• Valve rubbishes Linux Steam rumours
Wait, where's this leaked Linux version of Steam? When I tried Linux I couldn't find it..
Valve disabled access to the update server.
Did anyone actually download it?
There was a big thread on it at Phoronix. They got it working to the point where it would display a mangled version of the log-in prompt. It was just enough to prove that Valve was working on native Linux binaries.
Because Valve has never lied to us...
It'll probably be released with EP3 :v:
It'll probably be released with EP3 :v:
I see what you did thar. But really, I hope Valve is just trolling, but i doubt it.
Problem: ATI drivers suck balls.
imo, valve games on linux is not needed. Almost everyone uses Windows or Mac nowadays. The ones that do use linux, often dual boot with windows. I think valve doesn't have to waste their time offering an alternative for people who are either too lazy (or poor) to dualboot with windows.
up until literally a few days ago I was single booting Linux and Linux only. I, along with many others, simply dislike Windows. If steam is released for Linux, I'll reinstall Linux, delete Windows and download steam immediately. I prefer Linux over Windows but Windows has all the stuff I love :frown:
Note he said they weren't working on it 'right now' and then proceeded to talk about having stuff planned quite far into 2011. He chose his words carefully! So basically they might work on it towards the end of next year?
Is Steam on Mac working 100% yet?
Is Steam on Mac working 100% yet?
It has since launch?
Once Steam is on Linux, people produce EASY TO USE blu-ray tools, and Gimp 2.8 comes out, Linux will fulfill my every dream, and Windows can go fuck itself.
Once Steam is on Linux, people produce EASY TO USE blu-ray tools, and Gimp 2.8 comes out, Linux will fulfill my every dream, and Windows can go fuck itself.
dd Easiest thing ever.
EASY TO USE blu-ray tools
This will never happen for a DRM-encumbered format. I refused (and still refuse) to buy into the whole Blu-ray/HD-DVD HDMI HDCP farce. I think much of the FOSS community feels the same way. I do realize the hypocrisy of me boycotting Blu-ray but eagerly awaiting a Linux Steam client. Damn Valve for making awesome games.
If Steam was released for Linux, my dreams of having a gaming OS would be closer to reality. Custom distro anyone :sigh:
ftfy

In the age of fast enough internet conenctions and the fact you watch a film maybe once or twice then it is just taking up physical space... why do we even need a physical medium? Of course, then this gets plastered in DRM too, shooting themselves in the foot. - Will they ever concede that "If it can be played, it can be copied"?

I'm taking Phoronix's side on this. There's just too much evidence (including a nearly-working client).
how about a distro that ditches all the FOSS zealot crap, and includes better software than the GPL alternatives. that would be the best distro around.
how about gnu goes back to its roots.
how about a distro that ditches all the FOSS zealot crap, and includes better software than the GPL alternatives. that would be the best distro around.
The only reason GNU/Linux got as far as it has is the "FOSS zealot crap". In case you haven't noticed, all the closed-source binary blobs we get cause problems. Video card drivers don't run right, Flash is unstable as fuck, etc. The FOSS stuff works great because the "zealots" can promptly fix whatever's wrong instead of waiting on the whim of a company who doesn't give a shit. [editline]02:04AM[/editline] Also, look into Gentoo/Arch. They don't have a problem including anything.

Some people aren't happy unless it's GPL, and I think that's ridiculous.

The four I use (Debian, Ubuntu, Gentoo, Arch) all include it -- and Debian is one of the strictest mainstream distros there is. I even went so far as to check gNewSense (package list here), which is fully endorsed by the FSF and as "FOSS zealot crap" as it gets, and they still have zsh in their main repo.
