i guess now mini display ports can begin the complete replacement of DVI on all computers
I rather like DVI actualy...
Im interested
I don't give a donkey dick if it never appears anywhere but Apple products. But considering it's Intel's thing, maybe it'll appear in some Intel motherboards.
They've killed USB 3, why do you think intel were stalling on it for so long? It was so they could push a vastly superior technology. In 5 years time this should be the standard port for almost everything.
I rather like DVI actualy...
but its the same thing only you no longer have those 2 things to screw in

VGA is still clinging on whilst DisplayPort is making a little progress. USB3 may be "outdated" with the release of Thunderbolt, but I think people (and vendors) are more likely to stick with USB3 thanks to its compatibility with the now ubiquitous USB standard. Intel may have been "stalling" with USB 3, but it can still be found in most new mid-to-high range OEM motherboards. I have a feeling Thunderbolt will end up being like Firewire; a great niche product with a load of performance and good features but not a mass-market success.
Predicting the 100 Gbps fiber optics cable will be called Lightningbolt. You heard it here first.
I rather like DVI actualy...
For what reason? What advantages does it have other than abundance?
For what reason? What advantages does it have other than abundance?
The ability to screw it in?
oh god i just realized there will be thunderbolt flash drives in the near future :q:
How much power does the cable provide compared to USB
Aww, I liked the Light Peak name.
I think the name sounded too much like it was made for displays. Thunderbolt is broader.
1.25 Gigabyte/s? Hot damn.
How much power does the cable provide compared to USB
10 watts for Thunderbolt. Not sure for USB.
How much power does the cable provide compared to USB
Well according to wikipedia USB usually provies 500-900mA (I'm pretty sure the norm is 500 though), and converting to watts with volts*amperes=watts, we have: 5*.5=2.5W and 5*.9 = 4.5W So from 4 to slightly more than 2 times as much power.
I am interested
Well Apple landed themselves quite the exclusive here.
Or Apple goes dickmode and it becomes yet another AppleTalk.
I'm sure Intel would be upset then, considering it's their tech (just like USB)
I'm betting intel will charge AMD an assload to license it. That, and they should make their own inventions to compete, not just adopt intel's innovations.
Screw that man... The last thing we need is every technology company coming out with their own port. You want something as universal as USB where EVERYONE and EVERYTHING uses ONE PORT.
The ability to screw it in?
And both Analog and Digital video signal in one single plug.
This is good. Except apple is going to act like they fucking invented it, Like they try to do with all their other products.
I think Thunderport would have been a more suitable name.
Sounds too much like Thundercunt to me.
oh god i just realized there will be thunderbolt flash drives in the near future :q:
Awesome! Now I can transfer data at the same speeds as USB2/3 but with a port that nothing has!
I can't conciously believe apple benchmarks. Even if it is intel.
Is that enough to run an external 3.5" HDD on its own?
Is that enough to run an external 3.5" HDD on its own?

Power Requirements Power Requirements Voltage +5V±5%, +12V±10% Spin-up Current (Max.) 2.0A Seek (typical) 5.7W Read/Write (typical) 6.3W Idle (typical) 5.1W Standby (typical) 1W Sleep (typical) 1W
So considering one single ThunderBolt port can handle 10 watt, it should be more than enough for ONE disk. Maybe two if it's "green" disks.
Thunderbolt doesn't make sense...Thunder is a sound and you would assume by bolt they mean a spark of some sort I think I preferred the name Light Peak. Thunderbolt sounds like something from the '80s which you can imagine to be orange bold letters flying around a CRT screen with a cheesy smile from a teenager connecting her "High tech" thunderbolt compatible mp3 player.
I don't think it should be called light peak if it doesn't use fibre optics anymore
I think USB is still the best for flash drives and such. It's got the perfect size. I can't imagine a flash drive with such a small connector like Thunderbolt.
um its about the same size as a usb port [editline]25th February 2011[/editline]
Well Apple landed themselves quite the exclusive here.
yeah sure not only is there no technology out for it, only about 5% of people know about it. and maybe .5% are apple owners aka its not gonna get used atm
