PC Building Thread V6 - "running six RGB controller utilities at once" edition

This is true but mostly doesn't matter unless you have extremely high GPS targets or you're using a 2080 Ti. The vast majority of games are going to run GPU bound even with a Ryzen CPU.
Can anyone suggest a compact ATX case that won't look out of place in a media set up, I have an i7 950 and a gtx 650ti just lying around and I thought I would put them to use.
If you're looking for a small case that supports ATX boards, I'm currently rocking a Thermaltake Core G3

Only thing I can say is a detriment is one of the screws holding the graphics card in place stripped the threads, but it's the last screw and not the one in the middle actually holding the card.
While you're moving around the socket protector of a Nehalem 45nm cpu you should grab a cheap Westmere 32nm hexcore off ebay! Even a E5649 overclocked to 4ghz will be a massive upgrade. One of the highest binned Westmeres is the X5675 and they can be found for $25-30 while quad cores start at $3-5 including shipping and hexcores start around $10 with the E5649. Nehalems are really only good for testing boards and updating the bios for a Westmere.

X58 can still be really potent overall with similar to 1st gen Ryzen performance, I stuck a GTX 1080 in mine. ECC memory support also makes it really cheap to grab some used unbuffered ECC off ebay and shove it in. I wouldn't recommend buying the same memory I did but 6x4gb was $50.

Should I buy the 3DMark bundle with PCMark10, 3DMark, and VRMark for testing the performance of PC's I build, or is 3DMark alone good enough?
I went overboard with RGB and ended up buying a Corsair Spec-Omega case

Only problem is that it runs hotter than the face of the sun. It idles at about 50C for the CPU (which is overclocked) and regularly creeps up to about 70C to 80C under load. This is with a 3 fan radiator too, but of course the case has really shit airflow so maybe about 1/10th of the radiator actually gets air across it.
I want a different case and would appreciate recommendations; preferably something I can transplant my existing RGB goodness into.
3DMark is just for people looking for scores, IMO. But if you want to use it, solo should be fine.
Wait for it to go on sale, I think I paid $4.49 for it during the steam thanksgiving sale. I wouldn't bother with PCMark, it's practically useless and LGA 775 platforms used to be able to score higher than a skylake or something really dumb like that, VRMark I'd shrug off as useless.
Goddamn, thanks for the info! I'll be looking into this ASAP.
The Fractal Meshify C is one of the best cases for high airflow right now, but its aesthetics are a bit divisive. I love mine, and the dust filter design is fantastic.

My replacement arrived today, intact. Looks good, but I clearly didn't do enough research, as I was expecting an optical drive slot available.
Most new and "modern looking" cases (like those Fractal Design cases) don't have 5.25 bays anymore.
It's why I like the Obsidian series, and the Dark/Silent Base series.
I'm migrating everything off of a drive to format it, and I'm having trouble finding all of the data. It's a windows 8.1 drive, I thought I got everything from my Documents and game saves and all of that fun stuff, but according to My Computer there's still 100 gigs or so of data still on this drive that I can't account for. Is there any utility that would let me seek this stuff out?
You get the appdata folder? That's hidden by default, and contains your settings for a lot of programs.
shit knowing how hot my laptop gets on hot summer days (today we got 38°C) im rather worried how a pc with fairly powerful components (i5/R5 on the cpu side and like a 1060/570 for the gpu) would fare
I live in the Mojave where it gets to 115F(46C), my I5 7500 had no issues when paired with an AIO cooler during winter or summer, I can't speak for the current build I'm doing with an R5 2600x though.
You might have to spend an extra 50-70 USD on a fancy air cooler, or >100 USD on a decent AiO, but you can still get decent temperatures even that that ambient.
how about the stock ones Ryzen uses? specially the Stealth, since most likely ill get a 2200G
the Stealth is not so good but it's still better than the Intel stock coolers. The Wraith Spire is totally fine as long as you don't mind a little noise.
I'm in the process of changing my rig from a full tower to a small form factor set up, the only concern I have is storage. I currently have several HDDs and SSDs and I'll only be able to fit 2/3 SSDs into the case. So I'm wondering what the best option would be between getting a Hard Drive Dock like this, or committing to making/buying a small NAS. Any advice?
I'd suggest WinDirStat or TreeSizeFree. They won't really show you where things like game saves are per se, but if there is a size discrepancy, they should help you find where something might be.
I use an old version of TreeSizeFree in window mode instead of explorer integration (just found out they did that when getting the link).
I dusted my PC and installed another fan. Got another fan coming in the mail, hopefully that'll help. It's currently back at 76~78°C.
The GPU has been running amazing up until two days ago - my framerate on Rust has been tanking. It drops under 60 fps quite frequently now, as opposed to a solid 70~90 FPS. Turning down the settings doesn't seem to help either. I'm really hoping this is an issue with Rust, and not my GPU.
How do you guys think of it so far?

Bought an AIO- EVGA CLC 240. It's kinda loud, but I have my headphones on when I'm on my computer so I can't even hear it. Only issue- my idle temps are really really weird. I hit 4.2 ghz on my 2600x without any manual input, but I have never seen the CPU go under 24* C. It doesn't go any higher than like 40 though, even at high stress testing. Idk what's up with it.
I'm in need of a new mouse to replace my geriatric Logitech G700 (original version).
I'm looking for wired and wireless capabilities, programmable buttons, and brownie points for LEDs so my mouse goes faster. Budget is about ~$100, but flexible.
Look at the G Pro Wireless, it's very expensive but it can be used wireless or wired, has swappable, magnetic, programmable buttons, and it's incredibly light and accurate to boot.
If you're okay with lack of wired support, using AA batteries, and have smaller hands, I highly recommend the G305, it's an extremely good deal. My personal favorite mouse on the market. Use lithium AAs to make it lighter.
Also take a look at the Razer Mamba Wireless, it's quite good.
I'm really interested in getting a Radeon VII. Is there a market for second hand watercooled Fury X's?
No. 4GB of VRAM isn't enough anymore, at any price point. And it sucks down power harder than I suck the fun out of a room.
Newer games easily exceed 4GB of texture memory usage even on lower settings because of how many gosh darn maps PBR requires for everything.
I mean, it still beats an RX 580 and isn't that far behind a 1070, and there's a market for those? Obviously anyone in the second hand market is someone who's gonna be turning down some settings.
