Hello Android Development Community
We appreciate all the interest and passion surrounding the NVIDIA Tegra Platform and we take our support for the development community seriously. NVIDIA has been working with Google and Motorola to provide the open source community with the required drivers and other binary code to build full Android OS images for the Tegra 2 powered "Motorola Xoom". We expect Google to make those components available as part of the Android Open Source Project soon.
In addition, NVIDIA is working on a full release of Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS) for our Tegra 2 Dual Core and Tegra 3 Quad Core reference devices to be made available early next year. This release package will comprise of binary code, drivers developed on our reference platforms and any patches necessary to ensure stability & performance with ICS. We hope the open source community can leverage this release for their work on all Tegra devices.

Interesting news.
Now if only Samsung did the same for the Galaxy S2 drivers so the AOSP ICS port could be finished.

Apple is a master troll:
Redacted public versions of the legal briefs tied to Apple's July request for a ban on Samsung's products began to trickle in over the last few days. While we eagerly await the judge's decision on an injunction, let's take a look at some of the more interesting tidbits in those briefs. It should be no surprise that Apple and Samsung have spilled a lot of ink defining what Apple's US design patents on the iPhone and iPad cover. What might surprise you, however, is that a fair amount of the analysis over what the patents don't cover — essentially work-arounds to the patents — has come from Apple. In litigation, a patent owner has to specifically define, and thus somewhat limit, what its design patent covers, and often has to use those definitions to rebut arguments from the alleged infringer.
One of Samsung's arguments in its defense against the injunction is that Apple is trying to improperly cover various functional (utilitarian) elements required in any modern smartphone or tablet device. Samsung is essentially saying that it had no other realistic design options available when it created devices like the Galaxy S, Infuse and Galaxy Tab 10.1. Apple obviously disagrees: it argues that Samsung had many other non-infringing design alternatives at its disposal and didn't need to copy the aesthetic features of the iPhone and iPad devices. To make that argument stick Apple had no choice but to identify exactly what those alternatives were.
On the smartphone side of things, the following is a list of some of the alternative design options Apple felt Samsung should have looked into further:
Front surface that isn't black.
Overall shape that isn't rectangular, or doesn't have rounded corners.
Display screens that aren't centered on the front face and have substantial lateral borders.
Non-horizontal speaker slots.
Front surfaces with substantial adornment.
No front bezel at all.
As for tablets, Apple identified a similar list of alternative designs available to Samsung:
Overall shape that isn't rectangular, or doesn't have rounded corners.
Thick frames rather than a thin rim around the front surface.
Front surface that isn't entirely flat.
Profiles that aren't thin.
Cluttered appearance.
This isn't an exhaustive list of the alternative designs offered up by Apple, but it's a summary of the most interesting ones. And if they're interesting to us, imagine what Samsung was thinking when it received this list a few months back. While a single feature change might not be enough to escape Apple's scrutiny, it's clear Samsung was gifted at least some options to work with — excluding perhaps Apple's suggestion that Samsung could have adopted a "cluttered appearance" for its devices.
Sure enough, Samsung came out with the Galaxy Tab 10.1N in Germany a couple of weeks ago, and expressly stated its new tablet design was modified "to reflect Apple's claims." The new look includes thicker vertical frame sections (in landscape orientation) that wrap around to slightly intrude on the front face, and a vertical speaker slot placed in each of those new frame sections. Unfortunately for Samsung, Apple apparently doesn't think those changes were enough — asking a German court to ban the new 10.1N version based on a European design registration that's a counterpart to the US design patent. It will be interesting to see exactly where the courts draw the line on what defines an acceptable work-around for these particular design rights. We may know soon enough.
Well, obviously Apple wants Samsung to make ugly shit.
Not rectangular? That would be hideous.
Also Samsung is not allowed to create thin tablets.
SGSII or Galaxy Nexus?
Galaxy Nexus has a 720p screen and good old vanilla android (ICS) but the SGSII has a non-pentile screen apparently as well as a microSD slot, the same processor, a better camera, a lot of existing third party mods and also looks better. It's also almost £200 less expensive. If a vanilla ICS ROM is released for the GSII then that seals the deal for me, the galaxy nexus is not worth the extra money for the screen considering it skimps on practical features.

pentile at 320 ppi is no difference than non-pentile, unless you keep the fucking screen 1 inch away from your face

Yeah it doesn't really bother me, it's more the other factors.

Oh I wish there were more cluttered fat hexagonal tablets. I thought Android stood for choice!
So apparently the samsung galaxy s2 doesn't support updating through kies, or mine is just retarded.

No, it's just your's being retarded.
I don't think there is an official update out for the SGS2 past 2.3.4
I don't think there is an official update out for the SGS2 past 2.3.4
Mine is on 2.3.4 but it actually says the phone doesn't support updating through kies.
I also can't get baconreader because it says it's not compatible.
God damn it, the promotion is not for xperia users yet, omg...
It will come it later...
Will in still get it after making an account?
Would a kindle fire be a good gift for a mom? My mom watches a lot of hulu and she's also disabled so I think the Kindle would make books more accessible to her.
Just tested my touchpad on the AnTuTu Benchmark, and I got 6269 (compared to about 5800 on SGSII) So I'm really happy with this 150 dollar tablet haha

Kindle fire is decent, assuming she won't do anything else but watch movies, tv shows, read books and the news. And it's pretty inexpensive too.
Get it, like on Christmas of course.
Bought my galaxy S 2 two days ago, got a nice rom, rooted it yesterday, broke the screen today.
any options?
how the fuck hahah

Sounds like exactly what she'd do.

oh wow, how'd you manage that
was it intentionally and do you have warranty?
Bought my galaxy S 2 two days ago, got a nice rom, rooted it yesterday, broke the screen today.

You broke it already?
Oh my god, I'm cracking up right now! :v:
you better have insurance on that
can someone define all these terms? What the hell is rooting and flashing?
can someone define all these terms? What the hell is rooting and flashing?
obtaining root (super user), and "flashing" the ROM (read-only memory, what stores the OS) is changing what's on there
correct me if i'm wrong
can someone define all these terms? What the hell is rooting and flashing?
Rooting, gaining root access or having full control over the device at the lowest level.
Flashing, installing software into the systems memory (often ROMs or radios)

Baconreader isn't very good atm anyway, crashes all the time.

Not sure, but i'm pretty sure you have to register in-app to get it.
Though it should be for xperia users, since it's an ericsson phone. It was actually originally for those and only recently discovered LG phones could do it too.
edit: the promo goes til april next year so you do have time.
