4850 is faster than the 9800gt, but not by a huge amount, if you don't have the money to get a 4850, then just get a 9800gt.

If you get some extra money (or a bunch) go for the GTX 275.
Most people who are in support of ATI low-mid range cards (ie 4870 1GB) agree that the 275 is better than the 4890.
If you guys want performance grab the 8800 ultra it's awesome.

Look at the specs of the cards, they are pretty much exactly the same.
