N64 emulation sure is a clusterfuck isn't it? On a system that runs Dolphin pretty well with minimal slowdown in most games can barely run Banjo Tooie consistently and that is before we get into the various graphical issues it can have.
depending on the game it can actually be better to emulate the virtual console version through dolphin. edit: fuck
You actually get better performance running them in virtual console in dolphin than a normal n64 emulator.
Seems more of a stopgap than an actual fix though, especially with that Vulkan renderer probably coming out sometime next year and for I know the game may not even run if the stuff I've been reading about VC emulators being very personalised for the game at hand is true.
Emulation performance has less to do with the raw performance of the host or target system and more to do with the complexity of the target system's architecture.
And the n64 is very much complex. The CPU needing access RAM through the Reality coprocessor is just one example of this. It was notably difficult to program for and had poor documentation.
