In an odd turn of events i cut my finger chiselling some wood for a guitar repair, now i can't feel it but it's in a splint to help the nerves regrow.

Is this a okay ssd?
I looked into backing up my NAS with single layer BD-Rs
An external 4TB drive is actually cheaper and probably has a longer shelf life...
I'm still dealing with fallout after reverting from windows 10. Java runtime is completely fucked. Doesn't run, can't uninstall old versions, can't reinstall new ones. And I need java to run programs (Weka) for my uni assignments.
But then I had the brilliant idea to run it on my archlinux server and pipe it to Cygwin/X
I agreed to help fix my aunt's computer over the phone. Her keyboard stopped working. I had installed TeamViewer on her computer last time so I went in and looked. The USB keyboard was throwing error codes in Windows and persisted between reboots so I figured the cable might be loose or something so I had to get her to unplug the keyboard and plug it back in.
What followed was a 30 minute conversation. I told her to follow the wire from the keyboard to the computer and she thought I meant the power supply cable, so she unplugged that in the middle of the teamviewer session. Up next was the monitor. She replugged the power supply so I had to explain to her that she unplugged the "screen" and she needed to plug it back in.
She then proceeded to fuck with the modem. I then had to explain that she needed to not touch that and look at the thing "that gives you the pictures." Only then did she understand. In retrospect I shouldn't have used that wording because she might have began messing with the printer.
Finally I managed to get her to plug everything back in and guided her to the USB cable using a picture of a USB cable on her browser. She reseated it and everything worked again.
Kill me.
I'm not actually sure what the USG does over an EdgeRouterX / Lite that justifies the massive price increase, from what I can see it's literally just an Edgerouter Lite that's configured through UniFi controller, meaning you'll probably need to be hosting the server on something every time you want to configure it
I'm running an Edgerouter X + AP-LR (Non-ac) for my family and it works perfectly. The UniFi firmware doesn't really do a whole lot I need, so I never run the server
[editline]21st September 2016[/editline]
Plus the ERX does POE passthrough, so you can power the router and AP off the same adapter
The interface isn't as nice and you get some cool analytics with the USG that you don't with the ERL. Also I just want every step in my damn controller page to be green.
[editline]20th September 2016[/editline]
Also the USG is only $20 more than the ERL, not really a massive difference.

I might just get modem, USG, and AC LR and call it a day though. I really don't need any more than that for a 1 bedroom 250mbps setup.
I got this neat thing today: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004NNRQVQ/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
You've seen those IDE to SATA adapters before, but this is done in a form factor to use in hotswap docks since it's the same profile as a 3.5" drive. Let's me put old IDE drives directly in my USB 3 dock to do maintenance on em. No need for those messy USB dongles.
Here is a WD204 20GB IDE drive from August 2000. Still running fine. Only 120days power on time.

Pretty neat. Also got a Quantum Fireball 7.5GB drive and a IBM Deskstar 40GB.
I did have a Quantum Fireball 2554MB drive from an old HP Vectra from 1994. but can't find it right now :(
Also TIL you can't have 2 4k monitors at 60hz hooked to a surface book.
The dock doesn't support it or something? Or you can't do the daisy chaining via DP? That's dumb.
The dock doesn't support it or something? Or you can't do the daisy chaining via DP? That's dumb.
The dock doesn't support it. Only 2x4k@30hz. It's listed as a limitation of the surface book in general by Microsoft though.

Mhmm, might be less of a limitation when and if a 2nd gen Surface Book comes out.
I'm spoiled with Amazon Cloud Drive. 60 bucks a year. Can upload and download at >100Mbps. Got 14TB on it right now.
I thought Google Drive would be usable for everything, turns out it isn't as useful as I thought it was. I have like 4TB on it but it took forever to upload and copying stuff around to different folders doesn't seem to actually work.
I need DDR3.
Anyone got a nice matched set of four 1gb 1333mhz sticks they wanna part with for a good cause? This single 4gb stick works but doesn't enable Dual Channel mode.
Made the mistake of sending the shitty uni website I'm making to a friend. He immediately responds with "if you go over a certain number of the same disc it just removes from cart?" Turns out he tried to put a few billion in and overflowed the quantity into negatives and entering anything less than 1 removes it from the cart. Silly me, assuming someone wouldn't want to buy 2.1 billion of the same CD.
I mean I knew he was good at breaking things but this is a new level of retarded.
this is a new level of retarded.
In another word, he's doing a good job at QA.
Even in real software systems, it's always uncommon cases that breaks the system and potentially poses security flaws at the same time.

Why does it have to be 4GB? Right now it would be cheaper to pick up some 2GB sticks off ebay.

Preference.
Gig sticks are cheaper and I can fill all of my slots.

Told him to do QA testing for a job:
Im genuinely aroused at the idea of breaking stuff on the internet for a living.
Technically speaking it's better to just fill the minimum for dual channel from several completely pointless perspectives.
Yeah, a lot of the deals on ebay are destroyed by shipping costs to Canada. I've searched through my hoard of ram and the best I can come up with is DDR2. I got boxes of that in ECC and non-ECC.
I do QA. Breaking things is not as amusing as it seems.

Do you have to do a lot of paper work?
Do you have to do a lot of paper work?
Of course. You have to document your findings and your testing process so the developers and managers know where the software's currently at.
The job (in my short amount of experience) is basically 70% paper work, 20% actually breaking things/running tests, and 10% waiting on devs to do their end of the work.
I sure do love when manufacturers tells me what to do with hardware I paid for.

I hope they get grilled so hard that jumping into a active lava pit seems preferable to being Microsofts bitch.
I think we should all be concerned about attempts to lock down the PC platform to that extent. It is that openness after all that has allowed to improve the capabilities of our systems.

You'd think a website with the resources of Last.fm would know better.
Another reason for me to feel smug about having a separate very complex randomized password for every service I signed up for.
People said I was paranoid back in the day, but nowadays, data leaks with 10's of millinos of leaked PW's, usernames and passwords (With shitty or nonexistent hashing more often than not) seem to be a common occurrence nowadays.
