Run VMWare ESXi to start off with. Then install mineos to run your minecraft servers. Install a small windows environment to run your other servers.

ESXi is REALLY picky about what hardware it runs on.
Run Minecraft server with Windows XP -> Lag at the first player
Run the same server with debian CLI -> stable at 8 players

That's a problem with MC's shitty coding, not the OS. There were a few MC server builds between 1.4-1.6 that would spam millions of packets and overflow the entire network stack, necessitating the OS needing to be restarted. Simply disabling/enabling the NIC wouldn't fix the problem.
MC is a fun game, but the code is absolute shite.
Windows server 2003, or Debian if you want to learn something.

it really isn't, I've installed it on quite a few desktops they play fine things like HA or DRS may not work with the nics but esxi 4.1-5.0 will work on most hardware
My Prime Concern for switching to a linux was that me being able to keep the server up to date easily and quickly was sending files through network like //PCNAME/directory. But if I remember, Linux cannot do this with a windows pc.

I just installed Debian and got Missing Operating System
you can do that with samba
[editline]30th September 2011[/editline]
also if you're comfortable with command line you can use arch

Refused to work on the desktops I have laying around, including one with a Core2Duo E8500 and 4 gb of ram.
Basically it's a racist against some chipsets and ethernet adapters.
Don't have right combo of those, then ESXi will just go "WELL FUCK YOU I DON'T WANNA BE INSTALLED ON THIS SHIT"
If you check out their forums you'd see there plenty of people with those problems.
It IS primarily meant for mass produced 1U & 2U servers from well known manufacturers (Dell, HP, IBM and so on)
Not for the hobbyist to install on a PC based on ordinary home & small office grade hardware.

Yeah I know I usually work with ESXi, getting my VCP5 soon, maybe it is because I usually install them on dell Optiplexes and they have the all intel based hardware. There is always ESX 4.1 which runs a chop shopped redhat and plays a bit better with 3rd party devices.
I was actually able to install esxi on my cheap MSI motherboard and worked perfectly fine, was quite suprised
Windows Server is worse than Windows ME.

Not by a long shot, maybe 2000 server but 2003 fully SP'd and 2008 are pretty good 2008r2 is amazingly awesome
Came in here expecting Windows Millennium due to the ME in the title.
