I use Avast (paid). Aside from the DING YOUR VIRUS DATABASE HAS BEEN UPDATED thing it's maintenance free and has worked great for me so far.

That can be disabled in the Settings menu, I probably wouldn't still be using it if the sounds couldn't be disabled.

The update pop-ups still don't beat the old (version 3.something) virus alert pop-ups.

and then you read the text, "Don't panic, choose one of the 3 options :downs:"
MSE, Comodo and your common sense should be a great combo. Comodo isn't always necessary but I find it a nice program. And you can probably swap MSE with something like Avast or Avira.
Avira's actually pretty lightweight and great.
