Looks like i completely buggered that up. Forgot to crop the layers and it was 640x640 and not 640x480. Here's a png of it finished properly. Gimp can't save as xpm so you'll have to do it, sorry :sax:

Filter rape the facepunch logo and put the text "Lin-punch" under it?
Then not even getting the format he requested.
Jesus christ, at least show some effort if you want to do this so bad :ughh:

Denzo y u no read?

So it's a little filtered, the reason i can't save to xpm is because gimp fails to do so.

Then make it not fail.
Yeah, Gimp can do it. It's the most commonly used paint application in the Linux community.
We haven't even agreed on a goddamn name and logo yet. Just put the facepunch logo or so there.

How about something simple?
[editline]05:37PM[/editline]
I can use a better font, and transparency if you like.
You guys all fail at graphic design.
You first analyse the purpose. In this case - a boot image.
A boot environment. I dont want greeting with a bright white screen that flashes quickly back to black before and after POST. Keep the colours dark, preferably black / dark grey in the background. Subtle colour change for the logo - blend it in. If the logo is distracting me from the actual boot menu - we have a problem. The menu text is white / light grey. Nothing fancy.
The boot splash can be a bit more garish - but again, try to not damage my eyes. I don't want users beeing greeted with flashing black / white / black / white during the boot process.
Having said all of that - has anyone here actually got some kind of art qualification? Im thinking im better on my bloody own by the state of some of this. C'mon - you can do better.
One thing i might add:
DO NOT USE ANY KIND OF NAME OR LOGO EXCEPT THE ORIGINAL FACEPUNCH IN IT.
We haven't decided on a common CD yet, because you guys don't even seem to be interested in doing so. Don't use anything that might be a branding. Don't just create a name and state it as fact ("lin-punch", "facepunch linux") when we haven't even sorted that out because everyone just keeps on posting his fancy logos and wallpapers without any fucking point. Do it neutral and FP-like.
Incase you didn't get it yet: I'm Tu154M, my main got banned.
Whoa, dudes, that was an idea that I just posted. It wasn't even specifically for the boot image, it was just a general idea for the logo and name.
[editline]07:29PM[/editline]
Transparent so you can all have a go :):

And my quick thing I made for it to be easier on the eyes:

"I like them so you don't have to!"
So, what's new about that, except for the fancy shadow?
I'm not planning on doing art, so you don't have to whine about it, it's just an idea.
I'm not planning on doing art, so you don't have to whine about it, it's just an idea.
I'm just asking where your idea even is? It is the Facepunch logo with a nice drop shadow....And that's all....Is there any deeper meaning behind that?
Are we gonna go on for another 10 pages posting wallpapers and fancy filter raep logos or are we finally gonna start working together instead of separated? I made you guys an offer pages ago but you just keep on ignoring it and go on with your own shit instead of trying to find a compromize. This is not a fucking showcase where everyone should try to impress birkett the most. We are trying to organize an OS here, our task being graphics and art. I'm supposed to organize this section. But that won't work when you keep going on like that.
I'm not saying you can't put your own ideas into this. But ffs, contribute to the project, check out what others have done and make sure what others think of your work. This is supposed to be a kind of democratic process and doesn't work like it's supposed to be just yet. You're throwing the FP logo with added drop shadow in the thread.....so? How is this helping the team? We had like 10 pages of 'just throwing this out there' already and everyone has shown off what he does best, now it's time to find a compromize and not start all that jazz all over again. Gosh.
Derp_alt, feedback please?

Stop shitting on it, yours is exactly the same with the addition of a bit of text
You guys are arguing about working together and compromises, so can i get some fucking feedback. Pricks.
Well, what is that supposed to be? The splashscreen i guess?
The size ain't right so far but that can be fixed later. It has a weird kind of gradient which looks very choppy. Since you can't have full RGB on a splashscreen (I'd guess so) it would look very messed up. I'd suggest just making it plain gray and remove those weird dots at the bottom and top. Gray is a neutral color and won't be too out of place if we finally get a CD going. The general direction of just having an FP logo appear is probably best though.

Well what exactly are you talking about now? The wallpaper and logo? That was my initial work which got me into the team. The other thing is just a sheme which you will pretty easy recognize if you would read the text around it.

Yeah you're right, but you still don't get my point. I meant "Is this what it should roughly look like?".

Well i thought that it would look plain and boring with just grey. The dots i'm aware of and the size doesn't matter as it's just a preview. I could make it a bit more subtle with just a little bit of purple in the gradient. With XPM you can have up to 14 colours as well so it's not really restricted to just 2.

Ah okay. My bad, soz.
I guess that this is what it should look like but everything will be fine as long as you keep in mind the general rules of a splashscreen and keep it neutral.

I'm not too sure whether 14 colors can make a good gradient, we'll just have to see i guess.

Hey guys, remember that you need to make it a .xpm with only 14 colors for Grub to accept it. I followed a tutorial for Gimp to convert the image above.

QFT.
Heres the deal. Tu154, / Derp_Alt is the art team leader. Theres a reason for this. Decent leadership skills, art skills and a pretty good idea about where things should be heading. As much as i know it isnt nice being bitched at - hees right.
I thought that throwing out the opertunity to create a simple grub splash / boot image would bring things back to life - and get some community progress kicked off. Obviously not.
You know what we want / need - i've given you the guidlines. Tu154 knows whats needed. Work together.
I know its pretty boring waiting around for me to get off my arse and release something - so in the mean time, make yourselfs useful. It doesn't have to be perfect for now - but theres no way i or tu are going to be letting 5 min 'shop jobs upstream.
If you guys want this to look like everything else FP makes as a community - or fail all together. Carry on. Its a massive load off my back.
Now, lets get working as a team and make something decent.
Bionic Apple - Much better, now we're getting somewhere. If we can tame down the logo a bit, and merge it in, that will be great. That's the general layout I was hoping for. Small (ish) logo, no branding, dark background. Nothing too fancy, but enough to brighten up an otherwise bland boot menu.

Very nice work indeed! I've got nothing to criticize, although you might tone down the saturation a bit but that's not too important.
Thanks, although I am going to have to make the .xpm look better.
Also, it would be a big help if somebody could post the logo with a transparent background, no shadows, and no white background. Also, make it as large as possible or just make an .svg.
Once that is posted, it will make it easy to do a lot more with it. Unfortunately, I am unexperienced with Inkscape or Illustrator, so any .svg I could make would look terrible.
It actually looks pretty damn good. Just a bit of a logo issue:
