I really, really wouldn't count on being able to fix the old drive. Odds are pretty decent that it's completely toast and you're out of luck.
My hard drive died as well.
If the data is that important to you, the cost of a hard drive for even a chance of the logic-board swap working is little money.
I've never had a problem with the logic board swap, the only problem is when they do a revision the drive which changes the internal mechanics or read/write areas aswell as the board itself.
Apart from that it's very easy to do, usually just sprung contacts for the motor and a ZIF ribbon for the armature and that's it.
Best bet to look for a used one of the same age for best chance of success.
What are your PC specs? Chnces are you might not need 650W so you can save money there. If it helps, I run a quad core, 4870, 2 hards drive, DVD burner and 4GB RAM off of 460W and my PC runs fine.
AMD Athlon x2 64-bit 3GHz
4890
1.5 TB HDD
IDE DVD Drive (fuck)
4GB Ram (possibly faulty)
Looks like I don't need 650W, but I've already ordered it. At least I have future proofing, eh?

My hard drive model is already obsolete and out of stock, they now produce F3s instead of F2s apparently. Or maybe it was just out of stock?

If they're already on the F3 then it's likely they went through several revisions of the F2, so you might have some trouble finding a matching board.
A) I use Windows 7.
B) Where was it supposed to back it up to? Only one HDD was plugged in.
Another partition maybe? Although that wouldn't apply in this situation because it exploded.
Damn, imagine having to explain that to someone at tech support. "Yeah, part of my hard drive exploded. *pause* No, this isn't a prank call. Hello? Hello!?"

Expensive... Though if you really need it...

It costs about $700, they can give you a quote and if they can't get the data, then they charge a $200 "Attempt" fee.

Attempt fee!? Bastards. My dad's trying to get one of his "techy" friends to give it a go, so fingers crossed there. If not I think I'll just try to replace the board myself, £500 is pretty extortionate. I could buy a whole new graphics card and awesome screen for that money :|
have you tried blowing it neo :P <3

5870 and 1920x1080 certainly sounds like a better use of money
