Do not get Seagate drives. [editline]17th September 2016[/editline]
As someone looking to get an SSD soon, what is the difference between those? :v:
Nothing to really be worried about as a normal consumer. The difference between dying well after you get a new one and dying well after you've gotten 3 new ones.
I have never had any drives fail on me yet but it's really based on how much I use the and what not. I have a 2TB Seagate that I got 2 years ago and it's been doing fine, mainly because I just use it as a hard drive to store stuff and not touch it at all. The WD Caviar Black in my parents desktop may have died after like 5 years of constant use.
Do not get Seagate drives. They've been nothing but unreliable in recent years
Basically one capacity of one model of one class of drives.
Basically one capacity of one model of one class of drives.
Specifically drives pulled from externals that they asked customers to mail in for them because Costco banned them from buying more.
The ST3000DM001 was a horrible drive, no doubt, but Backblaze also made things look worse.
Specifically drives pulled from externals that they asked customers to mail in for them because Costco banned them from buying more.
Wait, that actually happened? Lol.
Wait, that actually happened? Lol.
During the flood there were massive shortages. They needed drives immediately. They bought all they could, had their employees go in and buy all they could. Then they told people they'd pay some amount extra, maybe 5-10$ per drive for people to buy all they could and send them in. Those drives at the time were Seagate Desktop Expansion drives. Inside they had ST3000DM001's.
Source on this that isn't backblaze pointing out one specific model in nonstandardized conditions?
Not quoting from Backblaze but more from personal experience. I've had a 2TB and a 4TB Barracudas failed in the recent years, and hearing about mountains of the 3TB ones failing isn't exactly comforting the case.
I've had a 1.5TB barracuda kick the bucket recently too, and it was only a few years old. Then again I once had a 640GB WD Blue die 3 months after buying it. All drive manufacturers suck. :v:
I've found that the thinner single platter seagates are much more solid than the ones with multiple platters. Still no more unreliable than other drives i've noticed.
Do not get Seagate drives. They've been nothing but unreliable in recent years
I was wondering how many pages it would take before this stupid argument got started again. [editline]17th September 2016[/editline] Barracuda is the bottom of the lineup. If you buy cheap hard drives, you really shouldn't be surprised when they fail.

The reason a lot of people don't get this is in the wide range of drives Seagate offer, they don't actually have a competitor to the WD Black. [editline]17th September 2016[/editline]
Wait, that actually happened? This was also their time of starting their gen1 rack designs, which many of the later drives (WD's and Hitachi's) were in better revisions of the racks with better vibration resistance and the Seagates were generally in the middle which was notably hotter.
My computer has been doing something weird.... from 1:00 AM to 1:02 AM. at 1:00 AM, my display gets reset and windows goes into basic color mode and windows resizing is sluggish. Two minutes later, it flashes and reverts to normal mode :worried: I'm not awake to 1:00 AM often, but it's happend the few times that I was.

WD believes in them. If I could only put in 1-2 drives in my machine, they'd be blacks. Since I can put a lot, I go for cheaper drives in RAID.
Oh, makes sense. I didn't think of that for some reason.
RAM used for cache really needs to be specially marked. And not just on some power user tool that nobody uses, either.
Everyone has been telling me to hoard up on all the 1tb Hitachi's I can hold that were made BEFORE Western Digital got involved. I can at least vouch for how bulletproof those are.
I'm on the hunt for a PowerMac G4 Cube. Drop me a profile comment if you know where to look!
RAM used for cache really needs to be specially marked. And not just on some power user tool that nobody uses, either.
Linux shows it obviously, Windows shows it (somewhat unobviously) in Task Manager as this bit but doesn't tell you what it is unless you mouse over: [t]https://helifreak.duckdns.org/image/20160918012015788.png[/t] Android shows it once you press that button at top right.
Everyone has been telling me to hoard up on all the 1tb Hitachi's I can hold that were made BEFORE Western Digital got involved. I can at least vouch for how bulletproof those are.
Literally. I once took a 45 to some Hitachi drives.
Arch Linux proved much easier to set up and much more usable than Ubuntu on the Odroid C2 :v: Couldn't get the Mali drivers to work at all in Ubuntu, and after upgrading the kernel my USB wifi adapter wouldn't work anymore. On Arch I just installed like two packages and then the Mali drivers were good to go (check the wiki tab for the packages). Hardware-accelerated Chromium is a-go. (I disabled GPU blacklist in Chromium but I don't know if that's actually necessary). Also, using the mobile youtube site dramatically reduced stuttering on YouTube. On the full site it was almost unwatchable, now it's buttery smooth. Definitely recommend switching the user agent to iPad or something. If you have or are planning to get an Odroid C2, I'd say don't even bother with the Ubuntu image. It's really not ready yet. Even past the Mali driver issues, it took a lot of time and effort to do a dist-upgrade or even a regular upgrade. I was only able to upgrade all the packages on the system by removing libreoffice-* packages (kept freezing on libreoffice-core for some reason, even if left for >24 hours) and using synaptic. And then I ran into the Mali driver issue anyway. Also, if you're having trouble with getting a video signal or graphical glitches, fiddle with the boot.ini. In particular try changing the BPP mode to 24. If you're using a passive HDMI->DVI adapter, also try a VESA mode and uncommenting "sentenv vout "dvi"" I can finally use this friggin thing. I should have trusted my gut and went with Arch from the beginning.
Literally. I once took a 45 to some Hitachi drives.
We burned through twenty or so WD IDE drives two weekends ago. Found out that they can actually stop a 9mm pretty effectively. .308 at 100 yards was a bit more fun though.

His phone's probably got the language set to Japanese. Everything else he owns is set to Japanese.

Previous year models on Enterprise drives, maybe in slightly smaller than maximum capacities, are already battle tested, and reliable. They only cost a few dollars more. That's comfortably in the "fuck it. why not?" range for me.
Sick overclockz I got annoyed at some games reporting my display refresh as 59.94Hz or similar.
Yes my go to budget body armor is just double sided tape some old multiplatters to a vest.
Hard drives are shockingly hard to completely destroy. You can render them inoperable, but wiping both completely, and quickly, is not trivial. No matter what you do you need to throw some serious horsepower at them. Industrial shredders a pretty effective for the task, but hitting them with a hammer is nowhere near sufficient. There's been a few fun defcon talks on the subject. Turns out it's pretty difficult to properly destroy hard drives in a standard rack without doing something that will damage the rest of the data center, or trigger seismic alerts.
