if you can get steelseries and want a wristrest what about the 7g http://steelseries.com/products/keyboards/steelseries-7g#specifications
So I looked around to see which mechanical keyboards I can actually buy in my country, and there doesn't seem to be many options available. I have come across the Gigabyte Aivia Osmium though, and it seems to have everything I'd ever need, for an ok price (~110€). It has red switches which should be good for gaming, but I see the opinions are pretty split on them for typing, some people prefer browns/blues while others absolutely love the reds. I guess they should feel familiar enough if I'm coming from a standard keyboard?
Other options I've seen are Razer Blackwidow, Corsair K60 and Steelseries 6Gv2 for about 90€ (none of them have a full wrist rest though), and Logitech G710 (150€ - too expensive for my taste)
I love Gigabyte, but that thing is fantastically ugly.

Good god. That is a wrist wrest with a keyboard tacked on.
so really besides the feel of mechanical keyboards what warrants the 1000% price hike, compared to the cheap $10 ones?
I'm genuinely curious, I can type about 95-100wpm consistantly on a cheapo keyboard, will a mechanical keyboard help me type faster?
Well, most people can type about 10ish wpm faster on mechanicals from what has been reported in this thread. They are also less fatiguing to type on than membrane boards.

Comfort, better construction, keyboard will last far longer with mechanical switches, less typing fatigue, click clack.
uh less fatigue? have you guys even tried any of the heavier mechanical switches
all there is to it is that you're pressing down on an individual switch mechanism consisting of a spring.. rather than a raised dome on a sheet of cheap rubber
Honestly, unless you're using something like Clears, Blacks or Buckling, it's easier to type on mechanical's than rubber dome because you're not jamming the keys to the bottom every time you type.
ugh now I wish I wouldn't have gotten a Nighthawk X8 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16823126299 that's such a good priiiice

eh reading about the backlights made me feel better
No regrets about the Nighthawk.

I thought people said it was a gimmicky keyboard and wasn't really that great. Although personally i wish they stocked it in Australia as i would of bought one.

I'll decide about that in approximately 2 weeks when I get it

Don't remind me. I'm waiting on it too.
The only thing I'm worried about are the keycaps not feeling as good or sturdy as my Das.

Yeah I watched a review that mentioned some of the longer keycaps (shift, enter, backspace, etc.) being kind of wobbly and it kind of scared me then I tried it out and realized the ones on my QuickFire Pro do pretty much the same thing so I don't think it'll bother me.

I just watched a video that mentioned that and my Das does it too. It's probably because of the kind of stabilizers they use and, after using my Das for over a year, it's not that big of a deal.

I can't remember but some company used to make a keyboard that utilized two or more switches for extended keys, all I can remember was that is was expensive as fuck.

Solid as fuck.

It doesn't look so bad in real life, and holy fuck is it well built compared to the steelseries 6gv2/7g
Probably one of the best mech boards
it's really underrated, I wish I heard more about it from people or could recommend it more often but some people just don't like it. the AIVIA thing or whatever it says in the top right is ugly though.
The USB3 port is a cool feature but reds arent that nice for typing
The USB3 port is a cool feature but reds arent that nice for typing
depends on how you type, I'm fine typing with red switches
My old keyboard was blues which is probably why I I don't like typing on red switches
I almost got Reds on the Nighthawk I ordered but I didn't like the idea of not having something tactile, so I just ordered Blues. I was also unsure about how light they would be but my HHKB is 45g so I'm sure I could deal with it. Next time I want to look into another switch, if ever, I might consider Browns.

I actually kind of like the "90s keyboard goes futuristic" look. Judging by the reviews it's built like a tank, so it's appropriate that it also looks like one :v:
I decided to go ahead and order it, I will let you guys know what I think of it when I get to test it out thoroughly.
I see that different cherry switches have different actuation forces, obviously... but I want to see how much actuation force a typical 'membrane' keyboard uses... can't seem to find that information anywhere.
I know the difference between them is that you don't have to bottom out like you do with a membrane but HOW much force does a membrane use >_>"

if you're in the US, a nickel weighs in at 5g so you can just stack those on a key to find out
if you're in the US, a nickel weighs in at 5g so you can just stack those on a key to find out
well I stacked a bunch of varying coins (looked at weight of each) and at 72.19 or 71.69 grams can't recall which, it pressed a key... so I'd assume 70g but probably not the most accurate of tests
I want to learn dvorak but I don't want to buy a new set of keycaps and I don't want to make my current ones sticky with stickers. Any ideas?
I want to learn dvorak but I don't want to buy a new set of keycaps and I don't want to make my current ones sticky with stickers. Any ideas?
I've actually started trying Colemak apparently it's even better between hand alternations and quite a bit more like qwerty than dvorak... you're not supposed to look at the keyboard if you want to learn a keyboard layout so there's no real reason to switch the keys
http://colemak.com/wiki/index.php?title=FAQ
well it depends what language you're going to type in too though, dvorak and colemak were 'designed' for english but work good on other languages one more than the other don't know obviously which one is better for certain languages but if you're going to type in english you won't have that problem
Colemak moves only 17 keys, while Dvorak moves 33 keys.
There are some keyboards with dvorak AND Colemak but are rare and pricier
But the benefits of dvorak over colemak is that dvorak is the second most popular layout compared to qwerty and colemak is the third and isn't officially recognized as a layout on windows operating systems, later versions of mac have the layout installed and linux has it installed already according to the colemak website/forums
edit number 5000: you have to 'install' the layout, which isn't hard to do at all though
Holy shit I just realized I press c with the wrong finger, the index finger. You're supposed to type with your middle finger? That just feels so awkwardddd
Maybe that's why I can't type faster than a few words over 100 wpm
Anyone else use their index finger on c?
I don't use home row because I'm a rebel

weird, keyboard layout and proper typing have less to do with typing speed than you seem to think, maybe?
Just use QWERTY or whatever you grew up with.

I don't use home row because I fucking hate typing like that.
