Gentoo is used for the build environment. The distro is debian based.
Does the loading screen have to have a black background?
Does the loading screen have to have a black background?
Unless you want to have your eyes raped when it flashes on and off the screen, yeah.
Evacuate the internets, something just went terribly wrong

Still.
We're struggling with a branding here and you just go ahead and make a logo. Exactly what we should avoid as i wrote a page ago.
Posted it up temporarilly.
I did it because I was bored and I had nothing to do. Besides, I like doing shit like that.
Yeah I assume you have the original with the layers since you changed the name? So you could easily change it later when we think of a name.
Unless you want to have your eyes raped when it flashes on and off the screen, yeah.
Psh, just do KMS. :science:

Of course, but I don't have it in .PSD format. I have it in .FLA format, but that still keeps the layers intact and everything.

Debian actually calls it "Debian GNU/Linux"
Debian actually calls it "Debian GNU/Linux"
Funny because the FSF (aka Stallman) doesn't want to call Debian a "free" distribution because you _can_ put non free software on it. :downs:
Thank god Stallman is a joke now so we don't have to worry about that :)
"oh noes! OPLPC [sic] runs Windows I'll use some obscure MIPS-based chinese shitbox!!!!!! I also don't have time to learn anything other than C and Lisp because I'm too busy telling everyone how I orgiginally llearnt thme!!!"
Down with Thatcher!
Sorry - Stallman.
Plans for this weekend - start re-baking a debian install image. Ill be starting off with the standard install disk (600mb one) for x86 only. In the comming weeks, and before the next release ill be working on x86_64 and possibly an unsupported PPC image.
Anything major that you think REALLY REALLY MUST be included in this first release, let me know. My plan is, for this first release to be not much more than a stock debian 5 install, with a few extras here and there.
I've taken the route of using the debian repos for installing the base system, then we can provide our own customised packages. For example, facepunch-art and facepunch-lsb. From just those two packages alone, we can customise the entire system.
I've also get to work on having the framebuffer enabled by default on the virtual consoles, which gives us a sexy 24bit 1024x768 res instead of the crap 80x26 vt. Through the wonders of uSplash, we can brighten this up even further. Eventually, I want use to have a user contributed script that will allow customisation of both of these options.
Kernel packages have come alone leaps and bounds since the last time I updated. We will be using vanilla 2.6.30 for the first release. I have a set of patches made up that I want to either submit to the kernel team, or include in our own kernels. Details on that later on.
No solid release dat yet - "When its ready, and i'm happy". After the last time I tried setting dates in stone, I'm not trying it again =]
All I'm willing to say at the moment is, we are pretty close to having something out there now. Then you can all set to work making us some apps, art, everything really.
Secondary objective for this weekend is document the build process up to now. I said in the OP i want development to be very open. Up to now that hasnt been possible. So im going to throw up a document describing exactly what ive been doing, why and how. Let the learning begin.
Questions, comments, complaints, suggestions?

What if it came with Conky with some sort of predefined Facepunch theme?

Will you be using uvesafb for the framebuffer? It would be the most platform independent way wouldn't it?

You're way too far already.

Indeed we are.
I really really really want to see about getting font smoothing on the consoles at some point :D
Just out of interest, anyone interested in having a slightly prettier SSH connection? Directory listing colours for example. If it's not something anyone is interested in, ill move on and put it on the long term todo list.
