I don't understand why you guys need Jailbreaking so much. I've been using a non-broken phone for a year and it's great.

Well, for the latest OS, it's almost going to be worth it to get the features if Apple don't allow your iDevice to run it normally.
I've got a 3rd gen iPod Touch, and just because Apple say so, I can't have custom homescreen backgrounds or multitasking, yet when jailbroken, it runs both of those completely fine. Why should I, or others have to suffer just because they want us to upgrade our hardware?

Um, those features are enabled on the 3rd gen, the hardware is the same as the iphone 3GS. So if you don't have those features you don't have a 3rd gen. Plus, you can't expect them to support old hardware with every new feature they bring out. From what I've heard the multitasking is too slow to use on the 2nd gen.

Sorry, I meant 3rd Gen 8GB. Forgot the 8GB.
I'm not expecting them to support old hardware that is actually old (See: 1st Gen), but for other devices that aren't even a year old yet, they should be able to. As I said, Jailbroken devices can do it quite happily in most cases often with no increased battery drain at all. So why not enable it?

how do i get that funky water background they have in all the pictures of the OS? I upgraded my ipod to v4 but the background is still plain black- everything is updated and working though
Just go to settings -> wallpaper, and it is one of the options.

I apologize for my absence. The version of Redsn0w I posted only reads the GM firmware, which is why you all are hitting the .ipsw not being recognized issue. Try the version posted by DrKinkyKinkles.

It backs up application data and contacts, not music. Resync your apps then restore the backup.
