my uni is on windows 7 and office 2012, all current up here.
4S is just barely hanging in there, its still a pretty good phone.
Do you think it would be usable for another year or so until my renewal comes up? For $100 I don't see very many other phones that are as good and will have decent support.
my primary school even got off windows xp ffs

4S will still be usable for at least a year
I'm sure the POS machines at a clothes shop near me still run XP
I heard the oh-so-familiar error noise when they did something wrong
My school was on 7 a couple months after release, XP is 10 years old, compatibility issues are going to arise very very soon.
12 going on 13 years actually. I think we aren't going to see actual compatibility problems for a long time though. After all, a nice chunk of software and web browsers still supported 2000 up until a couple years ago. MS is stopping support, but developers are largely in charge of how long it takes for the OS to become functionally obsolete.

Atm machines can run older versions of Windows, like ME or 2000.
I can see why those systems and various other places still use xp or older versions, it's because it just works. It would take time to test the programs on newer operating systems and it would also require upgrading the hardware too. You wouldn't want medical equipment lagging or causing errors during a surgery. Almost a decade of use should fix pretty much everything, upgrading to a newer os probably wouldn't provide any new features.
If it's not broken, don't fix it.

A fair amount of POS machines run XP Embedded since you don't really need much for a glorified cash register.
Though, I'm surprised more POS companies and retailers don't look into Linux. Could develop your own POS oriented UI and run on ARM so the hardware doesn't have to be more complex or expensive than a RaspPi. Probably cheaper than licensing Windows as well.
atm machines usually run embedded xp, rarely older
some places are moving to unix/linux based systems too. XP isn't going to be here forever and that's evident

As long as they aren't public internet facing, there's not a whole lot wrong with that thinking. Primary concern with old OS's is security, especially old Windows OS's.

I'm still using 4S. It still runs like new, even on iOS 7. I don't think iOS 8 will support it, though, so you may want to take that into consideration.

iOS 8 probably will, 4 still supports iOS7.
Just got a 13" MBP Retina, lovin the build quality and screen.
Anyone know some games that run well (50+ fps)? Graphics really don't matter. So far I've been sticking to Hearthstone and Starcraft 2, which I'm surprised runs so well.
TF2 and CS:GO don't run well enough to my liking to play.

Yes it will, Apple still sells a bunch of A5 devices.

Killing Floor, Arkham City, Civ V all run quite well for me.
i haven't had time to play much else demanding games

Apple's proven in the past they're completely willing to distribute features or entire OSes only to certain devices, regardless of actual hardware. (I'm still upset over HDR photos only being enabled on the iPhones until recently, even though it was entirely software.)
That said, I'm pretty sure you're right here. iOS 8 is EoL for the 4, 9 is more likely EoL for the 4S.

Um, Apple has no such track record for distributing OSes to their mobile devices. The only exception I can think of is how iOS 6 wasn't pushed to the third gen iPod Touch but it was to the 3GS. However, that doesn't really go contrary to what I stated which is that they update devices they actually sell, the hardware is irrelevant. Sometimes that's not a good thing either when the device they sell is crazy slow like the iPhone 4.

Doesn't that have a dedicated graphics card?
Doesn't that have a dedicated graphics card?
no, just very good integrated graphics
got a Mac Mini for christmas. I put 8gb ram in there a few days ago, it's so fast, and it can even game.

I'm still on iPhone 4 with iOS7, haven't had any problems, phone runs smooth.
Should run even smoother with 7.1
Happy 2013S, everyone!
Woah, so I charged my 3GS this morning, and about 5 minutes ago I see it turning off.
It wasn't touched throughout the whole day and the entire thing just fucking drains like that, what the fuck is going on? I haven't installed any new apps or tweaks from Cydia so this is just out of nowhere.
Has this kind of thing happened to anyone else before? I have no words for this.

Old batteries, man.

batteries tend to do that over time
Does it usually happen just one day or is it a gradual decline? Because this is the former.

It started happening to my 4th Gen iPod a few months ago - stays on for about 30 seconds then just turns off.

I found out there's a place in my local town that'll replace it for me for £30, and it'll only take an hour. I guess I'll just do that, the kit to do it from iFixit is 25 anyway.
If you jailbreak your iPad 2/3 you can add a repo that has a tweak meant for the iPhone 4 but what it does works on those as well. It enables the gaussian blur in control centre, notification centre, and just in apps in general where it only has transparency. The performance hit is there but I think it's worth it because the non blurred control centre just looks awful. It's called Parallax EnaBlur and you'll find whatever repo you need just in google. When I had my iPad 3 I always hoped there would be a tweak to enable that since I liked how it looked, maybe someone here will enjoy having it on their older iPad too.
There's also apparently a way to get Airdrop working but it's killer to battery life on devices without Bluetooth 4.0 if you have it enabled persistently(it's left out for a reason).
