I guess all 4 icons are just links, you can remove their label with a blank space. Spacebar won't work though, but ALT+0160. Could make it look a whole lot better
The icons look fine to me, too lazy to set up keyboard shortcuts.
Edit: I agree, desktop icons are terrible.

Turns out a fork of [I]bar-aint-recursive[/I] can display X bit map images. Dingbat fonts are a thing of the past.
