Are there any options better than Verizon?
Uh yah any option is better than verizon. No non Verizon ESNs and a horrible device selection.
You could get a used Galaxy S phone for AT&T or Sprint or T-Mobile. Or a used HTC G2 for T-Mobile. Or a used HTC Desire for AT&T. I've seen used Galaxy S line products go for $150-$200 and used HTC phones like the G2/Desire go for around $150 used.
These are Canadian prices though and it probably differs in the US.
Dig in guys.

Upgraded to Verizon from AT&T (which sucked balls in my area like no tomorrow and I've had it since the iphone 3G was new), and got myself the Bionic. (I've been using my uncle's old Google Nexus with my old iphone3g's simcard for over a year now, so I'm not new to android)
anyone here got some good info on it, or should I start writing stuff down and keep you guys up to date on stuff?

What's your opinion on the screen?
What's your opinion on the screen?
big and bright, really crisp watching video, but one thing that urks me is that the medium gray from the default background flickers a little bit when you move back and forth on the homescreen. That, and that wallpaper makes it easy to see that there's a contrast difference depending on viewing angle. straight-on, it's got a pretty solid darkness, but from either side it lightens up the dark areas a bit. Kind of annoying when your face is up close, since each eye is getting a different dark-to-light gradient. Kind of that "looking at a 3D movie too long" twinge in your eyes where they're seeing different images in the same space.
don't notice it unless there's something like that background, though. I should probably just change that :v:

Yah the contrast difference from different angles is really just a flaw in LCD screens in general.
I actually asked because it uses an RGBW subpixel layout and there are people out there(who are full of shit) who claim it makes text fuzzy and unreadable, and I'm just collecting opinions of people as evidence against those claims.

Hah, i can tead everything on fp just fine without even having to zoom in, even the section descriptions on the front page are legible, and that stuff is tiny.
Uh oh, it doesnt autocorrect spelling and common punctuation like my nexus did. [del]Is there an option for that?[/del] found the option. sweet

Well I'm glad you're enjoying the phone. It beats pretty much every dual core phone out there except for the i9100. Moto made a good decision and opted to use the OMAP4430 instead of Nvidia's Tegra 2 they used in their other devices. And Engadget said the Bionic and X2 had the best qHD screens they'd ever seen on phones.
[editline]28th September 2011[/editline]
Speaking of the OMAP4 chip in your phone it looks to use an SGX 540 GPU. The 540 used in the original Galaxy S is second only to the Mali-400 in the SGS II(excluding apple A5 which has not been used in a phone yet), and Texas instruments bumped the clock speed from the original SGX 540 up 100MHz. So it's essentially 50% faster than the SGS version and this makes it the second fastest GPU used in a mobile phone.

It may not make a huge difference, but it is easily noticeable and coming from using RGB panels all the time it is glaringly obvious and annoying.
In other news, Hitachi has made an amorphous silicon (I have no idea what this means) IPS display in a 4.5 inch formfactor with a res of 720p.
It may not make a huge difference, but it is easily noticeable and coming from using RGB panels all the time it is glaringly obvious and annoying.
Unless you purposely look for issues it actually isn't a noticeable different EXCEPT on the edges of white objects and white objects only. In fact when the screen is around a foot away from your face the pixels become resolved and the issue isn't noticeable at all. If it's an issue then why did engadget call the RGB SLCD on the Sensation bad and claimed the RGBW one on the Moto phones were the best they had ever seen?
Here is an image of text rendered on RGB and on RGBW respectively. It then beside it shows how this would render at a distance.

Here is the Android Calander icon rendered on the left by an AMOLED based HTC desire on the left and an SLCD one on the right.

Even at a very high magnification text is still perfectly legible and the minimal blurring around the edges is reduced when normally viewing.
In fact text rendered using an RGBW display is just as legible as text rendered with a conventional RGB display. With an RGBG display you may get a slight green hue on the very edge of certain letters, this is unrelated to sharpness or graininess.

