Sweet. In terms of power, is the base 15" much more powerful than the mid 13"?
I know the 15" has Iris Pro but other than that same RAM and SSD space and all.

It might be of importance to know that the 15" has the quad core i7 in comparison to the 13" with its dual core i5-i7. Check primate labs geek bench browser for all mac model benchmarks. Let me see if I can find it

Hmm 13 seems to have a decent bit of a lower score. In terms of actually using them though how much of a power difference does it end up being

I guess it depends. I managed very well with my 2011 13" in terms of java, ruby and python programming, some gaming (mostly source games, intel's hd 3000 performed surprisingly well) as well as some semi-heavy matlab computations (performed most of the work behind my bachelor thesis on it until I got to ssh into a dedicated computational terminal at my department). I was going to buy the 13" retina as well, but then I got a sweet deal on a 15" locally on our equivalent to craigslist instead. I'd say that the 13" should handle most of what you throw at it. For now, I think that barely any application I use utilizes the four cores anyway, except for, perhaps some specific matlab functions.
Yeah my friend has a 2011 13" and said it suited him fine and he has a 13" retina in work and says he doesn't feel there is a lack of space either. From what I'm hearing though the 13" is like 60% as powerful as the 15", so maybe 340 euro would be worth the upgrade?

If you're not strapped for cash, I'd go with the 15". I've also heard that iris pro is pretty much the same performancewise as the 650m from the previous generation, which is quite impressive. Go for it!

That's what I'm waiting for because then we should get either better graphics performance or better battery life. Or maybe both.
Yeah leaning towards the 15" now since for 340, the extra space and power seems like it would be worth it.
I heard about the broadwell update. Is there any ideas as to when abouts it would be coming? I wanted to have the Macbook for Christmas. I'm sure I could just buy now and sell it when Broadwell comes out if it makes that much of a difference in terms of power
I just reformatted (had Yosemite installed) and Mavericks was downloaded during the OSX install. Is this the case with every pre 2014 machine? Was hoping it would just download Yosemite.

It'll download whatever the OS it shipped with was.
Ended up going for a 15". Found one on eBay for 1530 so the 300 price difference made me go for it. Saw the 13 and 15 in store and both me and my girlfriend thought the 13" felt heavier even though its not. Probably the angle we held it. I think the guy above was right, I would regret it after a while if I got the 15"
I need a laptop badly. Trying to be productive on a phone does not work.
I'm looking at the Macbook Airs for next year, thinking about replacing my 2011 MBP. What sort of performance losses am I going to take by doing that?

Nobody knows because we'll probably have a rMBA by then, with who knows what for performance. Would have had it now if Intel could deliver enough volume of Broadwell.

Oh, sorry, I worded that poorly. I didn't mean next year's Macbook Airs, I meant I was looking to buy a current-gen Macbook Air next year. That should help clear that up.

Oh. Hmm. It'll probably be significant just on the basis of clockspeed. Obviously the Air can turbo, but it can't sustain it forever.

I'd get a MacBook but I don't have the money and I'm fine with Windows. I looked into Chromebooks and while they're neat, they're not quite ready for my everyday use. I love the new OSX feature that shows SMS and iMessage from my iPhone.

Yeah I can't really see myself being able to do what I need to do on a Chromebook because I would be doing photo and video editing on it. Chromebooks can't support Adobe software so they are kinda out. I have an Android phone so I can't really use that iMessage feature. Oh well.
I'm missing my iPhone 5. This 6 screen is just too big for me and I don't like the design. iPhone 5 was the sexiest phone design ever but we'll never go back because Apple jumped on the bigger = better fad.
Foolishly tried to get TRIM working in yosemite. Wouldn't recommend it as it won't boot anymore. Tried a few things but to no avail.
Is it just me or is the internet recovery system pretty flawed in that it will only restore OS X to the version that came with your machine, yet if you have anything newer installed it refuses to do it. Kinda seems ridiculous?
Have you tried this out? http://www.cindori.org/trim-enabler-and-yosemite/ It was working for me.
Also installed a 128gb crucial mx100 on a Pro 2011 and it's amazing

People misuse this word so often it's unbelievable. I'm sorry but just because you like something doesn't make it a fad, the word fad has a very concrete definition which does not fit because every phone now has a display larger than 4" and there's absolutely no trend back toward 4".
I didn't mean it like that but either way it seems like phone manufactures are in the mindset of bigger equals better. And for some customers that's true but now there is virtually no market for a small phone screen. The few phones that do are awful in every other aspect.

Honestly it's because almost nobody actually wants those devices. The reason Apple was forced into changing was because there was absolutely no growth in the high end 4" device segment. There was growth in low end 4" devices, and high end 4.5"+ devices, but at best the 4" high end segment was flat just due to the iPhone, and more likely in decline.
That is the problem with basically controlling a section of the market, isn't it? You can make the best damn 4" phone that's ever been, but there' still only so much demand for a 4" phone. I do think it's odd that they've abandoned all the demand for a 4" phone, but market pressures have sort of forced them out of it now.
I just hope phones stop getting bigger before we stop using them as phones. My 6 is still just big enough to be a bit awkward, I couldn't use a 6+ or larger.
Something about the curved edges and the smooth aluminium back makes the 6 and 6+ slip on my hand a lot, which could be fixed with skins or a grippy low profile case.

Yeah you know, I was surprised there was no 6C or whatever. If they put A8 and MDM9x25 into the 5S size it would have huge battery improvements.
Does anyone have any ideas on how you can apply a system proxy to applications while they are sandboxed? Have issues where things aren't working because they arn't getting the proxy settings right while SB'd
Have my 15" MBPr on the way, any other things I should pick up for it? Do people recommend mouses or anything?
