Android Thread V4 - Got money? Samsung Galaxy S II. No money? ZTE Blade.
AMOLED+ isn't good enough, SAMOLED+ is getting there. Until it's an equal to IPS I see no reason to choose it. Colors are just oversaturated, and while you may think that's a good thing, I believe in color fidelity. S-LCD falls short and SAMOLED+ goes too far. Really, the S-IPS on the iPhone 4 wins here, nothing you can do. The viewing angles may be better on SAMOLED+, but when it's unlikely that you'll be canting the phone much more than 100 degrees from the vertical, I doubt that this is a big deal.
Wrong. Anyone who owns a P-IPS monitor knows the colors aren't oversaturated. You're simply used to poor color reproduction from TN panels and lower end IPS models like S-IPS.
Meanwhile my Inspire consistently has around 150mb of free ram while my brother's Captivate has about 70 to work with. Before you say anything about how the stock ROM sucks up RAM, my brother runs the custom Darky ROM with Launcher Pro.
Your brother has no idea what he's doing. Darkys rom has tons of crap that is unnecessary and is terrible for ram. It uses two ram scripts simultaniously that conflict with each other.
http://img810.imageshack.us/img810/8396/screenshot1312304456750.png
That's my used/unused ram on my i9000. Together that's my total usable ram.
And really it'd be okay, because a good S-IPS panel would really have more accurate colors. Oversaturated colors are not a good thing. There's also reports of burn-in with SAMOLED+, and OLED tech means that the blue subpixels will burn out faster. Samsung can go ahead and continue to improve it's technology, S-IPS is still the king of display technology. HTC's screens admittedly aren't amazing, but they are definitely not subpar. Before SAMOLED+ came out I would have never taken a Samsung phone, but they need to still keep improving it.
The GS2 may be an amazing phone, but there's still niggling flaws here and there that every Android seems to have. No big deal, but in general Samsung phones have flaws that I don't really want to put up with. Things like the inability to link contacts so I don't have duplicate names littered EVERYWHERE in my contact book, working GPS out of the box, etc. You may not think of Sense as a good idea, or unibody design, or any other number of things that HTC does to make their phones "different". I think it is. I think it's convenient to have a phone that has a built in phone finder that I can use with no fuss and long setup. I think it's nice to have a phone that actually feels like it's worth 550 dollars. I think that it's nice to have a phone that doesn't have niggling hardware flaws like an overheating screen or nonfunctional GPS. Maybe you don't have a problem with that, but I'd rather go with tried and true hardware with distinctive industrial design wrapped up with software that helps make the phone better and require less setup.
Just going through forums the general consensus is "I don't trust Samsung because of spotty QC and software updates."
Anyway, at the end of the day some people will pick Samsung for having something they can tinker with, others will pick HTC or Motorola or any other number of Android phone makes, and some will go to Apple because that's what they want. Everyone has their own personal opinions.
First of all the GPS on the SGS II has been tested and tried. It's been proven to be better than the Sensation. Just google it and look at the Engadget comparison.
Second of all you CAN link contacts on Samsung phones. All my contacts are linked with their separate facebook, google+, cell phones, gmail and hotmail accounts into one contact in the contact app. Third of all I already shot down your "oversaturated" colors complaint. Could you please explain to us how you KNOW the colors are oversaturated when you've only ever seen your brothers Captivate first hand and not the SGS II or Nexus S?
Fourth. The screen doesn't overheat. The phone is designed to be able to hit high temperatures and the Samsung manual that ships with EVERY samsung device states that it may fell hot to the touch but it is safe and will not affect the phone.
Fifth. The general concensus about Samsung updates is from stupid Americans such as yourself. Your carriers are holding back updates, not Samsung. Samsung devices were the first devices besides Nexus devices to get Android 2.3.3 AND android 2.3.4 updates.
At the end of the day your entire argument was flawed and you have no idea what you're talking about. Everyone may have person preference but that doesn't negate the fact that some hardware is superior to others and some user interfaces are more resource intensive that others.

WTF SE.
I've picked up the Dell streak 5, it's over the top. But the HTC HD7 and Samsung Infuse feel fine. I'll have to see how a phone with a screen size right in between them feels when you use it, and if it fits in my pockets or not.
Does Android Grass live wallpaper use 8 bit colors or something? It just hurts to look at when it's on the lockscreen.
[editline]2nd August 2011[/editline]
Now that I think about it, just about every single UI gradient looks like bullshit.
[editline]2nd August 2011[/editline]
Took a screenshot of one of the retarded gradients, opened it on my phone's browser, and it doesn't THAT much color banding. What's going on?
[editline]2nd August 2011[/editline]

There's still banding, but it looks A LOT worse on my phone. And barely noticeable in the browser.
[editline]2nd August 2011[/editline]
Enabled dithering in CM7 settings and it looks just the same..
What do?