RGBW based displays also use 40% less power while actually being brighter than conventional RGB displays. Regarding sharpness. Sharpness is measured and perceived as modulation ratio. When you write a black and white line pair can you still see the difference between the white and the black and you must be able to measure 50% contrast modulation or more. PenTile displays have no difficulty meeting and exceeding 50% contrast modulation ratio to the full resolution of the panel and in any direction.
Hm, someone is selling an Infuse 4g on craigslist for $300, and I just got paid today. It seems pretty solid, and I've been itching to move away from WP7

Good phone, but not really all that much of a dev community compared to Galaxy S and S2, and their original carrier variants. Something to be aware of.

I'll keep that in mind. I'm looking at the Galaxy S, and they're not that expensive, and they have almost the same specs as my LG Quantum, but with a larger screen.
And I won't feel so bad about spending a lot of money on a phone that I don't technically need, since it's only $180 used from ebay, in pretty good condition.
I just found out that with Citrix Receiver for Android and Firefox, I can download the .ica, it'll auto load the receiver, and I can use my school apps on my phone. Neat-o.
And while not a phone, what do people think of the Barnes and Nobles Nook Color for an Anroid Tablet? The new Kindle Fire doesn't interest me since it doesn't have Bluetooth, which really is a big turn off for me.

It has a very active community.

That sounds like a great deal, the Galaxy S is still a pretty good phone
I would advise getting the Galaxy S over the Infuse UNLESS it's the captivate. Only get the i9000 international one.

I'm not saying it's illegible but the difference is noticeable even during normal use. I'd take the Super AMOLED+ screen on my SGS2 over a more power efficient/brighter screen that uses a pentile arrangement any day.
I'm thinking about giving back a rooted Desire HD on warranty. Now I don't have the original rom nowhere. So what should I do before handing it in?

download the official firmware somewhere, and flash it?
I really wish money would go into making phone batteries more advanced, soon people will be running out every hour or so
But we hit a brick wall with battery technology, so I can dream :saddowns:
Yeah, I get 10 hours on my phone, which sucks :(
Anyone had a go with the Orange Monte Carlo? I need a new phone and it looks good
Some shitty attempt of a ice cream sandwich

http://gizmodo.com/5845028/supposed-leaked-video-of-ice-cream-sandwich-emerges
Seems pretty believable to me.
Although with some coding skills this could be easily faked.

Well, there are some conflicting things in this video:
0:07: The lockscreen looks pretty real, and really awesome.
0:20: Camera looks like a simple reskin, although that video/photo button is interesting. Also, the font seems to be different. Why?
0:53: Rotation animation? Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think Android 2.3 has those.
0:56: Well, the whole launcher thing is easy to fake.
1:10: New notifications bar looks lame, I don't think it fits well. I think it's pretty easy to fake this one, just by replacing the background.
1:25: Honeycomb app bar looks nice. Don't know how to fake this one, although you can easily replace the long home button press function.
This could be real ICS, but a very early build.
[editline]29th September 2011[/editline]
Here's an older leak (August 11), it could be by the same person, considering that they're both on Nexus S and T-Mobile:

While the launcher matches, the notifications bar looks different, although the bottom part is the same.
[editline]29th September 2011[/editline]
I'd say that both the video and screenshots are the real ICS, just a very outdated build.
I'm p. sure that I'm going to buy a Nexus S - smart idea? I was supposed to order one a couple of days ago but my boss messed up payment so the real $$$ doesn't flow in until October 22nd
I'm new to the Android business, only smartphone i ever had was an iPhone 2G. Are there things I should (definitely) look out for?)

Uh I just presented tons of evidence that RGBW screens render text just as well as RGB ones, and your counter argument is just saying "the difference is noticeable" and not presenting any evidence.
Even if it were a good counter argument I would like to know which RGBW based device you have beside your SGS II to compare the screens.

Nexus S is a very solid device, but I'd wait for October, because Ice Cream Sandwich, Nexus Prime and a billion of other devices should come soon.
