I have a G15 v2. Convince me to buy the Corsair K60 for $65.
I almost ordered a topre realforce but £180for a standard tenkeyless layout was to much I would have paid more for something with a design similar to poker or hhkb but they arent available with UK layout.
In the end I ordered a filco ninja majestouch2 with red caps

K60 looks ok for the price but I would get something fully mechanical or I would end up wanting to replace it,if you want mechanical but don't want to spend much unicomp seem pretty cheap

It's comfortable to type on, it'll last for ages without wearing down and it's practically a steal at that price.
How much could I sell my Filco Majestouch 2 with browns for? It's about 8 months old or something, and the F keys keycap slides off (but it stays on fine), doesn't click, something snapped D:
uh $90

Yeah. I just bought a Nighthawk keyboard off Massdrop because it had backlighting and MX Blues, and I want new keycaps for my HHKB, I want a full size Topre keyboard and some keycaps for that one, and I want a Unicomp.
It's a sickness.
So I think it's about time to replace my old banged up standard keyboard and I've become interested in mechanical keyboards. I'm going to need a keyboard that's good for both gaming and lots of typing / programming. I decided I might as well blow 100€+ on a keyboard if it's gonna last me a long time and enhance my experience. I've heard many people say good things about mechanicals, how amazing they feel to type on, etc etc. But will it actually make me type faster (I 10 finger touch type) / be more comfortable / make it less tiring to type on compared to a standard keyboard?
Also, do all mechanicals have 10 key rollover (or at least 5)? It's been a minor annoyance in a few games on my current keyboard when some keypresses wouldn't register if I held down certain combinations of 4+ keys at once.

Pretty sure all have at least 6 key rollover, but it's not like it's impossible to make one with less, just unlikely that one would have less. And yeah you'll be able to type faster eventually.

If you touch type really well then a mechanical will definitely increase your potential performance and endurance, mainly because you don't have to force the keys all the way to the bottom position for them to register (only half-way; 2 mm for cherry keys).
fuck yeh filco majestouch2 ninja (cherry red) just arrived

Those are the three reasons as to why you would use a mechanical in the first place.
As for the rollover, all keyboards have at least six key rollovers with USB, and it's not going to get any better than that on USB. You need a PS/2 connection if you want N-KRO.
Also, what kinda switch do you think you want?

Some keyboards have work-arounds built into their firmware to support more than 6 keys over USB (for instance, K60 and K90). For completely reliable n-key rollover you'd want to use a PS/2 connector.
Sounds good, I will be getting a mechanical keyboard then. About only 6 key rollover on USB vs more on PS/2 - What the fuck? How can something that was created many years later be worse? I just can't wrap my head around the fact that someone thought this limit would actually be a good idea. Anyway, I think 6 keys at a time should be enough.

I don't want it to be too noisy. Judging by the OP, I guess that means no blue switches, I guess I wouldn't like the higher force required for the black ones either. Which would you recommend to be a good compromise for both gaming and typing?
Brown switches, go for a Das or Filco, they should be in your price range
Those don't seem to have wrist rests though, personally I find that uncomfortable as hell. Especially if it's a thick keyboard.
You can get wrist rests for filcos, though.
On the first page the pictured k60 has rubberized/textured keycaps on WASD and 1-6.

It will, thanks for the heads up :)
[editline]8th February 2013[/editline]
WASDKeyboards has some nice options for keycaps, but I'm not seeing rubberized.

This is what I'm talking about.
From the reviews I read the red caps are just red painted plastic that feels like all the other keys
I wish they were rubber
At my local Frys they had the k60 on display with the extra caps on them, they are rubber, hard rubber but definitely rubber
I wanna know where the hell you people like that actually have mechanical keyboards on display. Must be the same places that has a Craigslist that doesn't suck.
Seattle, at the best buy I sometimes go to they have a couple, but at Frys they have a whole isle of keyboards and mice out on display that you can play with, with the boxes above/below them so you can bring them to checkout
Last time I was there they probably had 20 different mechanical keyboards out from various companies in surprisingly good shape
So I looked around to see which mechanical keyboards I can actually buy in my country, and there doesn't seem to be many options available. I have come across the Gigabyte Aivia Osmium though, and it seems to have everything I'd ever need, for an ok price (~110€). It has red switches which should be good for gaming, but I see the opinions are pretty split on them for typing, some people prefer browns/blues while others absolutely love the reds. I guess they should feel familiar enough if I'm coming from a standard keyboard?
Other options I've seen are Razer Blackwidow, Corsair K60 and Steelseries 6Gv2 for about 90€ (none of them have a full wrist rest though), and Logitech G710 (150€ - too expensive for my taste)
I believe it's like this: The "gaming" switches lack the tactile "bump" that signals that the key has been pressed. A touch-typist, who only presses down on keys lightly, will use these bumps to determine when he can cease pressing down on a key and move on to the next. So an efficient touch-typist may be limited by the lack of a tactile bump in red and black switches. If you know that you will press keys all the way to their bottom position (like you're doing with a rubber-dome keyboard) then you will probably not need to be concerned. While you're gaming you will probably always bottom out the keys because you tend to hold them down and/or not switch between them as fast as you do when typing, and their lighter actuation force will make them less tiring to use in that situation.
That's what I make of it, at least.

If you're conflicted about switches, see if you can order a switch sample kit from WASD.
do they include topre and buckling spring?
do they include topre and buckling spring?
No, WASD keyboards don't use topre or buckling spring.
so really besides the feel of mechanical keyboards what warrants the 1000% price hike, compared to the cheap $10 ones?
I'm genuinely curious, I can type about 95-100wpm consistantly on a cheapo keyboard, will a mechanical keyboard help me type faster?
