This is what happens if you forget to plug your CPU fan in

Yeah, thanks :)

Who wants to be motherboard buddies with me?
Got a dell-fuckedup Foxconn :smug:

What demo is that?
It looks as if the video is being encoded on one of those machines at some points...
Lucky you, the heatsink radiated the heat way efficiently enough to avoid permanent damage.
My S478 mobo will not allow you to POST unless the fan is connected and my older Athlon XP system had a thermal cutout built into the chip.
Sucks how boards these days don't have anything to prevent shit like this.

I'm guessing the first isn't done anymore because of water cooling and AFAIK modern mobos will shut down if the CPU gets too hot.

I have a dirt cheap motherboard. My last one broke and I didn't have enough for a good one so I just bought this. Gigabyte GA-G31M-S2L. Cost me about £50
If I did that with my Q9450, it would probably turn off the PC or burn in like 5 minutes. It's already going 50-60C with a fan plugged in.
This happened to me once. My system wouldn't boot because it recognized the CPU fan was not plugged in. I guess not all systems do this?
Mine will stop and pause to say the fan's not detected, but gives me an option to hit F1 a few seconds later.
Stupid thing should know I have a 40cm box fan pointed right at my OCZ Vendetta 2 with the temperatures it runs at. :P
Good luck diagnosing POST issues. You won't even know it is a post issue in the first place. Plug that shit in boi.
I find the beep codes to be mostly useless anyway, the two digit display is FAR more useful.

My mobo's BIOS has options to disable warnings like that, maybe yours does too?
My CPU just shuts off if my water pump stops working. It starts up, it bluescreens, I restart, and it won't start up. I have to wait until it kills the power or I turn it off and wait for it to go to normal temperatures.
Not only will it throttle but if it gets too hot the computer will shut off entirely to keep it from burning up. This will happen a few seconds in if you don't have any fan or heat sink attached.
Most computers will not automatically turn off or beep if the CPU starts overheating, or the fan fails. There's an option in the BIOS to set the CPU warning temperature (and sometimes automatic shutdown temperature) and the fan failure warning.
Most of the time these options are disabled, unless otherwise enabled by the user. After BIOS flashes or BIOS clearings, these options will also reset and be disabled.

Oh, well they were turned on on my motherboard.

Shit I have no idea.
Also, since we're sharing hardware failing stories.
At one point, I had an SLI setup, of two 9800 GT's, one being brand EVGA, the other PNY. After about 6 months of owning the PNY (which I had bought from Bestbuy) the fan was making a terrible noise, and temperatures were skyrocketing in my case. I quickly remove the card, and test it to find out that the fan was having friction at the spot where it was mounted. No amount of duster, high-speed spinning, or very meticulous weight offsetting fixed it.
Which is why I will never buy a PNY product again.

Oh, great. I have a 9800GTX+ made by PNY that I also got from Best Buy. :v:

I had a quick look, I couldn't find anything on my Asus P5E (albeit flashed with the Rampage Formula).
I can confirm that my Rampage Formula motherboard does indeed flip shit when I don't plug the fan in. It has a little status screen that tells you what's missing too.