What phone?
What phone?
It's an HD2, it has 262k colors (65k was a WM6.5 limit)
All those fancy gradients I found look just fine in the browser, banding only happens to the UI.
[editline]2nd August 2011[/editline]
Seems like this is a CM7 problem, this didn't happen on Sense ROMs neither on my HTC Desire and HD2
my gs2 bands in pretty much any app
my gs2 bands in pretty much any app
Never noticed any banding on it at the store. I however did notice banding in certain apps like doubletwist. But I notice banding in doubletwist on the Atrix, SGS, SGS II and the Sensation as well.

Oh. I see why you all are experiencing the banding. Every time I use a device I use chainfire 3D to unroll everything to 32bit color.
Oh my god, thank you SO much.
Oh my god, thank you SO much.
I can't guarantee it will work. Try it out though.
Well, some things do look better now.
Although everything still looks like crap on the lockscreen.
Well, some things do look better now.

I'm afraid some of the issues may be on a hardware level, specifically the screen quality.
Everything looks perfect in the browser, so I really have no idea why is this happening. Ah well.
why dont you just get another rom then ?
Because I like CM7 :v:
Also Sense GB is kinda glitchy on the HD2 right now.
which one are you using ? the banding may only be happening on the release you have.
I'm using HyperDroid-CM7-v2.1.0
[editline]2nd August 2011[/editline]
there's no official cm7 on the HD2, because it's not officially an android device, or something.
Earlier in this thread, I posted that I managed to get Overv's old Android app running. Since then, I've looked into getting an actual API key:
- Hexxeh says no new keys.
- Garry says no new keys.
So I went about about asking Overv if I could use his API key. That would be a no.
I wrote this post quite earlier, actually. Instead, the conversation progressed and resulted in Overv blocking me (edit: and removing me too) on steam for quoting himself. Because I'm not here to start fires, and I have yet to acquire an API Key, I'm not releasing anything until either Overv gives me the all clear to use his key, or Garry decides to hand out a key. I'm also pretty sure that as a result of my probing and reverse engineering, the one API key I have will probably get knocked offline as a result. So for that, I'm sorry.
And to everyone who wanted an android app, I'm sorry. Hexxeh and Garry aren't giving out keys, and Overv isn't going to take lightly if I do provide something using his key.
Let me make it clear that I do not endorse or support anyone using my old Facepunch app source code and/or API key. The API key can be disabled at any time, so be wise and do not make use of it.
As I've said earlier, work on the official Android app will resume after I've finished writing http://open.gl.

I don't want to derail this topic, but I'd like to point out that I was never going to do anything without your consent. I was actually hoping for a better outcome than this, but I suppose that won't be happening any time soon.
Has anyone got any invites to the Pool Party app by Google? (Apparently it's a new photo sharing app)

I can't believe no one's ever thought of that domain.
Wrong. Anyone who owns a P-IPS monitor knows the colors aren't oversaturated. You're simply used to poor color reproduction from TN panels and lower end IPS models like S-IPS.
But at the same time people talk about how whites aren't actually white with SAMOLED. Also see just further down about color saturation. Also, if you have any screen with more gamut than 100% of the colors that the computer will actually be displaying, either you're going to not be able to see them at all, or you get oversaturation. More gamut doesn't always mean better. And you go on and on about how P-IPS is better than S-IPS, when 30-bit color is pretty much unsupported in terms of actual colors, and from reading it seems that the only thing people do with actual 30-bit color is just use it for higher mathematical precision, which means that in everyday use you'll end up seeing about nothing in terms of difference.

Are there actual numbers in terms of GPS sensitivity/time to first fix for warm start and cold start? All I've found is a video of the GSII being able to lock on in Google Maps, no actual numbers in terms of accuracy/average satellite dBm, etc.

When the screen blows past 100% gamut, you will be experiencing very oversaturated colors. Visions adapts, and if you prefer that, that's okay, but I personally would rather have something 98% of the way there.
Fourth. The screen doesn't overheat. The phone is designed to be able to hit high temperatures and the Samsung manual that ships with EVERY samsung device states that it may fell hot to the touch but it is safe and will not affect the phone.
But at the same time heat is a huge cause of early death for electronics. The only time my phone gets hot is from charging. Unless somehow I have an app pushing the CPU to the limit, my phone never goes past 40 C in the weather I've been through, which is anywhere from 50 F-90 F (10C-32C), even if you don't think it matters, heat matters. If you choose to let your GPU go to 95C and not worry about it because ATI/Nvidia says that it's within normal operating temperatures, you're kidding yourself.

