That 13" retina price is killing me, it's harder for me to just tell myself it's too expensive. My wallet is begging that the 5s already cost too much and I don't need a MacBook but I sure do want it.

I went in and bought one to try it out with the intention on returning it. I'm so sold on it now I ordered the new Haswell 13" yesterday and will be returning this one Friday.
Tempted to get one, as I've managed to find a guaranteed buyer for my 2009 MBP for £400, plus a £200 student discount and that's a MacBook Pro for half the price.
On the other hand, the little dude in the back of my head is telling me to wait for a job.
Woah, I paid less than that for my 2010 MBP, specs?
Apple's implemented free iWork eligibility rather differently on the MAS - the mere presence of an older version of iWork (even a trial, at that) will allow you to get iWork '13 for free.
I am amazed at the durability of these things...
It helps when your campus is filled with things to constantly trip over, like short ledges in the middle of auditoriums. Doesn't help dealing with the embarrassment of actually tripping over said short ledges.
God help me.

Probably some weird thing they have about upgrading. I got a refund for Pixelmator a while back but kept the .app and kept getting updates until the 3.0 update yesterday. It didn't show up in the purchased tab either, so I couldn't redownload it. Probably the same deal with iWork.

I wish I was like you where I had enough disposable income to be able to order a second laptop before returning the first one.

Both are on my Credit Card so I can get the extra warranty, protection, etc.
I bet it doesn't look good to Amex considering I've had the card for months and never used it except for the $4k this last week, but I have the money to pay the new one off this statement so all is well.

2.26GHz C2D, 8GB RAM, 250GB HDD. They seem to go for £400-£450 on Gumtree a lot.

Mine is2.4GHz, 8GB RAM and 250GB HDD. Got mine for ~£380.
I sold an imac for £500 the other day.
Do i win?
Hey guys, just got ordered my first ever Mac online today. I wanted to do some programming with Xcode as well as use it for school purposes, so I decided to go with the 13 inch macbook air. I had a lot of anxiety about spending that much on a laptop... but I hope it pays off in the end. I'm excited nonetheless! :v:
I know the air is a lot lighter, but it's odd that in terms of dimensions the 13" rMBP and 13" air really aren't far apart. The air is 0.03" thinner but it's actually 0.45" wider. I always thought of it as being more compact too for some reason, but it's not now anyway. I guess that's why its name just refers to weight.
Yeah. The weight is pretty nice. The only thing I'm worried about is the damage... such as if I put it in my backpack with books. Might just get a sleeve and carry it in my hands. I'm just hoping it will be worth the money and all. I was thinking about getting parallels as well, so I can use Windows 8 along with it whenever I need it in my other programming classes.

For reference I keep an iPad in my backpack with my binder and 3 textbooks and it hasn't gotten damaged with a smart cover over the glass. I think it'll be fine, but a laptop bag or case or something never hurts, and if you can afford a Macbook you can probably afford a bag.
Speaking of protective gear, has anyone used the official leather 5/5s case? I'm debating buying one but I'm unsure if i'll like it. It didn't look like Apple had any display models with it either, do you think they'd have one behind the bar or something I could try out?
Got my free iLife updates. [del]I also got iOS7 GarageBand which I never purchased before[/del] it's free now; I don't own iWork for iOS though; only iMovie and iPhoto.
[editline]23rd October 2013[/editline]
oh my gosh iOS 7 garageband is so delicious
Do we get reimbursed for garage band if we've purchased it before?

I thought for a the iPad Air wasn't replacing the normal iPad, makes more sense that they replaced it, would of been weird if they brought out just a thin version of the normal iPad.
Other then that I've got to have a go with it to see if it's worth it (I work at an apple reseller so as soon as it comes out I get to use it)

MS has taken to bashing Apple for making iWork free, calling it 'priced like an afterthought' and saying it 'never got much traction'.
That's of course debatable but this made me fucking laugh.
But helping people be productive on a tablet is a little trickier. It takes an understanding of how people actually work, how they get things done, and how to best support the way they do things already.
The good news is that Microsoft understands how people work better than anyone else on the planet.
Oh, so that's why you had a 900 million dollar write-down on unsold Surfaces?

