I'm feeling very saddened right now. I bought an iPhone 4s off of eBay. I saw in the photos that it was running 7.0.4. Jackpot, I thought! A jailbreakable iPhone that isn't having the price be artificially inflated simply because it is jailbreakable!
The phone shows up, it's indeed on 7.0.4. I put my SIM into it, started getting everything ready, and I downloaded evasi0n and tried to jailbreak it.
It worked, and then the phone rebooted. It got stuck at the Apple logo forever (I tried multiple force shutdowns to reboot it and it was definitely bricked) so I had to DFU restore it to 7.1.1.
I really hate how Apple locks down iOS installations to the newest version. It's total bullshit.
I have an iPod touch 5g that I can use for jailbreak things, I suppose. Still kind of a bummer.
I'm thinking of buying a macbook pro (middle tier retina), but I'm not sure about applecare/insurance.
Should I buy applecare, insurance, or both?
I'm intending to use this laptop for at least 5 years (my previous windows laptop lasted me 7).
Also does applecare guarantee replacements from general wear and tear? ie can I get the battery/hard disk replaced after a couple of years even if it hasn't broken completely?

What do you mean by insurance? Apple only offers Applecare and that's what I'd buy if I wanted warranty extension (although it's not worth it on the 13" model IMO). It'll cover any failure but it won't cover diminished battery capacity. Any damage insurance through a third party is just asking for trouble when you actually need to get service.

I mean general gadget insurance; ie theft, damage, etc. As applecare does not cover this, and the applecare would be to cover failure, but I can't decide if its really worth it or not.
The only disadvantages to using a Mac are the price and the fact that you can't really upgrade them (except for memory). To me this isn't a big deal because I'm rich as fuck—so I'm more likely to just buy the latest model instead of trying to get 10fps extra in BF4 by upgrading the graphics card.
I've been debating between either replacing my desktop for the most part with a maxed out 15" rMBP when the new ones launch, or getting a 13" and still using the desktop for more intensive stuff. I'm honestly tired of some of the hassle my desktop gives me and I'm leaning toward just going with a rMBP for everything. I don't play games any more anyway and that's what my desktop has always been built to do. I do wish I was "rich as fuck" and could just keep buying new macs though.
literally my exact mindset right now. selling my desktop and 13" rMBP and buying a maxed out 15" and a large reference monitor/some other peripherals
not that my 13" is bad, if anything it's more powerful than my desktop in every department but GPU (and not by a whole ton, rather surprisingly)

Yeah I'm thinking of pairing it with a Dell UP2414Q since OS X has amazing 4K scaling as of the 10.9.3 beta. I would get the 32" but it's 3-5x more expensive depending on sales and the benefit of it being a true 10bit panel instead of 8bit + AFRC is lost on me because I don't have a full 10bit + AdobeRGB workflow.
I don't even need reference monitors, I'm just sick and tired of shitty Windows machines.
i would laugh at myself if i read these posts from 3 years in the past, but i can't say i would regret selling my desktop now. having the ability to pick up an external drive and my laptop and have my whole workstation along with me somewhere is frankly a life saver sometimes
my desktop is a loud, noisy aging brick that doesn't do much better than my laptop that i had to put no effort over time kneeling over fixing and rebuilding every once in a while. wouldn't miss it one bit; i can understand why so many people would prefer building and putting effort in to a functional desktop, but i just prefer portability and ease of use these days

My main problem is I don't need a whole lot out of a laptop. Seriously, I'm still chugging away on this Gateway Core 2 Duo after 8 years. It does pretty much everything I need out of it (run VMs, do homework, browse internets, play HD video). Don't get me wrong, my school issues 13" MBP is much much faster and has twice the RAM (and has HDMI support as opposed to S-video). It just feels, overkill for my needs. Also its not mine, and I have to return it tomorrow. :v:
I'm still old fashioned in the sense where all the power and such is done on a bulky black box under your desk, with large, multiple monitors.
I'm at a point in my life where I spend more time out of the house than inside. It'd be nice to carry everything around in a situation like this.
What do you guys use to clean the screen on your computer? Everything leaves streaks on my MBP screen.

Isn't there a black cleaning cloth that comes with all Macs? Or is it only for iMacs...?
Anyways I use that to clean my screens.
There a 7.1.1 jailbreak yet?

I'm fairly sure all of them do. Unfortunately, the cloth usually isn't usually sufficient for me as it tends to just smear.

dude if it's not antiglare, use windex on a microfiber cloth. works like a charm

Fair enough, it is glass. :v:

My MacBook didn't come with one... Am I missing out?
latest retina mbps certainly do
My MacBook didn't come with one... Am I missing out?
I think they do if they are glass. Mine was a non-retina 13" glass one. I don't think the matte ones do, but I never asked about my sister's 15" 2012 MBP.
Would the Air be considered glass then? Its odd because this is the first I have ever heard of the MacBooks coming with this magical cloth.

wont windex ruin the oleophobic coating on the glass?
wont windex ruin the oleophobic coating on the glass?
do the laptops even have oleophobic coating
I think Windex with ammonia is the bad stuff for the oleophobic coating, and only if you slather it on in exorbitant amounts.
wont windex ruin the oleophobic coating on the glass?
you can also just use water which is what apple recommends...
A completely dry cloth works fine for the most part for me, but if it isn't doing the job I damp it a little. My screen hardly ever gets oily because I just don't touch it and everyone around me knows not to actually make contact when pointing at something.

Also I didn't get a cloth with my rMBP 13" :(
