Just got my Nexus S in the mail.
Fucking. Sexy.
I'm kind of sure that the HTC Desire's OLED screen wasn't even a Super AMOLED.
[editline]22nd September 2011[/editline]
One of the biggest problems with pure AOSP Android is that it's really missing a cohesive and consistent UI. Really really hope that Jellybean or ICS fixes it.
[editline]22nd September 2011[/editline]
I think the reason why it'd be a big deal is because the "plain old LCD" screen of the OG Droid is still a very very good screen. Otherwise, Pentile or not, I don't really notice a huge difference. 800x480 SAMOLED in a 4 inch formfactor might appear a bit worse with very specific patterns, but it really shouldn't be a big deal.
[editline]22nd September 2011[/editline]
In Motorola's Pentile phones I'm pretty sure it's RGBW.
Yup the HTC Desire was old AMOLED which means it had that extra layer between the panel and the glass. Also you're also correct about motorola. They do in fact use RGBW screens and they're much much more efficient than RGB ones. As for the patterns being more noticeable on a 4 inch SAMOLED, they really aren't. I can see the subpixels in phones like the Galaxy S II and the Droid 3 to the same extent as I can on my SGS. They edges of objects on the SGS look worse. BUT! When looking at the grid effect RGB gives you the SGS looks a lot better than the SAMOLED+ because the pattern goes diagonally and you don't get very pronounced lines that can be seen, just dots.
The screen is a smidge smaller on the Glide, measuring-in at only 4 inches, and we're told it will be a Super AMOLED display. We would have expected it to use Super AMOLED Plus technology, as the GS2, but the source's failure to mention "plus" may have just been an oversight.
What a coincidence. Our conversation above you addresses this very issue. The PPI for a 4.3 inch RGBG screen is too low so they used RGB. Back at 4 inches they'll continue to use RGBG. Very interesting that you posted that right after.

By the way. Rogers never updates their phones so if you guys are thinking of getting the glide you should probably be comfortable with getting ICS 3-6 months after the i9100 gets it.
Great site with all sorts of cool customized homescreen. Can help you plan on working on your screen also.

Any new batteries for the SGS2? The battery life is horrid.
Any new batteries for the SGS2? The battery life is horrid.
There's a official battery from Samsung on 2000 mAh which comes with a new back piece adding 1 mm to the thickness.
Sec. finding link.
Samsung are going to release a 2000mAh battery for the SGSII. Adds 1mm thickness!

Here you go!
I think that just getting a spare battery works so much better, its skinny enough to carry around and doubles your battery life.
Or maybe you cant sacrifice the 2 minutes of downtime to switch it.

I get through the day watching movies, browsing and listening to music. Weird how we all have different experiences with our battery life.

And still fucking thin.

I'm definitely going to get the battery that I posted a link of above, since it adds the 1 mm thickness and so the camera lens on the back isn't exposed and on par with the back lid.
Also removes the small hump at the bottom back (goes on par with it), which annoys me just a tiny bit since it's not symmetrical. :v:
That actually looks better than the stock battery cover.
That actually looks better than the stock battery cover.
Really does.
I'm just waiting for it to be officially out on the market as it's currently just sold in selected places in Europe.
Picked up my SGS2 yesterday. Managed to get it for $25, which made the case more expensive than the phone...

I have the biggest frown right now.
Guys he bought it subsidized. Getting a phone from bestbuy on a three year Bell contract for $25=/=getting a phone for $25.

That's what you get for being too used to seeing all those contracts with a free phone.
Just upgraded my phone to the Galaxy S (1). Can't wait. What are some must-do things to do to it when I get it? :v:

The united states never got the Galaxy S. Which carrier do you use?
Well Voodoo sound works on every SGS device so that's definitely something to look into. Google it and you should get all the info you need. Makes the sound quality a lot better. You also might want to check what special kernels are available for your device. If available you should replace Touchwiz 3 with Touchwiz 4.

The only reason I'm still on a contract is because I get yearly upgrades on my EPP plan.

AT&T. The Samsung Captivate is the Galaxy S, is it not?

The US custom variants are not the same as the actual Galaxy S.

Oh well, I heard it's still a good phone.
Oh it is. Just isn't compatible with mods for all the other versions. So some stuff for the i9000 wont work and vice versa with the captivate mods.

Okie dokie, thanks. Also, will the phone come with the required cable to move music to it from my computer, or will I have to order one from somewhere?
Okie dokie, thanks. Also, will the phone come with the required cable to move music to it from my computer, or will I have to order one from somewhere?
Yup. It comes with a micro usb cable. Unless AT&T has fucked around with the firmware you should go to settings>applications>development and check enable usb debugging. This will make the computer recognize the captivate as a usb storage device. Then just drag and drop music.
The phone should work without any extra drivers. AVOID INSTALLING KIES IF YOU CAN.
Well, I'm getting a nice Asus Transformer for christmas.
Well, I'm getting a nice Asus Transformer for christmas.
There will probably be a line of ICS tablets by christmas.
If I can find another which a keyboard dock like the Transformer for around £400, I will go for it, but the Transformer looks damn nice to me. Besides, XDA will port ICS, I'm sure.
Look what I just did:

Android's already awesome. Two Androids is even more awesome!

I think Asus is great at updates too.

I wasn't referring to whether or not you would get ICS. I was referring to a new line of tablets designed FOR ICS. Ones with OMAP4 processors and high res displays.
Any new batteries for the SGS2? The battery life is horrid.
\
Step 1: Get CurrentWidget, charge your phone until the indicated charge is 0 mA, keep the phone plugged in, wipe the battery stats using Battery Calibration from the market, reboot. Or delete the battery stats via ES File Explorer.
Step 2: Monitor idle battery drain. If it goes over 10 mA, you have a partial wake problem and you need to download a battery history/stats application that will let you see partial wake stats on applications.
Step 3: Take appropriate steps to fix partial wakelock.
Step 4: If partial wakelock isn't the problem, backup user apps using Titanium backup and wipe /system, /boot, /cache, and /data. Format in ext4, and from there put the phone in download mode and flash the latest rooted version of a stock Samsung ROM and it's paired modem, then restore all user applications via market, then restore the application data from Titanium backup. Recalibrate the battery and hope for the best. If you have an IM application that uses pull instead of C2DM push, delete it and get eBuddy or Trillian instead.
That's pretty much the best way to ensure good battery life. If you have decent idle battery life but you need better battery drain when using the phone, turn the brightness as low as you can, underclock the phone to around 1 GHz, 800 MHz if you can take a lower frequency, and turn off always-on mobile data/background sync.

I'm pretty sure you don't even get a cheaper rate for buying unsubsidized plans, the only thing you gain is the ability to change carriers on a whim, and in the US the big carriers all use different frequencies/bands.

Don't install KIES, but try to find a naked USB driver for your phone. If the KIES installer installs some things before actually installing KIES, then just let those install, then stop the installer when it's about to start installing KIES. I'm pretty sure USB drivers are necessary for Odin and ADB to work.
Unless I'm wrong, in which case that's kind of weird.
[editline]23rd September 2011[/editline]
Also, I'm kind of sure that the AT&T GSII will be able to use the Samsung GSII extended battery kit with no issues, no?
[editline]23rd September 2011[/editline]
In other news, Microsoft has a pretty brilliant patent for slider phones, where you can swap out a slider keyboard for a gamepad ala Xperia Play, or just have an extended battery if you don't want any of those.