In which case that's pretty nice isn't it, as long as they actually do QC on it.
At the end of the day your entire argument was flawed and you have no idea what you're talking about. Everyone may have person preference but that doesn't negate the fact that some hardware is superior to others and some user interfaces are more resource intensive that others.
Sure, but it is a personal preference when it comes to whether the cost of that UI is really worth it. I'll take Sense because I don't want to download tons and tons of widgets to get my phone in a state that I would be okay with using on a day to day basis. If Sense is such a bad thing, why were there so many projects to port them to Galaxy S phones and why are so many widgets specifically designed to imitate it? HTC seems to actually be making an innovative UI that ultimately reduces the amount of tapping and stroking and guessing of what you need to do to actually do something. The user experience makes things more consistent and really, makes things faster in general.
Also in terms of hardware I don't think the battle is over yet, right now with rumored specs of smartphones like the Nexus Prime and the HTC Vigor/HTC Holiday, I'd say that things may prove to be a bit more interesting.
I just realised theres a little sticker on the camera of my SGS II, bet if I take it off it will be clearer.

Hunt3r I have to comment on how this link is completely wrong.
some observers note that the Super AMOLED display in use with the original Galaxy S, rings in 392x653 pixels of actual versus the 480x800 pixels of claimed perceived resolution.
Resolution is not measured by how many clusters of RGB subpixels there are. The resolution on the 800x480 RGBG screen is 800x480. The use of the RGBG subpixel matrix doesn't negate the actual resolution.
PenTile has the same number of pixels as a legacy stripe panel. It achieves this with one-third fewer subpixels, using subpixel rendering (SPR) technology, and adaptive filtering algorithms… but these panels still meet and exceed the rigorous requirements of the display industry for the definitions of resolution, measuring modulation contrast ratio of black and white lines through a moving aperture grille.
[editline]2nd August 2011[/editline]
Also. You're still incorrect about it being oversaturated. Of course the panels cover more than 100% of the gamut. But the gamut span and saturation is toned down from what the panel could actually achieve, the same way the AMOLED displays could be made brighter but is artificially limited.
[editline]2nd August 2011[/editline]
As for specs. The HTC holiday specs are just an EVO 3D with no 3D screen. And the EVO 3D lost the spec battle to the SGS II. The leaked Nexus Prime specs looks very interesting as they mention a SAMOLED Plus HD screen which falls in line with Samsung switching to a laser based production method that will allow for resolutions upwards of 300ppi.
Seriously don't worry about the heat on Samsung phones either. They have EMI shields that basically act as heatsinks, and my SGS with an overclocked cpu/gpu still runs perfectly.
I'm stupid. I have an LG Phoenix (LGP505). Decided to mess with it a bit more and managed to brick it by choosing the wrong device in CWM (Didn't notice at first) and then rebooting into recovery. Now it gets stuck at the LG screen. Only things I can do are go into Emergency mode, and if I press Home + Power I get
fastboot mode started
udc_start()
I found a solution I think, but I can't find my phones kdz.

Flash the right recovery using fastboot.
Resolution of PenTile: Don't give a fuck, this has been resolved with SAMOLED+, dead horse being beaten here.
Oversaturation: No, Samsung deliberately amps up the gamut to cause oversaturation. The average person will end up thinking that it just looks more vivid, I care more about color accuracy.
HTC Holiday will be a 4.5 inch qHD with 8 MP camera, 1 GB RAM, LTE, and a 1.2 GHz dual core Scorpion/Qualcomm. I don't know how you think that means "EVO 2D", because to me it sounds more like the combination of what was good about the EVO 3D with what is good about the Sensation. The HTC Vigor sounds like something even more impressive. The Nexus Prime sounds like it might have both SAMOLED+ HD and standard S-LCD forms, based upon rumors that Google is making multiple manufacturers make Nexus Primes for different carriers. Either way, the screens should be very nice, the internals will be a tossup though.
Heat is still a big deal man, phones shouldn't be getting hot. If the heatsinks are doing their jobs then it shouldn't be hot.

Yah it's a combo of the Sensation and Evo 3D. But the 1GB is the most performance impacting trait it has, and it comes from the EVO 3D.
That HTC vigor sounds cool but it's an MSM8660 @ 1.5GHz. It's still using Qualcomm's slow scorpion cores instead of their Krait ones.
Also, phones getting hot isn't a good thing, but it's not going to kill the phone. Have you ever used a DHD? The back is made of metal and it conducts heat like a bitch.
[editline]2nd August 2011[/editline]
Also. The SGS II has an app called background effect. It allows you to tweak things like saturation which means you could set it to cover whatever percent of the color gamut you wish. So there, your oversaturation argument has been killed and I don't want to see you bringing it back.
So what is the point of this debate?
So what is the point of this debate?
He thinks that a display that can have the saturation changed is always over saturated. Most likely due to the fact that he's never used a Galaxy S II. But I brought that point up in an earlier argument and he continued to insist that even though he had never seen the screen, that S-IPS screens were superior and had better color accuracy.

Ok, carry on. My 2 cents is that my SGS II looks a fuckton better than my HTC Magic.

This is a known issue and there are threads about it on XDA. No idea if anyone's found a solution though.