Microsoft relies on bashing other people's products in order to make their own products look better in comparison.
They've been doing this for quite a while now. They've been especially aggressive since Windows 8.
It's honestly a joke. I used to buy Samsung phones, and with Samsung's ads becoming Apple bashing as they became a larger presence in smartphones I asked myself
Are these really good products when they can't stand on their own merit and have to stand on pointing out supposed shortcomings of other products?
The answer is no. Any product that has its "strengths" show based on criticizing other products is clearly not a good product, because the company making it believes that on its own it's not special enough to stand out to people without them being told how and why it stands out. It's why Samsung products are bad, and Microsoft products are bad, and why if I couldn't have my iPhone I'd be running to HTC.
Does anybody know if snap on style cases fit on the new retina MacBooks?
I'm pretty sure I saw that the 13" form factor was smaller, haven't seen anything about the 15" yet though.

Yeah right, Apple never bashed any other company in an ad.
Not saying a product shouldn't stand on its own (and I fucking hate ads), but complaning about ads bashing other products and then say "Apple is great in that regard" with a straight face is just asinine. They even did it during the keynote.
Quote from keynote:
"Now you can create a document on an iPad, edit it on a Mac, and even share it with a friend who's stuck on a PC."
Or (completely asinine comparison):

Or:
"Now, our competition is different: they're confused. They chased after netbooks. Now they're trying to make PCs into tablets and tablets into PCs. Who knows what they'll do next?"
Yeah, Apple does it, too.

Look at Apple's iPad ads, then look at the ones for Windows tablets. If you can't see what I'm talking about just from those then you might want to reconsider which one of us thinks in an asinine way.
Apple doesn't make commercials with mock Samsung and Microsoft stores and have all the Samsung and Microsoft buyers portrayed as braindead zombies that are finally shown the light by an iPhone like Samsung has done to others. They don't pit the Surface against the iPad in some ridiculous commercial and then make outright inaccurate or false claims. The worst I saw at the keynote was Tim Cook mentioning the stretched out smartphone app everyone else is doing. They didn't even mention a specific brand, they acknowledged competitors as a whole. That's completely different than taking cheap shots at a specific competitor, and putting out false information while they do so.

What about the "I'm a Mac" ads? Sure, they're not exactly new, but they're still there and they were aired. A lot. Apple is in a completely different part of the market now - they don't have to convince people that the iPad is better (they have a majority of the market), but their competitors have to prove that product is as good as the iPad.
It's marketing, every company does it. Apple does it, too, but to a lesser extent now than before. And I added some examples from the keynote.
"Now you can create a document on an iPad, edit it on a Mac, and even share it with a friend who's stuck on a PC."
How is this even remotely comparable to what Samsung or Microsoft are doing? Did they pull out a PC with a ton of Microsoft branding and show iWork vs Office, and then throw together an ad where Microsoft Sam did a voiceover and said that quote? No, they didn't. That's extremely tame, and Apple has always made little comments like that but they don't single out a specific company and bash them alone like Samsung and Microsoft does to them. Even when they compared the Nexus 7 to the iPad at one of their keynotes they never named it, they used it as a general example for all competitors in the tablet space.

And I hated Apple back then and if you check my posts back in 2009/2010(do they even exist anymore?) you can confirm that for yourself. Those commercials were retarded and very unlike how Apple should be doing advertisements.

I don't think Apple cares, dude. You make it sound like Microsoft and Samsung are bullying them and it's personal or something. Apple is currently using one kind of marketing, Samsung and Microsoft another. The roles have been reversed before. Don't get emotional about it, it's companies trying to get your money.
"Now, our competition is different: they're confused. They chased after netbooks. Now they're trying to make PCs into tablets and tablets into PCs. Who knows what they'll do next?"
This doesn't at all fit what I said. You're clearly incapable of understanding my gripe with Samsung and Microsoft's advertisements if this is what you pull up as an example.

Samsung seems to treat it as personal considering they pretty much exclusively take cheap shots at Apple. They never did some commercial criticizing the HTC One, and it's weird because that seems a lot more like a phone Samsung buyers would be swayed to buy than an iPhone.
Edit:FP what the hell, why didn't you merge.
