I'd love to do some desktop backgrounds. Mainly thinking about some nice photographs with our logo and wordmark on. I'll check my archives and/or take some new.
That Python thing sounds cool. Also, I think it'd be better to have the default programs to be voted on as everyone has different opinions on what they like to use best (eg. Empathy/Pidgin). I'll do my best make a website draft. Just need to know. Sub-domain name? Navigation sidebar or topbar? And also the chosen logo when you decide. :chef:

Not too fussed, I like the idea of sidebars, but topbars make me jizz buckets when they are used properly. Logo should "finalise itself" after people get posting drafts. Assigned the first two tasks.
fp-linux it is. Right Kinda Topbar? Y/N
I registered http://fp-linux.de/ ages ago. [editline]10:57PM[/editline] I think....wait
O, has the task of making a website been taken? I'd love to make a template. and how about facepunchdistro.com? its available. and do we want to stick with the theme of facepunch? I figured we could come up with something better. O and no one enter a domain name we might want into a form to check if it is available. some sites have been known to buy the domain as soon as you search it so then you have to buy it from them.
It's http://fplinux.de cause it got it free. [editline]10:58PM[/editline] Broke my automerge [editline]10:59PM[/editline]
O, has the task of making a website been taken? 24 pages? tl(not gonna)r. haha.
Well Tu154M, that sure beats my sub-domain. You Germans have a scary amount of '.de's registered. 2nd most registered ccTLD in fact. :eng101:
24 pages? tl(not gonna)r. haha.
Its stated 6 posts above your first (on this page)... and in the OP. Also, domains arn't important right now. fp-linux.de is great, we also have fplinux.facepunch.info curtosy of Cosmic Duck. Ibutsu - kind of it. Think sf.net style top nav.
I think a bash script would be easier to create to install Wine and Steam. I think I can do that next week.
I think a bash script would be easier to create to install Wine and Steam. I think I can do that next week.
It was discussed. Features should include a GTK front end, settings dialog and progress indicators (for download / install progress)
It was discussed. Features should include a GTK front end, settings dialog and progress indicators (for download / install progress)
Oh. I haven't worked with GTK and Python before
I think I'll try taking a crack at that Python script. So it just basically installs Steam through wine?
I'm interested in linux. I want to do this challenge, i thought I might as well use the facepunch distribution. http://www.overclock.net/operating-systems/273216-never-been-convinced-linux-here-challenge.html [editline]01:00AM[/editline] should I? or is this a bit too complicated for a "newbie"
I'll take a look at the installer artwork. Speaking of which, is there a package for that? I was looking through the package list for Debian, but couldn't find an installer artwork one. For now, I am simply downloading the installer disk image and going to sift through that.
24 pages? tl(not gonna)r. haha.
You should probably try to get this guy to do some artwork. I've seen his stuff, and it's all pretty good.
Glad to hear that the distro is on its way. Good work guys! I love you all! :buddy:
I am going to download this ASAP when it's out. Gnome or KDE?
I am going to download this ASAP when it's out. Gnome or KDE?
Probably Gnome, if it uses a DE. I say Openbox or something like that is more likely.
Openbox gets my vote
I think I'll try taking a crack at that Python script. So it just basically installs Steam through wine?
Indeed. Bare in mind that it will need a pretty GTK front end to keep it all newbie friendly. I was thinking about something that would allow advanced users to change the install location through the settings? Go crazy on it, its now your sub project. After you get your feet in the ground with that, FP Linx will be pretty familiar, as will Debian (which they are both forked from).
I'll take a look at the installer artwork. Speaking of which, is there a package for that? I had to extract the initrd.gz from the disk, then extract the cpio image that contained. Dig deep enough, and everything is there.
I am going to download this ASAP when it's out. Gnome or KDE?
No DE installed by default. However, the user will be able to select and DE of his / her liking within the installer. Debian reps already have Gnome, KDE, blackbox, openbox, Joes - all of the rest ;-)
You should probably try to get this guy to do some artwork. I've seen his stuff, and it's all pretty good.
We don't need some prick that just walks in and goes like "hey do this and do that" and doesn't even bother reading at least the few recent posts. No, really.

No, really.
I'm not going to argue against him being a prick. You're 100% correct there. But he's damn good at artwork. You should at least consider using some of his work, that is if he submits any.
We don't need some prick that just walks in and goes like "hey do this and do that" and doesn't even bother reading at least the few recent posts. No, really.
My apologies. I'll just shutup, and read the thread before posting again.
I was wondering how it would work and be "user friendly" since it'd have to use SteamInstall.msi... Which would have meant it would need a second window for the real Steam Installer. But I found a way to extract files from the msi file.
cabextract SteamInstall.msi
And then there is a SteamService.exe, and then you run:
wine SteamService.exe /install
And it dumps everything needed to run Steam in ~/.wine/drive_c/Program Files/Steam Then you run Steam.exe and it autoupdates and then you log in. So the base install of the distro should come with cabextract. It doesn't come with wine in Gentoo, and it probably doesn't in Debian either. Installing Steam from CLI is awesome.

Users will have installed steam before.
Once it's finished downloading, do something like - "Click continue to begin the installation", then give the windows installer focus, and minimise our bootstrapper. Users will have installed steam before.
Oh, I wasn't originally planning on using the Windows installer. That's why I was extracting the .msi. Since I have access to the files inside the .msi I could probably reverse engineer the entire installer. It'd probably look nicer in Gtk than in Wine motif or whatever. :v: I don't think it'd be that difficult because just running the SteamService.exe puts the .desktop launcher on the desktop. I'd probably delete the .lnk file programatically because AFAIK it doesn't actually do anything.
Go crazy with it. If it works and works well, I'm happy. Though I think you're going it the long way ;-)
Basic Template Not much, but its all I can think of without direction into what else we need. Trying to get the Version bit to align to the right, but I can't seem to get it to do so without taking a new line. Any tips on how to fix it are most appreciated. If anyone can make a better matching favicon, send it to me/post here and I'll change it. [editline]10:07PM[/editline] Nm, fixed it thanks to my co-worker. :buddy:
