nVidia Geforce 8400GS 512MB Budget Card Good Enough To Play Source Games (High Settings)?

Alright, to clear something up that I was stupid to not say earlier, THIS IS NOT MY PERMANENT PC. I am using it for the summer and I don't want to invest much into it as I will be back to my other pc (Cyberpower Gamer Ultra AMD Radeon HD 5450 1GB).
Sorry for not clearing this up. I'd rate myself dumb but I really dont feel like being called a loser by a website.
how much did you pay for that cyberpower?

a 5450 is the kind of shit card you should be using to hold yourself over, 4 year old technology is a waste of cash even if you go out of your way to buy the absolute worst 4 year old card
also cyberpower get out
Pepper;30731078']how much did you pay for that cyberpower?
About $500. There was no need to spend more because it performs excellently on the games I play. Also it was my first 1TB hdd.
Second hand 9800
Replace 5450 with it
Put 5450 in emachines PC
GOGOGOGO
NewEgg rocks.

Problem... 5450 is in North Carolina... I'm in wisconsin.
Then get the 9800 and install it in this PC
when you leave take the 9800 with you and replace 5450 in cyberpower
When you come back (if you do) install 5450 in emachines

I don't have the money to get the 9800. Plus I don't need to upgrade my 5450. It works fine and fast. Very reliable.
Also, pepper, thanks for your help thus far.
Hell this thing costs THE SAME than an 8400 and it's six times better and four fucking generations newer. It'll be able to play source games with antialiasing and motion blur (i don't even think the 8400 is capable of running basic postprocessing like AA or HDR. the 5400 definately can)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814121377
and even THAT is a fucking bad idea.
[editline]27th June 2011[/editline]
so basically you are retarded if you buy an 8400 in 2011
in 2007 you would have been retarded so why buy one four years later????

Interesting. I could max out Source games (except for TF2) on a PCI 8400GS (1360 x 768). Not rock solid 60 fps mind you, but that may have something to do with the fact I was using a Pentium III with only 512 MB of SDRAM, so it was probably being bottlenecked. But it was my primary machine for games since my laptop could run fuck all on a GMA 950.
But OP, if you can get a better GPU at a similar price, I would take it. An 8400 GS was my ONLY choice at the time, because it was my only option for PCI.

This was the exact post I was looking for.
-User had the same card
-Got good results
-same situation as me (except for the pci part)
Thanks for the post, those videos I posted and your post now have me at ease about getting this card.
:)

I think it'll be fine for now.
I'll mail you my now unused 4870 if it will fit in your case.

did you seriously ignore the whole fucking post about a 5450 for the same price
the 8400 is FOUR YEARS OLD
you may have been like 8 years old at the time and not remember but THE 8400 SUCKED THEN TOO
buy the fucking 5450 that cheesemonkey linked at the very least

I'm not sure his 300 watt PSU can handle a HD4870

I could use that very well, I have a GeForce 9100. I can't run newer games really at all and Source seems to make my graphics card struggle with shaders so bad I have to put it on DX 8.0 to get rid of them, for about 30 FPS

Man, that would be great. I would love you eternally forever. However, there might be a problem. I dont have a PSU that can support it. There isnt any 6 pin power cords for it. :(
I was all excited but then I did some research to see what it was like and I found out you need a 6 pin power cord, which I dont have.

Ok.. turns out I have a 550w PSU.
So, if I have 550w to start with... lets take away the processor power...
550-130w = 420...
420 - RAM (3w) = 417
417 - HDD (30w) = 387
After the biggest power suckers are all added up I still have a little under 387w left on my psu for usage. So I can support the 4870... I just need the cable, right?
If you have a 550w PSU with no 6-pins it's probably a dodgy brand and thus more like a 300w power supply, which I would not trust to power a 4870 off of a molex-6pin adapter.

Just get 2 of these http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16812196870
I have a triple core AMD and I'm using a 5450 512mb DDR3 version(important DDR2 is much slower).
Source games are great at 1024x768, including Portal 2. This is all high settings, but no AA or AF. Some Source games I can even play at 1280x1024.
However, newer games are borderline unplayable at even 1024x768. The Deus Ex HR leaked copy is a good example, 18-25fps is what I get in that. Dungeon Siege 3 at 1280x1024, all high settings, is 15-25fps. 64bit cards really choke on resolutions above 1024x768, that's the bottom line.
As far as using a 4870, what's the current output of your 550w PSU? Under outputs it should say something like "12V 30A", the number next to the 'A' is what you want to note.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814150544 is the best you will get

I was wrong earlier. I only have a 300w psu and this card needs 350w. I cant support it. Thanks though!

I have a 280w psu running that card (actually the 5550), E5400, 2gb ram, 2 HDD's, 3 fans and a CD drive, it will work
You should consider saving up a bit more until you can buy something better. You will save money in the long run, because you WILL want to get a better card in the future.

Ok. I will trust you. Im going to do a tiny bit of research on that card and I'll get back to the threads and post if I'm going to get it.
Oh, and it says its 64bit. I dont have a 64bit os. Does that matter?
