I don't know what's so hard about keeping your desktop tidy, just create a folder in My Documents or something and dump all of your shit there. If navigating there is an issue, just create a shortcut to that folder and put it on your desktop.
Figured I might as well post my laptop, same layout as my desktop pc (sort of) [t]http://a.pomf.se/naesnb.png[/t]
I use my desktop as an active workspace and then clean it out every few months, but I don't think mine has ever gotten that bad
the only reason i don't mind people using the desktop as a temp directory is because Windows doesn't really have a suitable temp directory for human use Linux has /tmp, OS X probably has /tmp or similar, Windows has "C:\Users\you\AppData\Local\Temporary Files". Not only is "C:\Users\you" not a directory the average user even bothers to access, but AppData is hidden by default. [editline]30th May 2015[/editline] but i still dumb for huge amounts of icons even if you use it as a temp directory, because a temp directory should be used for temporary files
Does anybody else here using multiple computers keep one separate for LAN storage only? I have a crappy but quiet (as it never really does anything) HP prebuilt I keep tucked away with 2TB of space for music, video, uninstalled games, images and whatever and this doesn't seem to be a popular method. My laptop SSD couldn't fit a fraction of it, and the other tower comp I use is off by default to save energy, so a low-key, LAN-only tower hidden away is the only way I figured to keep a massive collection of personal files for access regardless of whether I have an internet connection or not.

If you have Windows clients though, Samba does a pretty wonderful job as far as serving Windows filesharing goes (though Windows filesharing has been broken for me client and serverside in every Windows OS after XP, so YMMV). I do of course recommend running Linux on your file server no matter what sharing protocol you wind up using, though, since you can choose to not install all the graphical bits, which means more storage space for you (also less processor and memory overhead but since all you're doing is serving files that's not so big a deal)
I've been using Windows share on it fine without trouble except when anybody tries to connect to it with a Macbook. I have a separate prebuilt Dell as a web server running CentOS which has been good enough with WinSCP. Kind of wish the local server could run Linux but with the ability to browse it as a network drive in Windows explorer, which reminds me, thumbs.db files are a huge pain in the ass and mass amounts of thumbnails take forever to load.

I shovel shit into a folder on my desktop. When that gets big because I have too many files taking up space (120GB SSD) then I either clean it out or just throw it into a bigger drive. I do clean it up... Until then. I can't be fucked. Currently my Desktop folder in my desktop only has 1GB which is fair enough.
I drag shit onto my desktop all the time, I have to open explorer for them though 20gb wtf
keeping this unchecked is the best way to do it
My brother unchecked that for me once, before I knew about it. Before doing so he print screened my desktop and set it as my background (icons and all). It took me longer than it should've to work out why my icons weren't working [editline]31st May 2015[/editline] Here's my simple desktop now [t]http://i62.tinypic.com/2iraquc.jpg[/t]
B) Iso Programs on Windows 8+
Windows 8.1 always has problems with my linux distros.
Good news for KDE people who are thinking about Plasma 5: Existing themes for KDE 4 may not require all that much porting. [t]http://jesusfuck.me/di/ZJCG/tarsonisdesk.png[/t] In my case there's still a few little bumps and creases I need to smooth out, but if you're not using a transparent-as-shit theme like I am it might "just werk" for you
windows 8 is pretty shit at making bootable discs
yeah i'm not sure what you're talking about i've never had a problem with Linux or Windows boot discs when using the built-in image burner i mean i can totally see reasons for needing more capable ISO programs but the image burn feature owns bones man
