Thank you for your input guys. I would actually use it for working in my university media department which uses all macs, but I would spend a lot of time in Windows 8.1 on Visual studio in my own time for development. With respective discounts, the rMBP 13" with 8GB/256GB is £1061 while a Surface Pro 2 which I'm contemplating taking a risk on (versus something like Dell) is £1015 (with type cover 2). The Surface Pro 2 is a hard sell as I would have to adjust to such a small screen and foreign form factor. I had a 15" Mid 2010 Macbook Pro which was £1322 and while incredibly solid and consistent for a laptop, I was constantly wanting more performance especially at such a steep price. The GPU melting twice with gaming didn't help, although the only thing I play now is Dota 2 which can run on most toasters! Do any of you wish Macbooks had touch screens, like most Windows 8 devices do? Apparently its very good to have for developing apps.
touch screen? no. i find them to be more hassle than benefit on laptops [editline]16th May 2014[/editline] i could see it being maybe useful on laptops with bad trackpads, but as far as the macbook goes it's as good as it gets.
http://www.anandtech.com/show/8023/apple-releases-osx-10-9-3-improved-4k-display I don't know if anyone here uses a 4K monitor but if you do and you run anything with Iris pro or a discrete GPU you should definitely get 10.9.3. It's actually insane to think about what Apple is doing with the scaled resolutions. If you run in the 3200x1800 scaled mode it's rendered offscreen at a resolution of 20MP. You can actually end up fitting more on your display than just running at native 3840x2160 too because applications can map pixels 1:1 to that offscreen 6016x3384 canvas. It's honestly just mind blowing. GPUs don't even officially support anything above 2560x1600 in a single display stream still either so this is all scaling and filtering algorithms that Apple has done in house.
How reliable can a hackintosh be made to be? Our Mac Pros are just getting too long in tooth to keep up with increasing performance demands, and Darth Vader's thermos requires too much space and energy to get to the same level of expansion. So we need high performance replacements, but since everyone is used to working in OS X, we'd like to keep it that way if possible.
Depends on the hardware. If you need a load of custom stuff to get everything working it will be less reliable. But if you use the correct hardware it should be just as reliable as a real Mac.
My Hackintosh is a success after like 10 attempts. I'm running WiFi over an old tethered Android phone though, none of my wireless adapters are supported. Couldn't get my 5.1 audio working either. It's nice though.
yeah, how about refurbished as an option? I see http://store.apple.com/ca/product/FE662LL/A/refurbished-133-inch-macBook-Pro-26ghz-Dual-core-Intel-Core-i5-with-retina-Display and it seems like an amazing deal. What's the major difference between this MBPr and the late 2013 one? Is it the whole Haswell processor? I like that it has more ram and a bigger SSD for a more affordable price then a new late 2013 MBPr
I have that model but with a 128GB SSD and it's a damn good laptop. I don't know how much better Iris might be for what you do but I don't really have any problems with choppiness or anything while browsing. You might want to see if there's a price drop soon though. Also, don't get a 4GB model if you do look at buying new! [editline]17th May 2014[/editline]
it's really nice with a trackpad, slow in some aspects though. addon support is very small [editline]15th May 2014[/editline] it's a shame, because i don't particularly like chrome and FF isn't really all that great on OS X (huge memory hog, buggy with flash)
I completely uninstalled flash after it kept locking up my laptop. Maybe it's a firefox issue but since I removed it I haven't had a single lockup. Youtube's HTML5 player is shit so I now have cmd-alt-v open a url in VLC. Battery life and temps are much better now I don't use flash and have all gifs paused by default.
my hackintosh is working quite good, except that i have to boot it from an almost broken flash drive
my hackintosh is working quite good, except that i have to boot it from an almost broken flash drive
I had that issue and that's why I was giving up on it but I fixed it somehow.
I had that issue and that's why I was giving up on it but I fixed it somehow.
i know how to fix it but it requires booting the osx setup on that said broken flash drive
Does anyone know how to bind the delete key on my Windows keyboard to send something to trash on OS X?
You can use command(windows key)+backspace.
Yeah ⌘+backspace is the delete shortcut. You can open folders and file with ⌘+O

