The 9800 series uses the same core as the 8800GT, he wouldn't see much of a benefit and it would be a waste of money.
Pfft I went from a 8800GT to a 9800GT and had a 100 FPS increase yeah right not much of a benefit
Remember that the Source engine gets like three times more performance running an ATI card than an nvidia card
This is bullshit. Back when I had a piss computer and a 7300GT, I could run most source games on high settings, at a modest resolution. Got a X1950pro, while it ran at "better FPS" (it is a more powerful card obviously) I suddenly had tons of memory buffering going on - lots of stutters in the source engine (and only in the source engine). Didn't get the problem with my 7300GT, and it had the same video memory too.
Remember that the Source engine gets like three times more performance running an ATI card than an nvidia card
false, source is actually pretty brand neutral
I have the 8800 ultra from nvidia, it's beast. Runs all games I own on ultra high.
Well I need a bit of help. I need more then just a graphics card now. Seeing that this old one has about...250watts power supply, most graphic cards will blow up my pc. So this is what I wanted to get: http://www.compusa.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=4465483&CatId=1079 Compusa is nearby so I was just going to use them, not bad :/ Other things: (ram) http://www.compusa.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=4664179&CatId=1554 (Graphics card) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814143149&Tpk=bfg%20geforce%209800%20gtx (Hard Drive) http://www.compusa.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=4138742&Sku=TSD-1500AS (processor) http://www.compusa.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=4924304&Sku=A79-0245
I find that Source does run really well on ATi Cards, but perhaps I'm just biased. Also - wait a little, ATi 4890'll be cheap soon! The 5000 series will kill its price
No, he should go with whatever card is best for his budget.
ATI might be a better choice now... It's cheap, easy and performance wise- it's excellent compared to Nviida
I've got an HD 4850 512MB with no overclocking and it really does fly in Source games (1280x1024, vsync @ 60Hz, 16xAF, 8xAA, full detail in Orangebox/TF2). Excellent card and cheap as chips.
The 3850x2 is going really cheap right now and is on par with a 4850
A 4770 can nearly match a 4850 and uses less power. I'd suggest a 4770 if it's cheaper.
This is the best idea for someone with an older computer. edit:
Well I need a bit of help. If that's the case, then you'll want to start with a better vidcard than a 9XXX series. A 9XXX series or ATI equivalent only makes sense in an upgrade situation.

It's on that site also.
Yea, I'm gonna stay with the 9800. Because here's why; I stated before I'm not a huge gamer, I've been using a 6150 for 4 years now...I just need a new one to play the orange box, and make videos and such. I'm not the hugest gamer. Hell, I'd get a card in the 7, 8 series. Actually, the 8 series has hd correct?
This is probably the best bang for your buck. Recertified EVGA GTX 260 896MB - $139.99 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130482 You also get a free game if you register it with evga :D [editline]12:22PM[/editline]
Yea, I'm gonna stay with the 9800. I'll need two things before I can get that. Also, it takes up 2 express slots?
