I know, it really seems like a software thing but I can't find shit to do with it. It's not on silent or anything like that and I've looked in basically all the options. Factory reset it and the problem still remains. Seems like an oddly specific issue and the only results on google even close to my problem are the ones saying you should return the phone and get the headphone jack replaced. I don't doubt that getting the phone replaced would fix the problem but this does seem like something in the software (it does actually recognise when headphones are plugged in and removed and all the hardware seems to work fine); the speaker works really well when you explicitly tell the phone to use it, e.g with the FM radio, and when the phone detects headphones the mic immediately starts working.

I might try flashing an older firmware onto it which should completely wipe out any software bollocks, but I've very little idea where to start and I've no idea if it'll yellow triangle my phone (I don't think flashing official samsung firmwares on the device raises the custom rom install count does it?). Might look into it today though and if it doesn't work I'll send it off tomorrow.

What format is it in?

Is it downloaded music from say Amazon or iTunes or ripped from a CD? Your music player on your computer should automatically tag it all properly.

I think there is an app on the market to auto-tag your music.

ok tonight I'm gonna try and reflash my S2 which should completely wipe any software issues that might persist though a factory reset (I think)

a few questions:
Where would I find a download for the official firmware of an unlocked UK S2 running 2.3.4? (I know kies allows you to download firmware but it's only updating not reflashing and kies is a piece of shit anyway)
How do I install it?
Will flashing this official ROM increase my custom install count and yellow triangle my phone?

I think he is referring to the fact that the current official alpha build totally masks the ICS feel with TouchWiz, but as more and more people get the SGS II there might also be a bigger number of people that demands the stock ICS feel to it.

If you want to freeze the stock gallery and use one from the market you should be fine. Not sure what you mean by freezing your files though.