So I finally was able to install OSX on one of my comps. Installing 10.9 now, since I only had a 10.7 disk. Best part is, I only put the effort in, cause this [editline]21st May 2014[/editline] I don't care for apple, nor do I care much for the hardware. But the OS is really nice, simple and streamlined.
oh, i thought that was a problem specific to me. it just downright locks my laptop up until i force restart
It's actually reassuring knowing it's not affecting just me since it probably means I'm not at fault If something won't fallback to not using flash I just open it in Chrome now since it has its own flash [editline]23rd May 2014[/editline] Flash seriously needs to completely die though, it's a horrible pile of shit in pretty much every way
if i don't want my computer to freeze i open youtube videos in VLC
Any official iPhone 5s Case users here?
Any official iPhone 5s Case users here?
Sometimes. I used the case for a few months and I've stopped since I protect my 5s like it's my own child or something so I prefer using it without the case and I trust myself not to damage it. I bought the blue one which was a mistake due to the leather color wear (I didn't think it'd be as bad as it is); I should have bought the black one so the wearing was less noticeable. When I was in Barbados I used the case all the time because I was doing a lot more hiking and I was using it as a camera so I wanted to ensure its safety. One thing that bugs me is that it doesn't work with Apple's official 5s dock.
I have the Spigen Neo Hybrid, and it honestly feels like part of the phone now, I can't use it without it [editline]25th May 2014[/editline] Plus black case on white phone looks sexy
So I have 2 Sprint iPhone 4S's registered to different accounts in different colors. Is there a way I can have one account on both phones? Swapping the SIM cards didn't work, but I didn't really expect it to.
After a fair bit of reading and reviewing of what I want and need to do in terms of computing, I'm almost set on a max spec rMBP 15" 2013, no rush on it as WWDC might bring the 2014 version. Do any of you own one? I'm looking for more than typical tech reviews, but actual real use reports. I'm aware that yellow tinting of the retina displays is seemingly common, but applecare is pretty good about replacements. Previously I asked about the rMBP 13" but I don't think it has the GPU power to sustain fairly demanding games in the long term.

I love leather things, and AFAIK this is the only "leathery" case that doesn't make iPhone a brick.

I use it at work with Apple Configurator, setting up sometimes as many as 30 iPads within an hour or two (this process is very RAM intensive, and productivity increases linearly with memory.) It kicks ass at this compared to my i5 13" MBP. I also use it at school for photoshop, illustrator, solidworks and a bit of keyshot. Obviously the adobe products will eat up 100% of the resources you throw at them, so those run quite well when I'm not multi-tasking and they would run even better on a max spec rMBP. Keep in mind I'm just running the Intel 4000 chip, and I can still manipulate 14 megapixel raw photos (from my camera) and other huge renderings and illustrations with reasonable speed. As for solidworks and keyshot, I use bootcamp and windows so, if I remember correctly, deal with a 5-10% performance drop. That being said, aside from annoying pixellation/scaling issues, solidworks runs great. Keyshot is quite opposite of that. With everything at a full on sprint, I have to keep the window quite small to maintain decent FPS on simple scenes. When things get complex, scene navigation becomes quite choppy. But that's to be expected, and I don't use it often for keyshot anyways since my school has a render farm. Switching between solidworks and keyshot running hot drops my battery life to about 2 hours. All of that is with recommended scaling setting (1440x900). I have to say that 15" rMBP is quite a capable workstation for what feels like a 5 pound computer that I can take almost anywhere. Lags on fb tho
Does anyone know how to stop Safari from refreshing pages when going back? I want to be able to use it like I did firefox but I really can't put up with it refreshing every single page and I also can't see why there's no obvious option to turn it off. I'd happily have my browser use a shitload more memory if it meant not doing this.
i don't think you can change how that behaves. there might be an extension but safari has a tiny amount of support when it comes to those
Well that's a huge turn off, I guess I'll give Chrome a shot then. Shame, since it was a really smooth browsing experience.

Lags on fb tho
Thanks for that. I played with a base 15" rMBP 2013 today with the Iris Pro, it was actually locking up when I went to it on iPhoto. Rebooted very fast and was very pleasant to use. With 1080p res it was usable visually if I sat down but slowed just a little in general use. Got to say that if its consistently powerful I'd have it out and about with me on a daily basis. The 13" would be better for that but I need a discreet GPU to cover me in the long term.
Well that's a huge turn off, I guess I'll give Chrome a shot then. Shame, since it was a really smooth browsing experience.
yep, neither firefox or chrome seem to scroll as smooth as safari does which is a shame because it's easy on the eyes
Damn, I kinda regret getting a white iPad mini now, I kinda want a black one now...
Damn, I kinda regret getting a white iPad mini now, I kinda want a black one now...
I hear the same thing from everyone who buys a white iPad... Never seen the point, honestly. Black just looks better all the time.
