sounds good, But what choices do we get at desktop enviroments?
Shipping the distro with KDE would, in my eyes be overkill. I'd say that if we wanted to make the most lightweight gamer server distro (With graphics) *box or a tilling window manager would be the preffered WMs. Personally I would make the server run Fluxbox. It's very simple and is probably the least resource depending stacked WM.
If we are going to have a full featured gaming DE, then I would recommend Xfce, with Xgl as an option.
Also, if we are going to make a LiveCD/DVD well need to decide what project we're going to fork. What distro provides the most basic and friendly interface (both user and dev), while also having a big userbase that can help us in the development? I'd say Mint.
Mint has an amazing interface and package manager.
Any Debian based distro or just Debian would be best, aptitude is great.
Might aswell just make an online installer
Any packages selected are donloaded on the fly. I'm looking at borrowing the Debian repos, then rolling my own pak-man. Something like ipkg.
And if i see the word gaming one more time, I'm going to scream.

Actually go for Openbox. I'm pretty sure it's less bloated.
I say we don't offer any desktop environments, since gui's are for the lazy and decrease productivity.
jk
I like the option of different choices in the installer.

But why? I'm one of the many people who yearn for the day they can play a bunch of their games comfortably on Linux, so they don't have to boot into Windows just to game. WINE's come a long way, but even Steam + Source has its issues, and they're meant to work flawlessly in WINE. I'm venturing into the world of C, C++ etc., I'd love to find some ways to patch WINE to work with Steam/Source better (get the in-game overlay working, for one thing). After testing it using the FP Linux user base I could push the patches upstream to WineHQ.
Considering you're calling it the Facepunch distro, and the majority of Facepunchers (at least, the new ones) join through GMod... most of the target audience are gamers, still. It's inevitable we're going to go on about games :P
I had a more reasonable idea the other day, too: allowing the users to easily switch between ALSA and OSSv4. Replacing one with the other can be a nightmare on even the most friendliest of distros, because no-one's written any scripts to do it easily. I wish they would. A simple script during install which detects what soundcards you have and whether they'd function better using ALSA or OSS4, that sorta' thing.

Again, is this OS meant for servers or gamers? (Pretty sure it's only the former)

Neither? It's for personal use. But Linux is not for gaming. As birkett's title states :D

just because it's not meant for gaming, doesn't mean it's not possible :v:
It should look kick-ass too. I'm tired of all the plain grey on lighter grey color schemes. We have some fantastic artists here, I'm sure we could make icons and other stuff like that.

problem is, making it look kick-ass takes alot of system resources. and if it's gonna be used for server hosting, all you want is a minimal GUI.
but then again, it could be made a option in the installer, if you want "bling bling" or "simple shit that works"
Idea looks good on paper.
Should I set up an IRC channel?
Why do you need to ask? It take's like 5 mins. #fpnix on irc.gamesurge.net
i can get hosting if someone can get a domain. vladh, would probably be very good at the php stuff, sooo...
Trashed my old Facepunch subdomain and made this:
Should I set up an IRC channel?
Do it. Post links.
No.
IRC is going to be hosted on Freenode, should be a registered chan up at #fplinux later today.
I'm really not fussed for gearing this up for gaming and nothing else. Sure, we can package in WINE, and a few helper apps, but it's still going to have the problems that every other distro has with games. If people want to do that, start submitting patches to the WINE devs, then get back to me.
Server support is on my hit list. It's pretty much already there, just add in a few deamons to the rootfs, no X server as default.
I REALLY need a few more experienced guys with building and porting. Specifically kernel init scripts and initramfs building.
Edit:
IRC is up at irc://irc.freenode.net/fplinux
We have to make fun of the banning here on FacePunch.
Like...
When you empty your recycle bin it shoud say:
"Do you want to permaban your Trash?"

Rofl! I actually quite like that ;-)

Epic shit right there

then do it :v:

Because we have a recycle bin in a server distro.
Because we have a recycle bin in a server distro.
It's not JUST a server distro. And it never will be.
Server distro = desktop distro - X server + services.
Because we have a recycle bin in a server distro.
remember, noobs can't find out how to use the console, so a lightweight DE is optional, but included.
Hmm...
Deleting files: "Do you want to ban this file" (Going on the fact that if you trashed a file, you can restore it - just like users can be unbanned.
Emptying recycle bin: "Do you want to Permaban all the files?" (Going on that an emptied recycle bin = you can't restore files - also like being permabanned on FP (except Garry's birthday)).
We need MORE funny text or System Modules!!!
Because we have a recycle bin in a server distro.
Because we have a DE in a server system.
VFS: Could not mount root file system. Face palm?
Trying to get FUSE to work or something?
