For doing programming you really need a 15" display right? 13 sounds way too small.
I'd go for 15 unless your eyes can see super small text pretty well. Oh and just add a second monitor and you'd be good to go for max productivity.
so after a quick skim over the last couple of pages, general view is that it'd be silly not to upgrade to yosemite? Currently running mavericks on a mid-2012 higher end mbp, with internal SSD. no likely issues? Last time I looked at upgrading os yosemite had only just been released so I wanted to wait a while and see if problems popped up, but it looks pretty good now
I put Yosemite on my 2008 MB a couple months ago. Nothing broke, seems to be a bit more responsive actually I don't use it for much though
10.10.1 (should fix wi-fi issues) and iOS 8.1.1 (improvements for 4s and ipad 2) are out.
I jailbroke my 6 tonight, anything you guys recommend?
eGlobalCentral to buy a MBP before? A few people I know have used it for camera stuff and said it's great. Heres the MBP http://www.eglobalcentral.eu/apple-m...w-version.html It's way cheaper than buying from Apple as it doesn't have any VAT. Just wondering does it come the same as from Apple or would it be in a different language or something

That's odd. Try this now http://www.eglobalcentral.eu/apple-macbook-pro-15-retina-2.2ghz-quad-core-intel-core-i7-256gb-mgxa2-2014-new-version.html After talking with support they said that all custom and VAT is included in the price so it will be 1599.99 for newest MBP 15". Also said it is an american keyboard and I have the 1 year apple warranty. Only thing I want to find out is if the packaging and all is in english or some other language. Said it comes sealed and everything so I think I'll go for it. Just wanted to ask here if anybody had any experience with them
just be very aware of import tax. i'm assuming you're in ireland and as far as i know there isn't any massive exemption on import tax there so it might well be worth checking out because although the product is advertised as vat free, it's coming from outside of your country (hong kong, by the looks of things) and so you'll need to pay the VAT when it enters the country. usually. i did a quick check and for a £1600 laptop coming from HK to IE the import tax will be €374.90, which probably pushes you back to roughly what you'd be paying for it anyway? if none of this is true (and you don't pay import tax) then it seems like a really good deal, but just double check first, you might not end up getting as much of a bargain as you think.
Yeah I was wary of that and I looked into it more. I wrote to them on chat and they said that they handle all import costs and all, it rarely gets caught and if it does they say they cover the costs of it. I think I should be good to go on it. I don't really need the dedicated GPU so I think i'll get the other 15". But to be honest I'm really torn as to what one to get. I'm a programmer so big screen size is good. Friend said a few people in work use 13" and say its too small. I think I more want to get the 15" for playing the odd game on but it wont have a dedicated GPU so I don't know if it will even be as good. What do you guys think? Mainly want a Macbook for work stuff, just duno if I can justify the near 500 price gap between a mid tier 13" and a regular 15"
Get the 13" and spend the money saved on an external monitor, win win [editline]24th November 2014[/editline] I'm a graphic designer but 15" wasn't going to be big enough regardless so I spent ~£100 on a reasonable 23" monitor and now I'm sorted, no regrets not getting the 15"

I'm literally getting the MBP for programming and and that stuff. I plan on buying a laptop for playing games and lan stuff in the future. I'm trying to fool myself into thinking that I need the 15" so I can play a few games on crappy settings when I know I can play on the computer at home. What tier 13" do you reckon? I'm thinking the middle one with 256gb storage built in and 2.6GHz Intel.
the 256gb one is good. i have the 4gb 128gb when it was still around and even that serves me well. i'm a photographer and videographer, and i find that it's sufficient for light premiere and lightroom loads. the 15" is way less portable, just saying. great if you want a bigger screen, but the 13" is perfect if you're going to be carrying it around a lot

I'd be bringing it girlfriends and stuff to do work there and I will bring it to work when I'm there. Just worried 13" is too small for programming like what one friend of mine said. Can the 13"s built in GPU handle any sort of gaming? Even on lowest settings
yeah, it can handle light gaming for sure. just be ready to drop down your res (in games 1280x800 looks okay anyways. it can play bf3 at that res on low-med) [editline]24th November 2014[/editline] also, as a learning programmer, it's not really that small. i would consider maybe changing the scaling from default to 1680x1050, that would be pretty spacey

Saw some videos of a guy playing CSGO at 60FPS so that's all I need really ha. In comparision to a 23 or 24" 1080p monitor, what does the resolution of the 13" pro compare to? Like with what your fitting inside that resolution. My friend just said debugging in eclipse on a 13" pro will be a nightmare but I duno.

The native best for retina mode emulates 1280x800 which is a joke, but the higher scaled modes are 1440x900 and 1680x1050 which are much more usable. You can also use 3rd party software to just run 1:1 2560x1600 if you want to.
I'm not really the best with resolutions, so I'm on a monitor right now that's 21" and 1920x1080 resolution. How much real estate am I missing out on with the 13" at full retina.
the 13" can look like a 1680x1050 monitor in terms of real estate. the extra resolution is used to make everything smoother
I see, not too bad then. So you guys reckon the mid tier 13" would be grand? So much money just don't want to regret it
Getting a 13" for programming is one of those things that sounds okay but you come to really regret 6 months down the line.
Getting a 13" for programming is one of those things that sounds okay but you come to really regret 6 months down the line.
I really don't get why. 1050 vertical lines is not a huge step down from the max of 1200 on the 15".
I really don't get why. 1050 vertical lines is not a huge step down from the max of 1200 on the 15".
No, but the text is physically smaller. If you've got great eyesight, it's probably fine, but if you don't you'll be squinting a lot.
No, but the text is physically smaller. If you've got great eyesight, it's probably fine, but if you don't you'll be squinting a lot.
It's really not smaller. We're talking about a software DPI difference of 2, which means that text will be mapped to the same number of pixels except for the most extreme edge case ever of subpixel rendering on the very edge of Arabic script. The PPI of the displays differs by six, which means that the pixels on both displays are basically the same size. This means that not only is the physical mapping the same, but because the pixels themselves are the same size, the text is roughly the same size on both displays.

Ah man now I'm lost again ha . Will I regret the 13" like he said ??? Fuck decisions. Should I spent 189 extra to get the higher end 13" with 512SSD or stay with the 256

Do you want to lug around an external hard drive too, or just rely on internal storage all the time?
Depends. Do you want to lug around an external hard drive too, or just rely on internal storage all the time?
Just internal storage. I wouldn't have that much on it because I have everything on my desktop
I love how you know pretty much everything about a very specific thing that everyone always seems to get wrong.
I think he just meant that viewing the same amount of code on a 15" is fairly easier on the eyes in comparison to viewing the same amount on a 13" I ran a 13" lappy for the longest time but I could never get used to having to deal with the tradeoff of fitting less information or having smaller information so I upgraded to a 15" and my eyes are much happier
Just internal storage. I wouldn't have that much on it because I have everything on my desktop
Then go for the 256GB. If it were a primary machine, I would go for the 512, but it isn't.
