I feel extremely anxious performing a firmware update on a phone that's lying on my desk, connected to a USB hub.
Like I should have a lockable box with a USB lead that's shielded and has thumb-screws securing the end that goes into my PC in place.
Line cards usually are worth a decent amount, that T1 card in it's gonna be worth a few hundred easily, and those serial line cards are gonna be about $100 a pop. So... for $40 that's gonna be at least a 10-fold profit.
At my job, when we test/recycle cisco equipment, we're told to generally toss the T1 cards or just keep them in the router because we have thousands of them and they only seem to sell for $20-30 if we're lucky :v:

Is "Ambient Computing" a term some random intern just pulled out of their ass?
You might as well call it "Casual Computing" to make it sound less pretentious
Don't even get me started on "Post PC"
does this mean I can sell my old core2 duo machine as """vintage"""

The word vintage has deviated to anything "old and shitty" in modern day context, so you can sell just about anything as "vintage" by throwing dirt and farting on it first
People saying "vintage" and "retro" is my fucking trigger.
NOBODY fucking uses the two words properly.

Apparently "Post-PC" means "No I/O, on anything, ever"
95% of the reason I bought an X99 Deluxe was because it had like 10 USB 3 ports -- and you know what? Best computer hardware purchase decision I've ever made

I can live without having a dialup modem in my laptop, and I think serial ports are largely useless, but it still seriously bothers me how limited the connections are becoming on laptops.
Give me a few usb ports on both sides of the laptop. Give me an ethernet port. Give me VGA and DVI/display port. Maybe HDMI. Give me at least one firewire for the 2 times I happen to want it every couple of years. Maybe start throwing on a thunderbolt because apparently people are starting to use that now for some reason. Then for wireless, have the standard wifi, bluetooth just because, and have an option for cellular because some people are actually using that now, and USB dongles, besides breaking easily, are glitchy and frequently very slow.
You can do all of this with a fairly thin profile device. I don't need to be able to shave with my laptop. Just give me something that won't fucking break, and for the love of god, stop fucking with the keyboard layouts.

There seems to be a lot more adoption of USB-C (on the consumer stuff) and Thunderbolt 3 than what Thunderbolt 2 ever had (probably because you can't just plug in and use Thunderbolt 2 devices on Windows without rebooting, meanwhile Mac OS can do it just fine hence why adoption with Thunderbolt 2 devices was way more usable with Macs. Or USB-C was previously Firewire before USB 3 came along).
I'd get something with Thunderbolt 3 because it makes that I could run an external GPU off it one way or another.
I still find it annoying that the Dell XPS 15 (a MacBook Pro competitor), MacBook Pro and many others only has 2 USB ports. Like come on, if you're going to be paying over $2000 for a laptop, you'd expect more than 2 USB ports on it.

JUST LOOK AT IT. They could have put another USB port there but nooo, they just had to put the battery indicator thing instead.
Someone sent this to me and I have to share it here

Doesn't the battery indicator thing make like 8,000x more sense on, you know
the bottom of the computer
where the battery is
Doesn't the battery indicator thing make like 8,000x more sense on, you know

Only if the battery is removable and has its own indicator (not the XPS 15)

it makes more sense where you can see it
the problem is you don't actually need it since you can just look at your screen to see the battery level

When that indicator is useful is when you are charging it with the screen closed down and you don't want to go through the effort of opening the screen. Maybe it's in your backpack while charging or something like that. Or you just want to check the battery amount without pulling the whole laptop out and opening the screen. Although it's something I'd never use anyways. I think that's why Apple got rid of it in the latest Macbooks since they had a similar battery indicator and button. Now you can just look at the power connector. If it's green, then it's like 90% or higher or something like that. If it's orange, then it's still charging. That makes it so much more useful than the battery indicator and button on the side. Speaking of the Macbook chargers, the magnetic MagSafe connector is really neat and makes charging and disconnecting so much easier compared to basically every other laptop.

I seriously do miss the flexibility of PCMCIA and Express card. I didn't need a bunch of ports on my machine. One narrow slot was all I needed to add everything you mentioned and more, including physical slots for PCI and PCI express.
what the hell is wrong with the consumer laptop market? Im helping my fiance look for a new laptop, and most of the $700-$900 options have fuckin 2.2ghz dual core i7s and 5400 rpm hard drives. One $600 laptop had a pentium. I wanna puke. I told her to look for some higber specs, but the retail monkeys at the stores keep spouting the " thats really overkill for what youll be using it for" line. Maybe if you could get decent medium spec laptops without paying for the gimmicky ultra thin touchscreen 2-in-1 features, she wouldnt have to look at a business grade laptop to escape the mediocre processors.
I almost immediately discount people who spout this "Post PC" rubbish as its a sure fire to assure me that they have no practical understanding as to why people use PCs in the first place or have realised that most people don't need much more than Core2Duo for office work.

people who discount the concept of post-pc is almost as bad as the post pc itself
go look at what people now use as their primary computing device
People just need to understand user requirements and stop trying to paint the world in one brush. Everyone's different.
Whenever I hear the term "Post-PC", I can only attribute it to Apple's advertising of the iPad Pro and how it is the ultimate PC replacement.

True. It was the protodong guy that is ridiculous though. everything he attempts to explain is pretty far off from correct and he gets so angry at everybody else calling him out.
