I bought myself a 13" rMBP today, and I'm liking it so far. It's so much smaller and lighter than the 15" I had, and the screen is so much better. I thought the 15" was clear enough, but I really don't think I could go back now. This is fantastic. Anything I need to know about this, though? What can I expect to get out of the Intel Iris graphics and i5? Is this going to be "pro" enough? I'm a journalism student. The most I should ever need to do with this is simple photo and video editing, and displaying powerpoints off a projector. I won't have any issues with that, will I?
I have one as well, it runs perfect. Heck, I even do some gaming on it once in a while. It's not the toughest machine, but it can run most games. Keep in mind, some games are not optimized on Mac, and thus you'd have to go for dual boot. (Also, if you decide to run Boot camp, keep in mind that a bug with Windows & the Yosemite EFI gives system interruptions, it can be fixed by simply closing the lid (and thus putting it to sleep / hibernate) and opening again.
retina macbook pro is a pretty tough laptop actually
Yeah, I noticed last night I was able to get 150FPS in Half-Life 2 on max settings, which is pretty remarkable for an Intel integrated chipset. The first one of those I had wouldn't even render the water in Gmod, so things have definitely improved. Also, I didn't realize how light these things were. They weigh absolutely nothing. It's great.

On my side of things Half Life 2 just kept shitting itself and the AI bugs out, the sound is gone after a map load and it stops responding leading to a forced quit.
Got tired of my old rig which was a loud 6+ year old PC and 17" 4:3 monitor and managed to get a ~10 month old 2012 Mac mini with a 24" monitor, Magic Mouse and wired Apple keyboard for $599 on eBay. Added an SSD to run in Fusion with the included drive and upgraded the RAM to 8 GB. Pretty happy with this new set up.

Very little stutter, and everything works fine. I'd try reinstalling yours, if you haven't already.

A single USB port, no thunderbolt, no SD card reader and I doubt that's going to function as a charging port either.
I think that sort of thing has a very specific niche it's trying to fill. It's basically for all the people who keep asking for full desktop and keyboard+mouse support for the iPad, since that's basically what it is: an iPad that runs OS X and can have a keyboard and mouse. I kind of like the idea though, if I'm honest. The laptop would charge through the USB-C port, and USB-C is backwards compatible with USB-3, 2, 1, Thunderbolt, Displayport, HDMI, and DVI. Ideally, if Apple made something like that, I'd imagine they'd have a hub for it so you could charge it while using an external monitor, or even just have it draw power from the next-generation Thunderbolt displays. But yeah, it's an interesting design, and it's not for everyone, but it isn't without merits. And those merits are people who want an iPad mounted on a keyboard. I'd imagine Apple would at least include two ports, though, like they've always done on all of their laptops.
I'm really thinking about buying one of the lower end macbook pros with my student loan money cuz my old laptop broke like half a year ago and I really miss the convenience of having a laptop also my mom and sister have macbook pros and they're pretty beautiful tbh

If you can, and you intend to store a lot of things, I'd get the $1799/$1699 with student discount model. It also gives you a default upgrade to a 2.8Ghz processor. That's literally the only difference, the two lower-tiered models are just the same 2.6Ghz processor with varying storage.

I'm guessing you have to have an .edu email or something? I'm getting roughly $3000~ and not even $500 of that is going towards books so the $1699 wouldn't be a huge hit and 512gb of flash storage ain't too shabby

If not, just go to Apple's education store and order it there.
okay I'm still not 100% decided what are some pros and cons of getting a MBPr vs. some higher-end windows laptop? off the top of my head the display is a huge plus, but i would have to learn an entirely new OS almost from scratch (i have minimal experience with OS X) and the price

The cons are the price and the inability to actually upgrade like you can do with a Windows laptop, it bothers me but there's nothing else you can do apart from thinking straight before you order.
Oh and if it changes any opinions, I'm a newly enrolled compsci student. I know a lot of people prefer OS X for programming and such but I never bothered finding out if it was for legitimate reasons or if it was just personal preference because I never had that many issues using windows

Also, if you have any technical issues, you can walk into any Apple Store and usually get it fixed that day, so you're not out of commission for weeks or months waiting on an RMA. If you need something relatively powerful, but incredibly reliable, I'd get a Mac. If you're just after power, and you really don't care how well it holds up, then you can find more power for less in other brands.

Os x isn't too hard to figure out how to use it tho.

Every laptop my family has ever had seems to fail within 3 years, not counting the one MacBook, which has lasted... 8 I think? I thought it was mostly just a fluke though

It's a little slower than modern laptops, sure, but it runs just fine otherwise.

I have a Mid 2011 MacBook Air... seriously considering a rMBP... should I?
I have a Mid 2011 MacBook Air... seriously considering a rMBP... should I?
Yes.
I see you have a 13", do you use it for any development work? I'm pretty keen to ditch my desktop for daily use and skew towards minimalist but powerful.

I couldn't tell you how it does for software development, but Google probably doesn't run an exclusively-Mac setup in their offices for nothing.

so I've decided to give iPhone a shot, been with android for ~3 years and windows phone for 1. I'm just looking around Buying from apple is too expensive but there's a lot of great deals on sites like gumtree, seeing iPhone 6's being sold for around $720AU which isn't a bad grab seeing as iPhone 6 (16gb) sell for a recommended retail price of $869 Should I be concerned from buying 2nd hand/"newer" models from sites like these? [editline]11th January 2015[/editline] also what's your general thoughts on iPhone 6 anyway, I think it'd be great for me seeing it's 4.7" and my nexus 4 is 4.7" My n4 fits my hand well, the iPhone 5s and earlier with it's 4" display feel very small

Be wary of stolen goods on gumtree and the like, if you pay cash there's no going back. I have an iPhone 6 myself, came from a galaxy s4 and couldn't be happier.
