I attempted to create a minimilistic wallpaper to ease eye strain. As an added bonus, it was created completely using GIMP.
I've mocked up a quick Steam Installer script in perl. Can anyone using a debian based Linux Distro try it out? Thanks in advance :)
Here's the script: http://pastebin.com/m360b9dfb
Just copypaste the script into a file, save as steam-get.pl and run in terminal:
perl steam-get.pl
Better make it menu-based and automatically install fonts in the main fonts directory if you're running as root.
Yes, but after all it does look good. The composing is good, he didn't filter raep and it doesn't give you eye cancer. Okay from my POV. But birkett will have to decide.
I understand the composition is nice but the colors overall are not varied, the composition while being nice is too generic and he isn't doing anything really interesting. The generic red which is applied to the background AND the brush AND the text just makes the overall wallpaper severely lack contrast. Also the typeface is not fitting at all as we're going for a different, slightly sleeker look.
He did a good job actually making the wallpaper but the concept of the wallpaper itself is severely lacking. I could do that in 3 minutes. Literally.

Criticism coming up when I get back but it's good ;D
HubmaN, I am sorry to say this, but I actually dislike those wallpapers. They look great, but design-wise, they are severely lacking.
For example, the "Rule 30 cellular automaton" one has Fac on one side of the split and epunch on the other. By differentiating between two parts of text with color, there is an assumption that the two parts are mutually exclusive, but still related. For instance, if you fill in the right side with black, you are left with Fac. What does that mean? Why is it seperated from the rest of the text? At the very least, put Face on the left to show the division between the two parts of Facepunch, a compound word.
Also, in every wallpaper that was made, you included those patterns. I have a quick question: Why? It looks cool, no doubt about that. But, to put it simply, it is just kinda "there". Make it work for your design, not with. As a quick thought, you could create the title out of the pattern, or even the pattern out of the title.
As an aside, the artwork has to be composed of more colors than just red. A quick look at this website shows an abundance of grey and white, with red and blue to draw attention to important areas. Everything I have seen so far, including my quick creation, has a focus on red and white. It does not have to be that way!
I am only posting this because I am a firm believer in constructive criticism. It might be too much insight for such a little thing, but I don't care. The more criticism to go around, the better the product will be. Well, assuming everyone listens to it.
Don't mind me saying this, but we're focusing on red and white because we aren't actually organized left - we've, for lack of a better word, left early.
Text doesn't have to be contiguous, either - I honestly don't think anyone would care about why we're differentiating "Face" from "punch", especially when I honestly don't think anyone here would make that mistake. There isn't any reasoning behind this either; why should there be? Why add fancy swirls to Tiger's default wallpaper? There isn't any overall design, but it sure as heck is aesthetically pleasing. One shouldn't have to justify everything to be happy with it.
But we have to coordinate, bad.
For lack of a more diplomatic choice of words, I think we're all going to have to stop shitting out things before we get our stuff together.

But you're giving the name/product/whatever a bad image when you separate it as fac/epunch. It doesn't make any sense.
Also in my opinion, while you did a really good job with them, your wallpapers are kind of sharp. Add a lot more blur, since it's supposed to be a background, it can't be distracting.
Edit: I don't know, sorry to say this but I don't really like it as a background. The shapes are quite nice but there's some insane red-to-white contrast. Maybe make the geometric shapes and the background have a pretty similar color so it gives it a more interesting subtle look?

I quite like this. Although the stripes are a bit intense in the bottom right corner they look great, and you did a great job blending in the Facepunch logo.
I like the bright, sort of intentionally ambiguous style. It makes for a great wallpaper since it's pleasing and not distracting.
I only have one problem with it (well except the odd resolution): the text doesn't stand out much. It blends with the background more than it should. It's okay but you might want to add something like a reaaaally subtle stroke or a glow or something to give it a bit of contrast against the background. Don't change the text colors a lot since they're great.

Hate it all you like, but I can't fix it now either way. Nor do I want to until me and Tu154M and whoever actually decides to get on board get stuff together.
Also, saying "bad image" reminds me of the person in that thread about weed who said I was giving them a bad image by saying I didn't smoke weed.

Man I don't hate it at all. I'm just trying to help you make it better...

Right now people are just working on wallpaper and stuff so we can pick some out or just see what people's skills are.
Also what the shit man, if you can't take some criticism just stop.
I'll fix it again, then, but I'm holding off from making any more important changes. Personally, I think anything else is incredibly dull, but hey, that's why I'm keeping all of my older posts up.
Have a look at this extremely aliased (especially for the text) iteration of your wallpaper
http://imgkk.com/i/5w1iey1.png
That's kind of what I was thinking for colors. Lacking the PSD/whatever there's obviously very little I can do.
Edit: You guys are kinda missing the point, that wasn't supposed to look good. http://www.facepunch.com/showpost.php?p=14989979&postcount=323
Well, I'm just going to have to hold off doing that until the Art Team gets things together - I believe that's Tu154M's reponsibility. We're going to have to be consistent first. This project is more than a bunch of wallpapers, and most of our work is going to be held off anyway until birkett and the others get a working system up (if we can somehow find some place to create a working folder where we can build up a system in tandem). Which leads me to a question, though - are we going to each be building our own LFS system via the buildroot and somehow merging the changes together in one person's installation?
I don't expect any of my wallpapers to survive into a milestone snapshot (nor would I care anyway) - in the bigger scope of things they're completely irrelevant until we have something concrete we can work on an on-demand basis for.
Is this going to come with drivers and flash etc. pre-installed like Mandriva? Would be pretty handy.

I don't see why not, but I'd rather we didn't make any promises to ya quite yet
And a note to the team: I'll be on IRC later today.

It's hardly an odd resolution. It was the most common resolution for ages.

The stripes actually have a slight red gradient in the top left and a slight blue gradient from the bottom right. This adds contrast to the Facepunch while helping the Linux blend in more. But, the intense part might have to do with the white gradient coming from the top left, as well.
For the text, I do agree. I wasn't sure on what to do, so I just left it alone. I was considering raising the opacity of the text, but then it wouldn't really fit in that much. As for the glow, it sounds like a good idea.
Well, I'll twiddle with it and see what I can do.
I can makes skins and shit.
I'll see if I can do some wallpapers after I get Messenger/Photoshop working again.
Here is the new wallpaper, with 50% more sexiness. I strived for 51%, but there were budget cuts. You have to make sacrifices sometimes:

I vote for this.
Was your budget really that low that you couldn't add some space between Facepunch and Linux and the right side?
Otherwise, pretty nice, but for some reason the text has an jpg-artifacty look on it.

Looks blurry and the text is running off the screen...
We will vote about the branding at soon. Now stop spamming the thread with wallpapers, this is the hardware section and not the creation corner.
