KDE or bust, just be sure to make sure you nuke Akonadi from orbit. That thing will slow your system down to a crawl.
I'm trying KDE on my desktop again but I still don't like it as much as XFCE on my laptops and other desktop
I'm trying KDE on my desktop again but I still don't like it as much as XFCE on my laptops and other desktop
I'm using it right now and I consistently find it to be the best DE choice out there just in almost every respect. I've never really had it destroy GPU or anything (Except for one bug where system tray icons are animated and plasma eats resources like it's nobody business. that one's anoying), I still easily pull 9 hours+ battery on my Thinkpad with it. Usually if there's anything you don't like there's always some setting to change it too. I generally just love it, once you ditch Akonadi/Balloo/etc
It could just be that my Quadro NVS 150M is just not up to snuff with dealing with KDE. It handles Unity pretty poorly too and this is even with the proprietary driver. Nouveau and I just get TTY cause it just won't load. It's also a shame that it's OpenGL performance under Linux is utter shite but it's not at all meant for gaming. It is meant to be a entry level workstation laptop.
That's quite possible. I usually just run it under Sandy Bridge or Ivy graphics, never had a problem.
I can see how it's likable but it's just not for me.
Fair enough, can't argue that.
I'm trying KDE with Fedora right now and it is pretty attractive. It does seem to run well on 8 year old HP. But for some reason, plasma-workspace just randomly crashes. No idea why. Maybe it doesn't like my HD 6450 or I have an option enabled that I shouldn't. I had to set tearing prevention to Never in the Compositor settings because it caused the UI to glitch out like nothing else.
There is also the ThinkPads you recommended a while ago Wing.
Yeah, just keep your eye on ebay for stuff like X230's, X220's, T420's, T430's, etc (Don't get an s variant though. They're butchered.). Generally around that generation, and they'll serve you well for cheap.
I was about to put an X1 Carbon screen into my T420 before it got stolen. Would've been perfect.
I was about to put an X1 Carbon screen into my T420 before it got stolen. Would've been perfect.
I've been debating heavily about putting an XPS 12 display in my X230. But it requires soldering onto the displayport and losing that. Although apparently there's a guy selling LVDS>eDP adaptors which may be worth investigating.
KDE or bust, just be sure to make sure you nuke Akonadi from orbit.
Use CDE, you deranged freak. [editline]asdsa[/editline] Why are Vaio UX's still several hundred dollars?
Why are Vaio UX's still several hundred dollars?
Novelty factor, that's about it
Use CDE, you deranged freak.
Well at least it wont thrash the GPU...
Oh jesus christ do not buy one of those [editline]31st August 2016[/editline] The screens are abysmal, the keyboard cancerous, and they creak if you even breathe on them.

X230/X220 can get away with it by being 12.5". But only barely. That's reason enough.
I'm seeing a lot of T410s on TradeMe for around 250-280 range. May jump on one of those once I get a full time job, considering I won't get much for the Dell and the M10(maybe I'd get a little but not enough to make me go for one). Definitely selling them though.
T410's are a little dated, I'd say stick to T420 minimum.
I suppose so. First Gen I5 vs Second Gen i5 was a pretty good leap. Also this is why I'm a SteelSeries shill. https://twitter.com/SteelSeries/status/770646089439457281 Razer stop.
I'm thinking more for battery life here, honestly. Sandy and Ivy did damn well there.
Battery life isn't really that important to me though it's more about performance and not choking. I mean my Core 2 Duo in my M10 is doing just fine but I have noticed that with my workload it can choke a little.
Well, that's fair enough, it'll do there good too.
CDE looks like something out of some aesthetic meme.
that's because it is [vid]https://cdn.streamable.com/video/mp4/1h7a.mp4[/vid]

[editline]31st August 2016[/editline]
Should probably also look at new laptops if I don't go for any of the ThinkPads. iirc Dell does some okay ish Inspirons (was think of the 2 in 1s) or a SP4 i5.
The new inspirons are nice, obviously the latitudes are still really solid.
The screens look so washed out you'd think the desktop was drawn with pastels.
Yep. cheapest TNs money can buy.
You know this is the only "aesthetic meme" I've enjoyed. [editline]31st August 2016[/editline] FHD options are Win 10 pro with only 8GB of ram. :(
For new ones, yeah. I just had my mom get a new Latitude 3550(?) with an i5, 8gb RAM, and FHD. I was thinking more second hand too. Around here Ivy bridge Latitudes tend to go for cheaper than equivalent thinkpads. And Lenovo ruined the keyboard for the T430 while the E6430 still has a good one.
that's because it is <vidya>
What is that from?
What is that from?
Subete ga F ni Naru: The Perfect Insider The anime itself is not really that good, but it's pretty damn aesthetic.
Amiga posted his N9 [editline]31st August 2016[/editline] I'm waiting for Lyo and Levelog to post theirs
:v: Don't worry cipwttkt I mostly got it for a laugh It is a pretty phone though, sad that it's a deader platform than Windows Phone (ironically)
:toot: What a way to start the morning.
it's worth noting that this'll generally only affect you if you haven't changed your password since 2012 (at least as far as I know from reading about it)
that's because it is [vid]https://cdn.streamable.com/video/mp4/1h7a.mp4[/vid]
That's interpolated 60fps, right? Or if it isn't, where did you get that version?
it's worth noting that this'll generally only affect you if you haven't changed your password since 2012 (at least as far as I know from reading about it)
FUUUCK [editline]a[/editline] Oh good, only Email and Password got leaked. Was worried about my files for a second. PW luckily is a huge random one, so It's only tied to dropbox. People said I was paranoid for using a randomly generated unique password for every service. heh ;)
All you can hope is they didn't. Being a 4-year old breach that is getting attention because someone is selling it rather publicly right now.
45 Character PW with completely random letters, numbers and special characters that is hashed (Arguably with a shitty hash algorithm) and salted is unlikely going to be cracked in a reasonable time. Especially considering dictionary attacks are 100% useless against it, which seems to be the most common method. If someone manages to crack it, I'd be massively impressed.
OCD really ain't like that shit. [T]https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/71184478/ShareX/2016/08/chrome_2016-08-31_14-07-57.png[/T] :tableflip: Thanks for recommending kill disk in the last thread, does the job perfectly. (Specifically the PDF output is handy as hell for what I'm doing)
