not really a good idea to buy things before wwdc
not really a good idea to buy things before wwdc
Especially since WWDC is just over 2 weeks away. Unless you absolutely need it right now, I strongly advise you to wait.
It's not like they're going to reveal brand new rMBP laptops at WWDC, and the MBA just got refreshed. Apple is probably going to reveal in October as usual and possibly even later if they want to wait for Broadwell.
Is Hackintosh talk allowed in here?
Is Hackintosh talk allowed in here?
I don't see why not as long as nobody starts posting any warez which is what I think would be the only issue. Considering OS X 10.9 is free now even that's not a huge concern.
Out of curiosity, how would this fare at attempting one?
Might work but I'm not sure if the GPU is supported out of the box.
Might work but I'm not sure if the GPU is supported out of the box.
I take it I'll need something like this? What would be the best method of hackintoshing that? And is it possible to dual boot it?

You can dual boot OS X.
not really a good idea to buy things before wwdc
i have a feeling apple probably won't be talking about rMBP hardware, they don't have much reason to update it until october when the big updates usually roll out [editline]14th May 2014[/editline] LinusTechTips did a pretty neat video walkthrough on doing a mavericks hackintosh, though it was with a nvidia GPU i think they do mention AMD along the line

Okay, currently installing Mavericks on one of my hard drives to test it, fingers crossed. If it works, I'm just going to run OSX on my desktop and Bootcamp Windows on it.
it appears I'm misinformed a little bit. looking at the 2014 airs specs, they match up to the 2013 retina pro pretty well.. so I guess it's just a decision coming down to deciding between displays?
Pretty much. The retina has better graphics (Intel Iris vs HD5000) but thats mainly to support the display resolution. I own a 13" 2013 Air and the display is really my only knock against it but it is still perfectly adequate. Works perfectly for just about everything I do, including some light gaming.
Does anyone else like the design of the original ipad over any other tablet, including newer ipads? i dunno what it is but it just looks so, comfy, compared to other ipad models
i'm certainly not a fan of the scratches they so easily obtained
original ipad was rad then ios 4 ruined everything
The first iPad is the only one I'd owned. It was a heavy jerk, but I loved it until iOS updates made it near unusable. I can't say I noticed how it felt in my hands(other than the weight) but I guess that was the point. I do wonder if there'll ever be a trend back to thicker devices, but they'll still be light as a feather. And Ehzik did you mean iOS 5? Because I'd agree with you there.
nah i hated ios 4 too ios 3 is where it's at especially with backgrounder+swapfile hack
Anyone using latest gen Retina macbook pros? I'm sort of considering a 13" retina 8GB/256GB but when I used a retina in uni over a year ago it didn't feel very responsive, as the internals couldn't comfortably push the res. Is that still the case with Iris?
nope. iris is more than powerful enough to push the 2560x1600 resolution of the latest gen rMBP [editline]15th May 2014[/editline] and then some. i have mine set up to run a 2560x1080 display on top of that without any hiccups
I liked the first iPad reminded me of the second + third iPod touches with the metal bezel
safari is so...smooth but it has barely any plugin/scripting support :/

Is that still the case with Iris?
Actually I should take this opportunity to take back what I said in the past. I just had a source run Quartz Debug on his 13" 2012 rMBP with the HD 4000 and on Mavericks even it is really good performance wise. Safari on Facebook (which is a huge benchmark because it's terrible code) scrolled consistently between 50 and 60fps on it. According to him most of the performance boosts for retina displays actually come from Mavericks. Apple has been continually moving more rendering over to the GPU and just optimising performance in general. The iris is substantially better than the HD 4000 so you have nothing to fear.
how good is safari these days, does it have addons? i made a hackintosh but i use chrome right now and i would prefer to not use chrome
it's really nice with a trackpad, slow in some aspects though. addon support is very small [editline]15th May 2014[/editline] it's a shame, because i don't particularly like chrome and FF isn't really all that great on OS X (huge memory hog, buggy with flash)
well tbh all i need is adblock and reddit enhancement suit
I've found Safari to crash, and sometimes hang the whole system, could be a mavericks issue or because I have an older Mac, but Chrome works fine
Thank you for your input guys. I would actually use it for working in my university media department which uses all macs, but I would spend a lot of time in Windows 8.1 on Visual studio in my own time for development. With respective discounts, the rMBP 13" with 8GB/256GB is £1061 while a Surface Pro 2 which I'm contemplating taking a risk on (versus something like Dell) is £1015 (with type cover 2). The Surface Pro 2 is a hard sell as I would have to adjust to such a small screen and foreign form factor. I had a 15" Mid 2010 Macbook Pro which was £1322 and while incredibly solid and consistent for a laptop, I was constantly wanting more performance especially at such a steep price. The GPU melting twice with gaming didn't help, although the only thing I play now is Dota 2 which can run on most toasters! Do any of you wish Macbooks had touch screens, like most Windows 8 devices do? Apparently its very good to have for developing apps.
How reliable can a hackintosh be made to be? Our Mac Pros are just getting too long in tooth to keep up with increasing performance demands, and Darth Vader's thermos requires too much space and energy to get to the same level of expansion. So we need high performance replacements, but since everyone is used to working in OS X, we'd like to keep it that way if possible.
