When I leave the office tonight I'll try replicating what you're doing and see if I hear it.
I'm using a late 2012 13 inch Retina, maybe its gpu just runs hotter. I just open youtube videos in VLC now anyway since it doesn't seem to use the gpu and thus doesn't ramp up the fans.
[editline]16th July 2014[/editline]
I can peg all cores/threads at 100% while compiling something and the fans won't even spin at all, but when something uses the gpu they start up. For the first few weeks of owning this laptop I didn't even think it had fans.
That GPU is on die so it's strange that the fans would ramp up for when it's being used but not for a maxed out CPU.
For some reason, my macbook pro croaks when I boot or resume from sleep... and my parents don't want to hear my problem as it "always happens with a new laptop". I have a video of it croaking when I turn on the laptop.
Edit: it's coming from the bottom right of the laptop

make sure it doesn't have a frog inside of it
if it's creaking take it back to the apple store

It's definitely not the chassis, the chassis seems to be built very solidly. I'm going to take it to Western Computer in Oxford for it to be checked out on Monday if the issue seems to persist.
Okay the searing right hand side of the vent and the touchable warm side of the vent seems out of... Balance. More of a reason to get it looked at soon, it was bad enough to make my finger burn a little.
Why not take it to an apple store?
Why not take it to an apple store?
It's an authorised reseller and service provider, and it's the nearest one for Apple products.
What the hell apple are you fucking insane removing the second fan in this 2013 model? Jesus Christ I feel dumb.
you sound ridiculous lol
Is there any way to see previous billing cycle data usage on the iPhone?
Thoughts on Yosemite? I have a partition of the developer preview and my initial thoughts can be summed up by this: :(
I really don't like the iOSification of it and the new simplified Safari just isn't very nice to use... But they have introduced WebGL which is awesome. They've also got a pane bringing back OS Extensions, which could be interesting.
Not usually one to reject change but I thought the last couple of releases of OS X looked gorgeous.

I'm kind of glad that they're moving away from the grey gradient scheme which they've had for like 6 years. Also kind of happy with the no titlebar taking up space thing.
I've got a G5 iMac for about $100, I'm probably going to take the Mobo out and adapt it as a display
most imacs have proprietary display connections from the motherboard to the internal screen. are you going to put another display in the machine?

Psych. I'll be getting it when I come back from holiday.
Can't seem to find a satisfying answer for this question so I will post here...
What is the best system: a macbook air with a core i7 or a macbook pro retina with an i5? (Both with 8gb ram, 128gb ssd)? They are both very similar in price with these upgrades, so is it literally choosing between a faster processor and a retina display? Or are the i7 in the air inferior to those in the pro, and therefore not much of an upgrade over the macbook pro i5?
the i5 in the pro is probably about as good as the i7 in the air if not a hair slower in a few usage cases. i would personally go for the i5 retina just for the display.
The i5 in the pro is actually probably faster in most cases, since it has a higher base clock and can sustain turbo for longer. The differences in cache size are greatly outweighed.
Yosemite public beta is happening tomorrow, get hype.
Right now I'm just pondering if I should install it ASAP. I'm going on holiday for 2 weeks on friday.
anyone get an email about yosemite yet?
anyone get an email about yosemite yet?
Nope. It's 4:10 PM here now, I'm expecting something to hit around 7. I think it's always kinda been like that.
ah, yeah
on another note, why does FaceTime cost money on the app store?

I think it should be saying "Installed" since we'd already have it on ours, and I'm sure it's a version for Leopard users.
that's possible, it says it's not installed on my mavericks laptop (though it is installed through the stock install)
also, new facetime in yosemite splits audio and video chat. woo

You really need to have Aperture installed?
nope
Guh, the beta website has shit itself.
Oh well, at least it gives me some time to make a backup Mavericks USB in case things go tits-up. Get the smaller programs on my USB hard drive and I'm all set to go back to Mavericks if things go wrong.
