The client uses mono, which is kind of stupid. Almost as unbearable as wine.
I've never liked the idea of Mono as an "Cross Platform" solution. Obviously because of the way .NET works it would be a perfect for cross platform but it's not. The issue is that the .NET standard established doesn't fit at all almost all applications that use .NET or even Mono for that matter. One of the biggest examples of this is WinForms. It is not part of the .NET standard. The problem is that Mono has to catch up to any new .NET version Microsoft uses. It's the same deal with WINE. It's not cross platform and it doesn't help Linux as a platform in any way. This is the same for WINE. (I am not trying to shit on either project) What WINE and MONO do is simply make less people actually develop for the platform. If you can run the application in WINE or MONO what is the point of even building it for Linux. The platform will never grow if developers don't develop more for it. We can't have MONO or WINE replace actual companies making software for Linux. I mean proprietary software. Yes, open source is all nice and what not, but we won't go anywhere without some businesses making money with the OS. I'm just realizing that this is not the best place for a rant so I'll cut it here. Also, I am a bit unclear, I have trouble putting words together when I'm tired. Also, MONO having applications use the Windows Classic (WinForms) look makes me want to puke.
We seriously need a crossplatform Steam chat client, mono or not. Web-based version, a messenger-like client (say, a green Steam icon that you can use to access your friends) for all platforms.
I'm pretty sure that someone could add the steam protocol to Pidgin rather easily.
When a steam client is officially released for Linux I'm going to install Arch and dual-boot. I will use Windows for gaming and Linux for general computing/programming.
But they're not working on it...
