid of that dumpster fire of a piece of computer equipment.
What keyboard you go with to replace it?
I went with a HyperX Alloy Elite after tip-tapping on a few keyboards down at the local MicroCenter. This will also be my first ever mechanical keyboard - I went with Cherry Reds because while I prefer the feel of mechanical keyboards, I am sadly one of those few in the minority that really can't stand excessive clickyness out of the keys. The Alloy Elite was right within my preferred budget range and includes a USB passthrough, which was also a major thing for me because my webcam cord is far too short to get anywhere near my actual tower.
What's wrong with SteelSeries' keyboards? Never really used em, I've got a Corsair K65 with red switches. The only thing I really dislike about it is the thick undetachable cable it uses... And I definitely prefer clicky switches, but I couldn't find a tenkeyless with clicky switches at the time.
The Apex just happened to be the second SteelSeries keyboard in a row that turned out to be a total lemon, and their support is absolutely atrocious. I keep my keyboard specifically very clean and their totally idiotic keybed design on the Apex means that on pretty much every unit ever produced, keys will eventually lose their finish and the friction from the sides of the keys themselves actively prevent them from being pushed down. This fucks everything up for me as a touch typer, because I'll have to go back and hit the same key three or more times and make sure I'm pressing it almost exactly over the dead center of the key, otherwise the key just won't go down. I forgot the name of the keyboard I had before it, if I saw a picture I'm sure I would recognize it, but it died just about a year into use and their support categorically refused to do anything for me. No coupon, no refurb unit, they wanted me to pay shipping and service to have it sent back to them for repair. For a $60, I'll just go down to the shop and buy one myself. One of the worst experiences I ever had with computer-related support.
Slagging off Steelseries and you went with HyperX instead? Lmao
Hey. Don't be slagging off Steelseries... Their best mouse was literally the Rival. Best value for money headset back in the day was the Siberia V2s. They also own in the wireless gaming headset department. I will give credit though Kingston did well when they sourced Qpad for their first gen HyperX Clouds(which I'm currently using).
My old Rival still works to this day and it's 3+ years old. My V2s are still kicking just have to wash ear cups. The G6v2 however I'll agree was pretty terrible but I also hate black switches so there's that.
lol the beat-to-shit display model at the shop felt better than every SteelSeries keyboard I have used in the past 5 or so years. sorry that a company you like isn't immune to bad manufacturing runs I guess, what do you want me to tell you?
lol I wouldn't rate Steelseries as a whole but they're objectively the best "gaming" keyboard manufacturer until you look at the actual quality MK manufacturers like Ducky, Varmilo etc.
Finally was ready to jump on the 1054Z last night after checking all possible options for other units. Then 40minutes later I cancelled the order after I told myself outloud "wait what do I even need this thing for". I was experimenting with learning to build buck converters and some switch mode circuits but I just don't have the room for it I think. I was so sad with myself with being minimally responsible.
The only SteelSeries things I own are their now-discontinued 4HD hard mouse mats.
Oh it's 100% completely overkill, but that's just what sparked the idea to get one. It, like many of my recent tools, opened up lots of projects that I wouldn't have considered. But most importantly, it looks neat and I want one. Which drives 99% of my purchases. I also have a $400 giftcard from comcast that I've yet to use haha.
As far as keyboards go, I'm still rocking an old Dell SK-8135. https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/198768/8f7d70ef-d0ea-42b2-b359-ceadecbc302b/image.png These things have been around since the XP days, and mine's a Vista-era one that I've had since around 2010. Pretty much the perfect layout and media buttons for what I need day-to-day, and you really can't get much smaller when it comes to a full 104-key. Mine works just as well as when I got it, and even the key graphics aren't worn at all. I will say though, sometimes I wish I could design my computer peripherals and make my own hardware brand. Especially when it comes to mice; there is no mouse out there that I've seen meet my wishes exactly regardless of price, and the closest one I've found (and bought) has poor build quality.
Have you looked at the Swiftpoint Z? It doesn't just have every single feature I want, but damn near every feature anyone has ever put on a mouse. It's got an accelerometer! There's a fucking screen on it! Some of the buttons can be pulled! Others are pressure sensitive! The only things I can think of that it doesn't have are wireless, and that inertia scrolling thing, and you can get the effect of that with the absolutely glorious bindings editor. The only drawback to it is that it's two hundred fucking dollars. But it's still the best mouse I've ever laid hands on. Otherwise, yeah, I do sometimes wish I could make my own hardware. I kind of hate the Razer keypad thing I have, but it was the only one I could find with mechanical keys. And the software for it is ASS. I could do so much better, if I had the chance to design and build my own.
A mouse with a motion chip? Impressive. I'd been wanting someone to do that for at least a decade due to what yaw detection alone could do for mouse functionality. The pressure-sensitivity is a nice touch, too. That mouse is overkill in some areas, though. I'm not looking for balls-to-the-wall features and customization so much as I am a sensible yet versatile featureset that gives you good bang for the buck. My ideal mouse is a symmetrical mouse with a tilt-wheel (or other two-axis scroller like a ball), wireless with an attachable charging/data cable and removable battery (ideally AAs, since I've already got a bunch of eneloops), and two thumb buttons on each side. I've seen stuff that comes close, but usually they're missing a feature or something (usually wireless) or are too obnoxiously "gamer-y" for my tastes. But that Z-mouse gives me ideas. If I could put in a motion chip and add pressure-sensitivity on all the buttons on the cheap, that would be even more flexibility, plus those are the kinds of things you could just turn off in software and use like a regular mouse if you wanted, so they're not "in the way" if you don't want them. Oh, and good build quality is a must, too. My current mouse (HP XA965AA) got near what I wanted, but the middle-click became unreliable almost immediately and now even the left-click is feeling mushy about a year in.
Would a 500gb WD Blue SSD be worth a 15$ difference versus a 480gb WD Green? I was also considering splurging for a WD Black, but my use case mostly involves storing game , don't think it would be worth the increased price
Apparently the greens are DRAM-less, that's why they're so much cheaper. Which means it could potentially perform a lot slower in certain situations. Don't know the exact numbers though, so look up some benchmarks if you want to know the specifics. But in general, the higher quality SSDs with RAM aren't that much more expensive, so I'd definitely go for that if possible.
I love how my uni is proud of it's "advanced learning techniques" and "ample job opportunities" and we end up having a web dev exam using notepad.
Master's level database course, using Access. Checkmate.
Oh lord. My university was shit but at least they gave us Linux sandboxes with MySQL and all of that shit installed.
I have the 6022BE, I recommend rather getting the 6022BE over the BL. The official vendor software is eh, so I've used it with Sigrok instead, and you can't use the BL as both a logic analyzer and a scope at the same time with Sigrok (I don't know if you can even with the vendor software). The logic analyzer functionality is the same as you'd get from one of those $5 Saleae clones off eBay/Aliexpress, so I'd rather just have the dedicated unit. I'm gainfully employed as of a few weeks ago though, so I might be looking into a real oscilloscope in the near future. It's not full 40 hours, but it's close enough to full salary that I can't really complain (and I get to leave early on Fridays).
Thank god I've been doing databases for years and this is just a fluff course for me but everyone else in there I feel bad for. The undergrad courses used VM covered MSSQL and were so much more technical. I don't even think this idiot covered datetypes... Everything's a VARCHAR(255)
Ride never ends with that video.
ElectroBOOM also just did one on those. Bonus: you get to see him put on a choker. https://youtu.be/njfB_B4cOPU
